500ml bottle poured into pint glass

L - slightly cloudy, auburn, pours frothy offwhite head, reasonably thick with good retention. A trace of relatively coarse sediment that stays at the base of the glass.

S - very strong herbal smells coming out of this one - almost smells like pot. Also getting orange, and moist topsoil. Faint toffee malts, but they are barely there.

T - quite fruity and nutty up front - oranges, figs- with a biscuity like malts. The toffee flavours and tinge of dark fruits take over towards the finish

M - medium carbonation (high for style), medium bodied, slick texture

F - interesting brown ale - the english standard is there with the toffee malts, but the fruity and herbal additions from the hops makes this a bit more interesting than the standard

10oz glass at the Lord Nelson itself.

Appearance is a lightish brown colour, though a little but murky to look at. Pours with a finger of off-white foam that stayed at half that level throughout.

Smell was bready, mixed with toffee and caramel. Not really any real hop aroma to talk about, nor any nuttiness in this regard. Not bad, but not to style.

Solidly nutty and malty, not a hoppy flavour, more UK style in this regard. Clean, consistent.

Mouthfeel is where the hops come in, adding good bite to the finish, more than cancelling out the smooth maltiness that is there earlier.

Overall it doesn't go totally to style. Still it is a sessionable beer that is enjoyable, solid and approachable.

Trying the 2IC at the brewery. It poured a deep mahogany with white head that is leaving a spotty lace. The scent is malty. The taste is nicely balanced with malt dominating the mid but finishes slightly bitter to clean the pallet. The Mouthfeel is medium in body with good carbonation. Overall it's a good beer and worth a try.
