I love surprises, and this was a great one. I bought a Brasserie RJ sampler six pack the last time I was in Montreal. The Cheval Blanche Blanc was a decent weissbier, but the Ambree Speciale was pretty lousy, and I didn't expect the Rousse Speciale to be much different. Wrong I was -- it's not spectacular or anything, but it's a very pleasant, drinkable beer for the price, and I'd have no problem ordering it from a bar if it was available over many other Montreal-local brews.

On to the details...

Poured into a pint glass, a nice semi-cloudy gold with very slight hints of red. Not the colour I expected from something called 'rousse,' but OK all the same.

Scent was pleasant, if a bit weak. Floral and earthy tones, some grapefruity citrus, and a bit of biscuit or breadyness. Interestingly similar to some cheaper Belgian brews, even though it's an 'American Amber'.

Taste, again, was pleasant, and surprisingly so. It's a bit tart and sour, with some fairly obvious citrus and yeasty flavours, as well as just enough hops.

The mouthfeel was very interesting -- smooth to the point of almost being creamy. Very coating, and very little aftertaste. Again, quite a drinkable beer, and made me re-evaluate Brasserie RJ as a decent brewer after the disappointment of its sister beer, Ambree Speciale.

Bottle: Thin dissapating white head with very little retention and weak aroma of barley. Very subtle taste of spice. This won't break any record. Probably one of the weakest beer from Cheval Blanc and probably intented as an entry beer for macro drinkers.

A- Amber colour. Not really much red in it, not as dark as I remembered. Barely a rousse really. Little head. Just a little ring of bubbles around glass. Nice streams of bubbles in the beer though.

S- Yeast noticeable but dominated by fruity odours. Something that smells of straw.

T- Yeasty beer, wheat very present. Some spicy flavours. Overall a fairly well balanced beer on lees, but a bit ordinary. Alcohol flavour was noticeable.

MF- Nice and smooth.

D- Goes down nicely, but alcohol flavour combined with yeastiness cut down the number I would have in a row.

Pours a very cloudy brown/orange, off white head, some lace. Smell is spicy, orange and sweet malt, floral and citrus hops. Taste is orange peel, spices/coriander, some sweet bready malt and yeast. Mouthfeel is smooth, medium body and high carbonation, tasty beer.

Presentation: I found this standard 341ml brown bottle with a very plain black and red label looking very similar to its amber sister.

This is a good beer, but it is forgetteable too. Brewed on lees, it produces a cloudy appearance, but the taste is quite tart (like cranberries). The body is very average. I have trouble finding the red style aspect, because this beer is all about wheat (the smell, the flavour, the appearance.) Well, it is ok, but I won't drive 500 miles to get a 6 pack of that stuff.
