600ml brown bottle with a bottled on date.

LOOK: Amber color, lots of lacing going around

SMELL: Juniper, mint, intense

TASTE: Smooth, mint all around, kiss of alcohol, mild hop bitterness, dried grass, rye bread, juniper, orange rind, dry yeast finish

Bock, soda, herbal-bock? It is a crazy combo. It is extreme beer. And it works. Simple, unique and tasty.

Appearance: hazy amber colour, and luxurious, almond head with great retention

Aroma: strongly of banana, like medicine you had as a kid; toffee; quite sweet; fresh bread; lightly of spice, maybe cardamom, cinnamon

Taste & Mouthfeel: not as intriguing as the aroma, more of the standard bread/grain of a lager but with a strong spice flavour that maintain's it's presence straight through to the finish; getting some apple/pear; spice is reminiscent of a pumpkin beer, it's kind of feeling like something you'd call a "spiced cider"; caramel and toffee malt flavours; pleasant, mellow carbonation, slightly more than medium body mouthfeel, soft and creamy
After reading the label, totally missed the peppermint and orange peel, but can see it in a subtle way now, as well as the rye malt (which was providing the distinctly different caramel/toffee notes); do like that these ingredients which make the beer unique are well integrated, attributing to a unified whole rather than trying to stand out on their own

Overall: a great tasting bock, although it feels better suited for Fall than Spring with the spice, very sessionable - just different enough to be interesting, but not so much that it would lose mass appeal. Made all the more impressive when the ingredients are taken into account, very well made

Bottle: Poured a light amber color ale with a rather large foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of spices is not overly dominant but still quite interesting with peppermint not easily discernable but juniper and orange peel easier to detect. Taste is an easy drinking mix of juniper bay, orange peel with light spicy rye malt notes. Body is about average with good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Enjoyable drink with just enough complexity; this one probably falls in the hit category for Beau’s.

Bottle #126 at The Only Café. Orangey, amber hue, slightly murky. Slow foam out of the bottle was worrisome - infection?

Peppermint and juniper in the nose, slightly spicy, sweet caramel, forest like.

Mint provides some real zip to this beer, wouldn’t have picked out the orange peel without knowing, but it’s there, tucked behind everything else, lending a slight zesty flavour. Earthy, spicy juniper balancing the mint - some of that spice from some rye as well.

Body is moderate, pretty basic to let the additions shine, hints of booze, pretty dry with light round sweetness in the middle. Could use a bit more caramel to round this out, maybe a hint of Munich to give it a bit more bock quality. Really zippy carbonation which I would personally dial down a notch or two.

Really unique experiment for a spiced ale, the mint and the juniper play off each other well. Pretty drinkable, yet warming. Body and carbonation could use some tweaks but, all in all – a neat experiment to try. Fantastically unique beer that they pull off well.

Appearance: It has a nice hazy dark orangy/amber color to it. It has a nice light beige head that dies down moderately and leaves some lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of peppermint, some rye, toasty/bready malts, light citrus and some juniper berries.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some peppermint, rye, bready malts, citrus and juniper berries.

Mouthfeel: It has a low/medium carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.

600 mL bottle from the LCBO; bottled Jan. 7 2014 and served slightly chilled. I passed on this one a few times because of the price tag, but I eventually buckled and gave into my ticker's itch.

Pours a clear copper-amber colour, topped with one finger of loose, ivory-white head that fizzles away over the next minute or two. In its place, a thin, foamy cap and collar remain. Very little lacing. Not the most impressive-looking bock, but I am instantly enamoured with the aroma, as the unusual adjunct ingredients make themselves clearly known. Evergreen notes from the juniper are easily recognizable, with the orange peel and peppermint remaining more subdued. Besides the spices, the overall aroma has a floral, fruity, almost cider-like nuance to it, with apples and even some raspberry notes coming through.

This is a yummy, unique little bock they've brewed up here. While the backbone of bready malts, caramel and spicy rye keep this beer's flavour fairly balanced, it is the adjuncts that grab your attention upon the first sip. Orange peel provides a pleasant twinge of citrusy sweetness, with hints of juniper and spruce soon piquing the interest of my palate. The peppermint shows up more toward the finish, which is relatively dry with a touch of earthy bitterness that does not linger. The mouthfeel is where I feel it necessary to complain - this is a decidedly thin-bodied bock, with bafflingly low carbonation. I can deal with the latter, as it gives this brew a smooth, pleasant mouthfeel and allows the special ingredients to shine without distraction - but more body would really improve this one for me. At least the alcohol is masterfully hidden.

Final Grade: 4.01, a reassuring A-. Hogan's Goat may just be one of Beau's top offerings, as it tastes great and shows considerably more creativity (at least IMO) than most of their flagship/rotating seasonal offerings. The ingredients list might give some BAs cause for concern, but have no fear - it all comes together in a surprisingly satisfying manner, making this bock a perfect cold weather warmer. That being said, the price point is slightly prohibitive... so while I certainly do like this beer, it's not something I think I'll return to until next year.

Beau's Wild Oats Series #15. Bottles limited to a release of about 1000, this one is #0970. Bock spiced with peppermint, orange peel and juniper berries. Served 35-40 in two servings in a 12 oz pilsener glass.

Pours a somewhat hazy and fiery honey-copper colour with a large off-white head that leaves very little lacing and a collared film behind.

Very nice, fresh and outdoors-y aroma. A minty, almost piney smell prevails over notes of fresh citrus, grasses, wood and berries.

Mint and pine also permeate the taste with a spicy bitterness, but there is a sweet and woody malt flavour that helps to balance things out, along with a juicy berry taste. Remains bitter through the finish.

Feels a bit thin in the mouthfeel with a moderate carbonation. Creamy, but with a spike of minty bitterness on the tongue. More pine and mint in the aftertaste. Very drinkable and little hint of ABV.

In a way, this beer is a one trick pony because of the pinene aroma and taste, but there's enough character around to keep it interesting. Would go best as an appetizer or with a salty or spicy meal. One of the better Beau's beers in my opinion and a great compliment to their regular winter seasonal.

600 ml Purchased from LCBO for $7.85 CDN. Looks like this is being brought back as it was bottled January 13, 2014.

Appearance - Clear copper hued beer with 1.5 fingers of ivory head that dissipates fairly quickly. Very little in the way of visible carbonation. Some sticky head sticks to the glass and leaves nice trail of lacing. Soapy wisps on top remain awhile.

Smell - Unique, it's not very beer smelling, but there are definitely a number of spices in the aroma, and interestingly enough there's hints of peppermint and rye grain. I'm not sure how I feel about that but it is pleasant.

Taste - Definitely some peppermint and then to the dry rye, with a touch of peppery heat. While flavorful, neither of these two unique flavors is overdone and this is very well executed. alcohol is perceptible, but not a hindrance in flavor rather it enhances the moderate spiciness. Faint orange citrus taste lingers in the background and melds perfectly with the peppermint.

Mouthfeel - Low carbonation as I find in many herb / spice beers, but has a complex full bodied mouthfeel nonetheless that is excellent.

Overall - Very unique beer (as far as ones I've tried) especially the peppermint, which stars in an understated manner. You realize its there and works well in this beer, but melds perfectly with the other flavors of the brew, notably the rye to make this quite and experience.

Poured a nice shiny brass colour. Thin off-white head. Leaves moderate lacing as drunk Light spiciness on the nose. Some roasted oats. Taste wise, this has some spice box, and hints of a lemon lime tingle at the beginning of the swallow. The spicy herbs don’t overwhelm the experience. Quite a nice Bock.
