Pannepot on port! I was excited to see this on-tap at the Struise shop in Brugges.

Appearance: Pours a reddish brown with a finger of tan head that fades to a thick ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Sweet brown sugar, dark fruit, molasses, port, caramel.

Taste: Like the smell, sweet dark fruit, port, caramel, with a bitter sweet finish

Medium to thick body, smooth carbonation, dry finish

Really lucky to try this, so smooth and the flavors mix beautifully. I would have again

Pannepot on Port? Why not?

A - Brown beer with a tan foam head that left lots of sugary stickyness on the sies of my cup.

S - Lots of port, very fruity smelling ethers with some nice sweet cherry. Good brown sugars. Great smelling beer all around.

T - Taste does not disappoint on this one. Truly a fantastic beer. Very sweet with that good candied quad taste, brown sugar, fruity yeast. Touch of vanilla and a little wood. Loved this beer.

M - Almost full bodied, lower carbonation.

O - Loved this beer, went back for a second pour. Might get overly sweet if you tried to drink a ton of it, but I'd welcome the chance to find out.

This beer has been a longtime want of mine. 750ml bottle into a tulip appears a very dark brown with thin khaki head that is quick to fade and boast minimal retention power due to its low carbonation.

The aroma is peimarily brown sugar raisons and caramel/molasses that comes off very similar to plain old pannepot that isnt barrel aged.

It tastes the same with molasses, caramel, raisons and brown sugary notes. A faint kiss of fruity alcohol and seemingly no barrel notes or oxidation despite a proclaimed 5 years of barrel aging.

This is medium in body and light in carbonation. Its ok but very much akin to plain jane pannepot which is a fraction of the price of this. Somewhat of a let down.

Little on the heavy side.

On-tap at Fermentoren in Copenhagen
Served in a mini snifter
Vintage: 2008

Enjoyed on 10 May 2012: A nice surprise en route to the Sour & Bitter Dinner in Copenhagen - thanks Pinball (on the "other" site) for guiding us here.

A: Dark chocolate brown. Half (mocha) fingernail head.

S: Smells of dark dried fruit, port, and hint of Belgian yeast. Touch of spice and oak with more port barrel. Very inviting!

T: Follows smell exactly - in the best way possible! A lot of sweetness on this one (I assume from the port barrel), but very rounded, smooth, and big. Similar to the other Pannepots, but the uniqueness of this is really fun and enjoyable.

M: Full bodied with smooth carbonation.

O: A really fun beer that is deep, complex, and tasty! This could convert a vino to craft beer side for sure.

2008 Pannepot aged for three years on port barrels. Served in a plastic cup at the FFF 15th Anniversary party.

A - A finger of tan foam that features good retention and leaves plenty of lacework behind, eventually settling to a thin cap. Dark brown body. Looks like Pannepot alright.

S - Massive port in the nose - very sweet, with tons of berries and cherries present, and notes of red licorice as well. Candi sugar and treacle malt backdrop, fruity Struise yeast, with some of the nebulous spice blend at the periphery. Imagine Pannepot with port and faint oak and you're pretty much there.

T - The taste isn't quite as impressive as the aroma - the flavor collection is largely the same, but the sweetness approaches cloying after half a glass. Some additional oak character would offset some of the intense port influence, but who knows how many times these barrels were used before they reached Struise. Plenty of red licorice, candi sugar, light vanilla, and plenty of fruity port notes. Finish is mostly anise

M - Creamy, medium-full body, with lower carbonation and a touch of warming alcohol present. Slightly chewy, but otherwise clean finish.

D - A nice twist on Pannepot, and one of my favorites. Best enjoyed is smaller quantities (like port), but nonetheless successfully marries the two flavor worlds. I'd like for them to bottle this and sell it through the webshop, as it deserves more than a plastic cup and frantic festival atmosphere.
