600 mL bottle from the LCBO, included in Beau's' 2016 Oktoberfest mix pack. Bottled Sept 29 2016 and served barely chilled. #55 in their on-going Wild Oats series. I'll be grading this as more of a gruit or an herbed/spiced beer than an alt.

Pours a murky, translucent reddish-brown colour, with one inch of loose, soapy, light beige-coloured head floating upon the surface. It fades off slowly, requiring the better part of 10 minutes to reduce down to a denser, foamy half-cm cap and collar. Scant lacing, but otherwise it looks fine. Big notes of black tea and herbal sarsaparilla, with a distinctly fruity feel on the nose; cherries and red berries. Hints of caraway, caramel, tisane, clove, perfumey, flowery herbs and earthy roots, with a touch of muddled citrus.

Sweet-ish flavours of gingerbread, grain husks and caramelized sugar are but a mere backdrop for the wide array of herbal, spicy flavours featured in this odd medieval-style ale. Candied red apple, with tons of tea flavour - both black tea and herbal/tisane notes. Clove, citrus, pine needles, caraway and anise, finishing with earthy, herbal root flavours and floral notes that really assert themselves on the back end. Spicy, herbal, rather earthy aftertaste that persists with lingering herbal astringency. On the more substantial side of medium-bodied, with relatively low carbonation levels that result in a soft, smooth, wet mouthfeel. Not very refreshing, and certainly not sessionable, but still a fun beer to sip and contemplate.

Final Grade: 4.09, an A-. Return of the Mumme is quite possibly my favourite of all the Beau's "ancient herbed ales" and gruits. Like their other, similarly-themed products, dissecting RotM for the purposes of this review was an interesting exercise in palate development, and I'd encourage other BAs to give it a try. Quite well-made, and definitely an eyebrow-raiser. I'm glad I had the chance to try it this once, but I'm not sure it's something I really feel the need to drink repeatedly.

600 ml bottle served cold into a pint glass. Purchased as part of Beau's 2016 Oktoberfest pack. Worked out to $6.50 CDN for a bottle. Wild oats series #55. Batch 5469 and bottled August 19, 2016.

Appearance - dark amber coloured beer, fairly clear with some brown and red hues. A small finger of tan head rests on top and recedes moderately. Minimal lacing left behind, but the color is nice.

Smell - rather herbal like a spiced beer. Cinnamon and tea certainly make an appearance. Slightly spicy but rather sweet. Caramel and molasses with a hint of black licorice too. Not a traditional altbier, but intriguing nonetheless.

Taste - initially sweet and herbal, the black tea really shines here. Some light floral flavours to and just a bit of black licorice. Bitterness is a little more prevalent than you might expect based on the nose. Not quite as spicy as the nose suggests.

Mouthfeel - soft carbonation, but robust body. Slightly drying finish. No complaints.

Overall - one of the more interesting and well executed beers I've had in a while. Return of the Mumme is a well crafted and flavourful beer with fine tea and herb additions in addition to a well constructed altbier. This Oktoberfest pack is certainly off to a good start.

Attractive look, smell, and taste. I was incredibly surprised by this beer. The scent hints at a spicy brew, but the taste is much more relaxed with nice herbal undertones. Starts off sweet and ends with a satisfying bitterness.

A little unusual, but tasty. Reminds me vaguely of Sangria for some reason. Reddish brew, moderate head, no lace to speak of. Nose is malty, a little fruity. There's a big long list of ingredients to this beer, a lot of herbal stuff and others. You can pick it up in the nose and in the taste of the beer and part of what makes it so interesting is going slow and seeing what there is to find. Malt and then other things. Pretty soft, easy on the palate. Interesting. Fun. Well done.
