Brasseurs R.J. "Le Cheval Blanc Blanche"
@ Casse-Crepe Breton, Québec, QC on 2 Octobre 2014
$4.50 / bottle

Notes: I'm surely imagining that this is not as good as the beer that I used to drink at the brewpub, or which was imported in bottles to the United States so many years ago. (Ohhh, along with the Coup de Grisou those were some of my favorite beers of the time!). It's decent, I'll give it that. The appearance is right on, and you get the coriander in the aroma along with citrus, a slightly corny but still grainy maltiness (I'm not implying that corn is in use), and some floral and herbal character. The wheat and citrus peel and spice carries through into the flavor, and it's remarkably well-balanced, no issues there. Medium to medium-light in body with a median carbonation. Short, dry finish with some residual coriander spiciness and a light touch of orange. It certainly held its own against my crepe aux champignons et Suisse. An enjoyable and refreshing witbier.

Fresh out of fridge, poured into a weissbier vase:
L: Opaque goldenrod, virtually no lingering head.
S: Almost-too-sweet citrusy scent on the nose, with the wheatiness flying justy under the radar.
T: Welcoming wheaty taste, nothing too special as far as witbier goes.
F: Tends to linger in the mouth, but this isn't necessarily a negative.
O: I'd drink it again, on a hot-but-not-humid day while sitting outside on the porch. Otherwise, the citrusy nose doesn't fall into my usual preference.

Note: This beer becomes increasingly complex when allowed to warm a bit. The citrus is less insistent, and a slight spice flavor comes out to play.

Muted nose and taste--not a lot of spice; the citrus, coriander (etc.,) are here but in much restrained/reduced form--but what is here is a respectable little witbier (perhaps more old world in composition than new). Some orchard fruit flavours ans smells. Colour is hazy gold/orange, though it throws up surprisingly little head.

Can't compete with some of the stars of the style (what with Blanche de Chambly being made so near!), but it's refreshing, not too sweet, and not too heavy. Nice summer beer, if not a drink to write home about.

Lightly cloudy on the pour. Notes of citrus and wheat. The first sip is a flood of wheat, very light though on the palate, no after taste. Perfectly carbonated, little head retention.

Look: I had this on tap at a bar in Toronto called No One Writes to the Colonel. By the time, the server brought the beer to my table, the head had already receded to a crown and some lacings. Other than that, the beer is unfiltered and has a light gold body.

Smell: Style-wise, this beer is very traditional. No sweetness in the nose. One can sense the orange zests and lemon in the background.

Taste: The palate is outstanding. It tastes like a marmelade jam with some lemon juice drops. Expect the usual notes of spices at the back-end. Moreover, because the beer is very traditional, expect no notes of banana.

Feel: The notes of lemon juice gave this beer a mild crispness that doesn't overshadow the notes of spices. It also has a fresh feel.

Overall: The beer is by-the-book. That's what I like about it. Besides, it is a good companion in summer. However, it has a poor head retention.

Veiled straw color a good dose of activity. White 1.5 finger head, lasting for around 7 minutes, with average legs.

Zesty and floral aromas. Flavors of coriander, lemon, slight corn, sweet smoky grains, floral and herbal spices. Some syrupy sweetness and faint sharpness. Straw and woodsy feel.

Slick light to medium body with moderate carbonation. Faint and short finish, ending with a basic floral and coriander feel.

Overall an average craft having weak flavors and moderate freshness that is slightly flat. Feels a little adjunct and missing some personality.
