An exceptional complex full body beer, with the taste of ripe plums and pleasant aftertaste. Sort of like a quad on a fruiter side.

Classic dark pour. Very sweet beer, both on the tongue & the nose. Dark phenols all over the place but there was some other intriguing notes - blackberry, mild roasted cacao, grape must. Lots of sweet but some nice savory notes to balance it, and has depth beyond the average quad / belgian dark

A - beautiful clear brownish red; small Hazel head of largeish bubbles
S & T - honey, caramel/dark brown candy sugar, raisins, dried plums/dried dark stone fruits, grape-y cognac
F - boozy, but smooth and velvety. easily drinkable

O - decent enough Belgian, but not sure what all the hype is about.. tastes a lot like the normal gouden Carolus with less candy/sweets and more booze... Preferred the christmas spiciness of the Noel myself

I don't particularly recommend this one.

Bottled 4/7/2016. Pours very dark brown with a generous foamy tan head. Smells sweet, caramel & dark fruit. Taste: modest sweetness, caramel, toffe & fig. No bitterness, no sign of the 11%. Perfect amount of carbonation, feels very smooth. An excellent caramel covered fig newton.

Prominent chocolate flavor in a creamy texture with no off notes. Not very complex, but certainly delicious like a chocolate dessert.

I think this is my third attempt at reviewing this, so hopefully it doesn't get lost this time. 2015 vintage

Pours a nice tan fizzy bubbly almost 1 finger head that fades pretty quickly, a little lacing, nice long legs, very dark murky molasses brown color, very little light.

Nose is loaded with dark fruits, brandy soaked raisin, candied dates, fig paste, lots of candy, candi sugar, toffee, sweet candy malt, caramelized sugar, a little biscuity Special-B, a little soft booze, some more fruity ester bright tree fruit, a touch of a yeasty note, as well as minor oxidation cardboard.

Taste big sweet malt, lots of candy again, candi sugar, dark candi sugar, some syrup, sweet malt, a little biscuity, big toffee and caramelized sugars again, a bit of booze warmth and alcohol flavor, a touch of some phenolic booze, with big fruity esters, again very fruity like drinking prune juice, tons of raisin, brandy soaked raisins, candied dates, fig paste, the usual, a little pear note, a touch of yeast, and faint cardboard oxidation, sticky sweey syrupy finish, more sweet characters and fruit lingering, a touch of bitterness and a little fusel alcohol.

Mouth is heavy syrupy thick, sweet sticky, lots of popping carbonation, plenty of warming tingly booze.

Overall more sweet and syrupy than I remember, a big Belgian beer, all the expected characters, a bit of oxidation unfortunately, tons of fruit, booze, sweet candy, etc.

2007 Vintage - Expiry dated at 29th March 2017 - 750cl bottle served into a Gouden Carolus 0.33l Goblet.

Looks:
Pops and pours with a nice shell white half inch of head, supplemented by a steady stream of minute bubbles rising fast through the clear mid brown liquid. Still a lively beer for its years, the head clings to the glass when tipped, crackles nicely then dissipates. Looks great for its age.

Nose to Glass:
Pungent on first pour, smells of sherry, port, slightly musty.

Taste:
Sherry and port notes apparent in the taste, slightly different profiles as we proceed down the glass, vanilla, burnt figs, molasses, for an aftertaste burnt caramel just sits in the throat, very nice.

Feel:
Smooth mouthfeel, subtle bubbles tickle then meld with the tongue, the slightest tinge of alcohol sometimes apparent though not every swig.

Overall:
Very impressed, held up well for its age and surprisingly easy to drink for its Abv, up there with its strong Belgium peers, drinks like a quad though light in color by comparison. Had intended to defeat this monster in 2 sittings but it reeled me in and was polished off like a Pale Ale. Typically a high Abv sipper by all accounts however age may have mellowed this example, throw sipping to the wind and you will be rewarded.
