Original version, 33 cl bottle. Pitch black color with brown head. Aroma has slightly tart dried fruits like figs and raisins and some cognac type notes. Taste is also slightly acidic, quite dry but fruity and complex. Blueberries, chocolate and some wood. Really smooth mouthfeel, soft carbonation. This beer really aged gracefully, complex, no alcohol burn, really smooth on the palate.

750 ml bottle, 2012 vintage, lot BDS0042012 with a best by date of 30/09/2018. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about a couple inch tan head that stuck around a long time. The bottle was a slow gusher when I opened it, good thing I had the glass ready to pour in! Aroma is nice, the brew smells like dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, roasted malt, oak, coffee, caramel and some tobacco. I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but with the addition of some molasses, tart dark fruit and a bit of vanilla. Mouthfeel/body is full, it's creamy with a good amount of carbonation. For a beer that's 13% ABV, the alcohol is well hidden. I thought this was a pretty good stout, I liked it a lot!

This 0.33l bottle was a gift to me from a good friend who I visited at his home in Holland on 02OCT15. Had a best-by date of MAR15 on the label. Enjoyed this back at home on 06OCT15.

Poured into a small tulip. It was jet black, opaque and oily, with a lovely head. The fine and creamy foam was a deep mocha, 1/4" to start and slowly receded, with decent lacing. Aroma was of mocha, coffee, choco, dark fruit and some woody action. Superb! It was velvety smooth on the tongue, with a chewy, medium-plus body.

Flavor was quite sweetish at the outset, with currants, raisins, dates and figs figuring strongly. Even had intimations of brown sugar and molasses, then some choco and coffee, though with minimal bitterness. Hopping was somewhat earthy and tobacco-like, and it was a touch boozy and warming. A rum-soaked chocolate cake in a glass, it was! This was one fantastic bier. Damn, I loved it so!! Thnx Thijs! Prosit!!

Dark brown color, almost black, with a big brown head. Overwhelming aroma with hints of coffee and chocolate. These aroma’s return in the taste, accompagnied by a mixture of vanilla and candy Sugar. The aging on rum barrels doesn’t go unnoticed and elevate the beer to a sublime taste experience. Superb beer!!

Picked this up at my favorite beer store in Belgium, Dranken Geers. 2011 vintage. Pitch black pour with an incredible 3 finger caramel-colored head with decent retention and lacing. The nose is big and bold, dominated by dark chocolate and roasty black coffee and espresso notes along with hints of vanilla, oak, and booze. The taste mirrors the nose with huge fresh roasted coffee, bitter dark chocolate, espresso, oak, vanilla, caramel, and boozey rum on the finish. The mouthfeel is thick and syrupy with little to no carbonation and a dry, bitter, and subtly sweet finish. Overall, another epic brew by Struise that is incredibly drinkable for a 13% ABV beer.

Thanks to angrybabboon for sharing the bottle.

Appearance: Black, straight black. Pours thick and syrupy with a heavy carbonation given the viscosity. Dark khaki/tan head starts off massive and creamy. Drops to a small cap and small creamy collar. Minimal lacing. Vigorous swirl produces a sizable head that dissipates quickly.

Smell: Deeply roasted, like crazy roasted. Loaded with cocoa and bitter baker's chocolate. So dark it crosses in to alkali. Slight oxidation as well. Coffee beans and bitter pressed coffee. Deep dark fruit, plum and fig and cherry. A sharp bite of alcohol layered throughout. Red wine and chocolate. Milk and dark, Tons of coffee bean. Licorice and a touch of leather. Touches of char and burnt malt. Deep caramelized sweetness. Some chocolate cake as well. Cherry skin, some oak, and vanilla. Dense and deep.

Taste: Deep dark fruit and crazy roasted malts. A touch of char and burnt malt. Caramelized malts add a ton of sweetness. Cocoa and lots of it. Deep dark baker's chocolate pushes in to an almost metallic level. Some plum and fig as well. Chocolate - milk and dark - and bitter. Coffee beans and old over-extracted coffee. Some vague notions of licorice and old leather. Oxidized and deeply metallic without tasting like a battery. Burnt and charred. Almost smoky. Warming pushes the alkali cocoa taste up a bit much and the coffee beans take on an older quality.

Mouthfeel: Not quite as thick as the pour would indicate. Medium pushing toward full body with minimal carbonation. Slick and almost creamy. Surprisingly clean.

Overall: We're not just a beer we're a coffee club.

It's big and burly as expected. A bit over roasted and loaded with a bitter cocoa and alkali profile that ultimately hurts.
