At the Holy Grale
Poured a rich amber. Nice laces from a frothy head. Smells dank and metal. Tastes excellent. Very full body from strong malts and grain. The barrel certainly comes through. Very smooth. This is an excellent quad. Very light for the abv.

As a very rich rendition of the style, Sint Amatus 12 has a lot of those magical qualities of Rochefort 10, but with a sturdy malty-toast character that adds to, and detracts from the elegance and refinement of the classic strong dark Belian ales.
St. Amatus 12 pours a rusty brown color with chesnut and purpleish low lights. A dense froathy, liquidy head blankets the beer and slowly reduces to a starry lace about the edges. Medium/dense haze further adds to the rustic appearance.
Winey vinous aroams hit first with a rise of fruity grapes, berries, and cherries. Nutty, buttery toast and chocolate malt notes round out the fruits and cidery character while a musty, woodsy note rounds out the scent.
Succulent flavors of sweet malts hit first with a blend of chocolate, walnuts, toffee, peanut britle and medium toast and cotton candy. Vinous notes of tart grapes, berries, plumbs, dates, and figs blend into the estery aspects of yeast and balance against dried woods of oak or sandalwood for a fruity/woody complex. Low in hops, the beer takes on mild earthy/woodsy/herbal tone from subtle hop additions.
A weighted creaminess sets the tone for a dense and full texture. Robust maltiness extends past the mid palate and deep into the finish, where the maltiness waivers and the alchols create dryness very very late. Semi-dry in finish, the beer has a warming mouthfeel and malty/fruity aftertaste.
Delicious and savory, this desert-like beer exhibits berries, chocolates, and wine character from start to finish. There's a few inconsistencies and intangibles that prevent it from world-class status.
Thanks Afictionado!

330 ml bottle, Etre Gourmet, 2013 Vintage - Pours clear ruby with a small tanned head which quickly dissipates. Medium carbonation. Aroma - Sweet candied sugar, fruits - red berries, woody alcohol notes, Taste - Sweet burnt sugar, fruit middle - raisins, marzipan, woody alcohol finish but not punishing. Very nice sweet forward quad.

Dark, hazy pour with almost no foam. Huge strawberry smell with faint traces of alcohol. Somewhat chick and creamy texture, tastes like strawberry and honey with a not-so-subtle alcohol finish.

Picked up a couple bottles of this for 4.60 E in December at De Struise shop in Bruges. Vintage 2011; lot 382923071102; BB Aug 29, 2016
Poured into a snifter, this brew looks like a quad, ruddy chocolate brown with a weak tan head, lots of yeast in the bottle. Colder, the aromas of candied raisins and ripe grapes come on strong with some hints of roasted malt too. Yeasty with hints of alcohol. When drinking I'll start with what I think knocks this one a notch below St. Benardus and Westy's quad. It lacks the complex esters and phenols present which help mask the hefty alcohol content. Now I still think this is a solid quad and if an American brewer made one this good, I'd be all over it. The malt bill is solid and the body is nice and heavy yet finishes dry and quickly although its a bit hot. The dark fruits are prominent and delicious. Maybe even too much as some anise comes through which I'd rather not have in a quad.

Enjoyed this on tap at Hopleaf in Chicago, IL in a 10oz tulip.
A - Deep mahogany, light brown pencil head dissipates quickly
S - Minor aged fruit, plum, hint of rum, carmel
T - initial: sweet toffee, grain, biscuity. Finish: more aged fruit, minor sugar alcohol.
M - Moderately frothy, medium body, thin, not impressive
O - Honestly i was very disappointed with this. Aged fruit was minor at best, medium body - one of the thinnest belgians I've ever tasted. Aged in Woodford Reserve barrels?? If this is true there is no recollection of this. none. And I was really looking forward to this. High point was the booze was hidden pretty well. Lastly, at $10 for a 10 oz pour - I do not recommend this to anyone. I felt robbed.

A - Deep dark brown an dred color. No carbonation visible. Nice beige head that quickly dissolves.
S - Nice pallet of smells, complex. Wine aroma, yeast, oak wood, sweetness and some booze.
T - Complex and brilliant, cream, bit sweet caramel, hops an vanilla. It gets better every time you take a gulp. Is there some coffee in there? A hint of spices like coriander and cardamom.
M - Sweet and creamy, very nice The carbonation is soft to medium. The finish is bitter and boozy.
O - Drink it without distraction and you will enjoy even better. To my opinion this is one of the best beers from the Struise Brewers. World-class!
