Serving Type Sampled: On Draught at Golden City Brewery

Appearance: Medium straw in color, slight haze, dense white foamy head.

Smell: Spicy lager yeast, slight bite from the acid malt, citrus hops.

Taste: I taste a slight tartness upfront, like that of pils malt. Followed by an underlying sweetness that is perfect for the style. I taste a hint of black pepper, finishing with a nice saaz bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Moderate carbonation complimented the beer well. The beer also has a slightly dry edge.

Drinkability: Great! Pencil me in for the next round. I could drink this beer all day long.

Had on tap at Red Rocks Beer Garden.

On. Arrival a one finger bone white head was present that receded to a thin covering and ring around the glass that left decent lacing body is a slightly hazy pale golden straw, and carbonation is light.

Aroma is yeasty and crisp, but there is just a touch of sulfur leftover from fermentation. Otherwise this is a good yeasty crsckery kolsch.

Taste loses most of the sulfur are is crispy and malty woth a touch of pear esters as well as just a kiss of noble hops to round things out. Simple clean and mostly crisp with just a touch of bitterness.

Feel is full but crisp with a medium long finish. Carbonation feel isedium to high and makes this a nice and refreshing beer to drink while winding down or with a light meal or after some nice exertion. This is versatile and refreshing.

Overall, this has strengths in feel and look, but the fermentation character could be a bit more clean amd refined. For a pale German style beer however this passes the test.

L:. Pours a clear pale gold color with a small white head and no lacing on the glass.

S:. Toasted grain, a sweet apple, a light floral hop, with a light grassiness. Pretty light aroma.

T:. Toasted grain, a sweet apple, a slightly skunky hop and a bit of vegetable. Tastes quite similar to a slightly better Coors.

F:. Light and crisp body, very easy drinking.

O:. Reminiscent of a light lager, like the aroma and look but the taste leaves

Well, what do you know... there's indeed gold in them there hills. It's just that it comes is kolsch-style form. The mild mannered golden beer hybrid that tries its best to be a German lager but is made with ale techniques does a good job of giving the light lager crowd something of comfort while giving adventurous drinkers a dab of uniqueness.

Pale gold and set in a fine mesh haze, an arid froth builds on the beer like a loose lather. Its floral and cereal scent is richer with malt than expected with mild sulfurs and fruit esters adding complexity with the nose. Similarly, the cereal sweetness introduces to the tongue with fresh baking bread, light honey and wafer.

The malts gently lift from the middle palate and the floral flavors turn from honeysuckle to a pleasant parsley-like grassiness. Accompanied by esters of apple and lemon, the beer quickly develops a balancing bitterness of lemongrass and pepper with a quick hit of matchstick sulfur to crispen up the late palate.

Medium bodied, the beer retains more cereal character than is expected with kolsch, landing it somewhere between Dortmunder lager and cream ale. A slight eucalyptus warmth also cools the throat with modest alcohol for a refreshing but grain sweetened finish.

Poured into a glass stein. Has a very nice, classic beer look. Think head of just-off-white, with a hazy golden straw color. I guess some might compare it to urine, but to me, it's a pretty handsome beer. Slightly floral aroma, not much to glean, unfortunately. A bit of swirling lets loose some more floral aromas, almost perfumey, which I guess suits the Kölsch style. I've always found a Kölsch to be a bit musty smelling, but this one is not so bad, maybe a touch of it. Taste is similarly underwhelming in it's intensity. Flavors of grain, herbs, mild earthiness. Brings to mind rustic images; wooden barns, dusty horse blankets. Not exactly funky, but almost. Very earthen characteristics. It's a light Kölsch, the style characteristics don't overwhelm, but are definitely present. Mouthfeel is easygoing, light but with a bit of heft to the body, which is nice.

I was pleasantly satisfied with this one. Very easy-drinking, nothing too over-the-top as I think some examples of the style can be. Floral and herbal are the main features in this beer, with a touch of balancing maltiness. I like the Saaz hopping in this one, well done. Not bitter at all, just the right amount of flavor.
