I picked up a bottle of Atwater's Purple Gang Pilsner for $1.69 at The Lager Mill. It's another unusually warm day in Michigan and a Pilsener sounds good, lets see how it goes. Bottled in Feb. 2012. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a Pilsener glass.

A- The label is the normal plain one they use for their beers with a purple tint. It poured a slightly hazy pale golden yellow color with two and a half fingers worth of white head that died down to a thin layer that stayed till the end and left a little lacing. This beer looks OK.

S- The aroma is dominated by tons of bready pale malts that have a medium amount of sweetness and imparts lot of white and brown bread grainy aromas. Next comes a pretty noticeable sweet fruity aroma that is similar to a fruit jam. At the end I get a light amount of floral and earthy hops. The aroma isn't true to style, the jam aromas seems to replace the hop aromas that you normally get with the style.

T- The taste is somewhat similar to the aroma. It starts out with sweet malts up front that imparts lots of grainy and bready flavors. Next is a real slight fruit flavor followed by a really light amount of earthy hops. Instead of having a bitter finish the sweetness seems to overpower what little bitterness that showed up and it had a bready aftertaste. Not true to style and not interesting.

M- Smooth, sweet, creamy, on the light side of being medium bodied, and it had a medium amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel was ok, but Pilsners should be crisp not creamy.

Overall I thought this was a mediocre beer and a below average Pilsner, Almost every aspect of this beer was out of wack. It did have ok drinkability since it was smooth and mild, but it couldn't hold my attention and I wouldn't want another one. What I liked most about this beer was the look, it was the only thing that was Pilsner like about this beer. What I liked least about this beer was everything else, it missed the mark for the style. I wouldn't buy this beer again and I don't recommend it. I was unimpressed, it was a ways away from being a good Pilsner, too many flaws. I haven't had good luck with Atwater lately, there's been much more misses then hits, I am starting to loose hope in this brewery. A Purple Gang Pilsner from Hideout Brewing company was in BA's database, this bottle says nothing about that company.says it's an Atwater beer so that's how I'm reviewing it.

Appearance: pale gold and a slightly hazy with a huge white head that stays around. Good lacing on the glass

Aroma: typical very light pilsner bouquet. White bread.

Flavors: light grains, white bread, and mild hop bitterness. While it is a typical pilsner taste; it is a tasty typical pilsner. Should be nice on a summer day.

Mouthfeel: moderate-low carbonation, smooth, mild malts and hops
