Style: Kölsch

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Golden-hued, crisp and finely balanced, Lug Tread is our tribute to the classic beer of Cologne, Germany. Lug Tread is top fermented (like an ale) and then cold aged (like a lager) for a lengthy period. This gives our beer some light ale notes complemented by a lager-like crispness. Lug Tread displays interwoven malt and hop flavours, subtle fruit flavours and a crisp, lingering finish.

Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a rich golden color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of bready malts, some floral notes. Taste is malt heavy, crackers, floral, just a touch of sweetness. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a very refreshing and solid beer.

First had Lug-Tread at Kelseys Original Roadhouse, Vaughan, Ontario, Canada, on draft into 23-oz. glass. Beau’s “tribute to . . . Kölsch” does deftly balance lager and ale notes, and lands on the aggressive end of the Kölsch scale.

L: A bright, chill-hazed deep gold. A white head forms, large-bubbled, and doesn't stick around. A bit of spotting sticks.
S: Fresh, floral with a little dankness along with fruity sweetness. A bit of white wine tannins come through.
T: Crackery malt, grass, and floral sweetness with a more prominent dry white wine-like flavor. Extremely fruity, mainly an apple / pear note, might make it too sweet if not for the grassiness and the dryness to balance.
F: Light but not watery and crisp, it leans dry on the palate even as it finishes sweet, the dryness coming in with the sweetness to even it out. Pretty smooth.

Pours a clear, gold body with a modest amount of frothy head forming at the top. A light aroma of malt, along with some neat, clean toffee pervades a light nose, with a rich body of a similar toffee-like malt, with light noble hop characteristics and some toastiness. Smooth and clean finish, what should be expected of a kolsch. I really like it!

The beer poured a translucent pale gold colour with a generous fluffy snow white head. The aroma was grainy malt and floral hops, pretty simple. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour was grainy malt, some woody flavours and a hoppy finish. Not a fan of the style, and this did nothing to change my fandom (or lack thereof).

This beer is unusual coming from a craft brewery in that it mimics plain, gold generics, but it's strength is that it does it well.

If you put it side by side with more interesting crafts you'll be disappointed, but if you stand it up with a Budweiser you've got a better beer. So it works when you're craving a plain beer.

I think of this beer as a faux craft. Big fancy bottle, big fancy price, but it just tastes like a macrolager with a little fuller taste & nothing adjunct or unpleasant like some of the Terribles (Coors Light etc.) I'm not looking for a beer that goes down clean & crisp & tastes like almost nothing except for carbonated bubbles.

Clear gold with a strong head & lacing. Solid bready nose. Excellent balance between crispness and softness for maximal drinkability.

I had this because at a food festival, out of the claimed "craft beer" selections (where Steam Whistle was advertised as craft beer, lol!), this was the only one I never had and the rest were rather crappy.
Well, it certainly is tolerable but it's nothing special. Nothing stands out here. Some wheat and maybe fruit, but it's kind of Heineken as well. Still, if there really is nothing else, I guess I will have it again.

july 20/17 batch in Ottawa itself so good and fresh.
Poured into a tulip glass (not that that matters)
Crisp and clear light gold.
Wheaty smell but weak.
Fresh, clean beer which is a great entry point if you have never tried a Beaus however much more exotic tastes await you with this brewer.
