Captain Amylase Rum Porter is virtually opaque; if not for a sliver of earthy brown colour at its base the beer would be black as a hockey puck (which, I agree, is an odd reference to make when reviewing an Australian beer). I was sure its head would fizz out given the loud, hasty crackling it made off the pour but, to my surprise, it continues to go on strong, lace and all.

I was curious about what exactly makes this a "rum porter". I assumed it was put in rum barrels for a lengthy aging period. That, apparently, was giving these Aussies too much credit - they simply added dark rum directly into the bright tank. God love them. (In fairness, they also added molasses which, like rum, is a flavourful by-product of sugarcane.)

Regardless of methods, the outcome is much the same: a sweet, syrupy, spicy undertone. The aroma has a definite rum-and-cola quality that overshadows the presumably roasty, malty, bittersweet porter at its base. The bouquet showcases treacly sugar, baking spices (nutmeg, cinnamon) and offers a sizeable amount of macerated, dried dark fruits.

It all sounds like something for the hedonist crowd but the beer is actually quite subdued. It sounds impossible that something with flavours of brown sugar, chocolate, coffee, vanilla bean, clove and spice could be spiritless but, truth be told, Captain Amylase tastes kind of diluted and, all things considered, surprisingly conventional. I'm really underwhelmed.

Ageing in rum barrels would have imparted more depth and complexity but rum isn't the issue here; there's plenty of sweet, spicy, treacly flavour. Instead, the letdown comes with regards to the porter itself - it's not profound like an Imperial offering aught to be. A shame because a little more malty, roasty breadth and intensity would have done Captain Amylase well.

Pours completely black with a strong but small head.

Rum is prominent on the nose, with licorice and malt sweetness. Hints of chocolate.

Main notes are the malt, rum and licorice. Some dried fruits and chocolate in there too give a pleasant balance.

Full body on this one. Really sweet and warm in the mouth. The aftertaste is warm and chocolatey with a bit of spice. Not quite as boozy as I expected from the rum.

Goes down well but all the flavours are all rather toned down in this one. I see they added rum and molasses, with the result that this is a sweet and warm beer but the flavours are all a bit muddled and nothing really seems to shine through.
