That classic Hefeweizen character with an intense banana aroma, but with an added smokiness from malts that were home-smoked at the brewery with maple wood (Canadian maple at that!). Simply put, banana pancakes with bacon. Smokin' Banana Peels was designed by brewer Kevin James exclusively for our annual Oktoberfest in Vankleek Hill.

Bottle from the Ottawa LCBO - Part of the mixed 4 pack

Appearance - Hazy yellow colour with an average size white coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for only a few minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Bread, corn, smoke, bananas

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, corn and apples. There is also some bread, bananas, and some smoke.

Overall - I am not a big smoked beer fan, and at first scent I was worried how I was going to get through the bottle. It's not as smokey as it seems, and it gets better and it's actually pretty decent. I'm sure fans of smoked beers will like this one, or maybe not because it's too subtle.

600ml brown bottle.

Pale yellow golden color with a great clarity, great frothing with help form the wheat of course. Light bready nose with mild overtones of smoke and banana pith. Very crisp with a light & smooth mouthfeel. Faint banana taffy is over shadowed by the smokiness, modest hopping and some yeast come through. Peppery with a snappy maltiness. Finishes quite dry.

Love crisp wheat beers and pretty much anything that is smoked ... a winner here for sure.

Clear light lemon yellow colour. Some cloudiness at the bottom. Unlike other reviewers I go 1 inch white head of large bubbles. Lots of carbonation. Some lacing but no retention.

Aroma of wheat and yeast. Not meak at all. Bubblegum and bananas. As it warms the smokiness comes out.

The taste comes in 3 phases. Mild German hops for a second. Then bubblegum and bananas. Then smokey maple wood but not overpowering like a good single malt. A good smokin aftertaste in the very back of the mouth.

A light to medium feel with some carbonation tingle.

Enjoyable brew .. light but full of smokin flavour. Better than other smoked beers I have tried.

This is not to my taste at all. I like weiss beers, but not rauch/smoked beers.

Pours clear gold with a moderate head that settles to a thin film. Pedestrian.

Next to no scent, just a hint of smoke. Very thin and bland to drink until finishing with a light dose of smoke. Very weak kneed as a weiss. Chemical in character, not much fun at all.

Simply not much fun to drink.

Smokin' Banana Peels is not a conventional Hefeweizen but there's a few features that should distinguish every example of the style, conventional or not, including: impaired clarity and a mound of moussy head. This one has neither. It's pallid, straw-coloured, and barely fuzzy, with not eveh an outline of foam. Looks pretty weak.

Hefeweizen is a notoriously aromatic style and smoked malt, like most smoked anything, tends to be pretty conspicuous, but this bouquet isn't giving me much to work with. The banana-like esters and peppery phenols of the style's trademark yeast are present, but restrained. The smoke is not yet appreciable although maple wood (used to smoke the malt) is conceivable.

On the palate, however, the flavour of smoked meat and bacon are unmistakable; it's like a smoke-house was set up in my mouth, and someone lit a bonfire not far away. Move over frozen bananas - smoked bananas is where it's at! My taste buds also pick up on a fusel, lightly iodine-y 'burnt tire' note that is more redolent of an Islay scotch than a Rauchbier. I like it.

I do wish, however, that it had a mouthfeel to match. Hefeweizens should be full of protein and hence feel substantial and nourishing - this one has a feeble frame and frail aftertaste, both the malt and the smoke succumb to the spritzy bubbles and disappear instantly. The use of maple wood has definitely made for a more delicate, "cleaner" smoke character.

Though the idea may have been a "Canadian breakfast" (maple, banana pancakes and bacon), the best market for Smokin' Banana Peels would be Germany, where Hefeweizens often have a place at the breakfast table. The added smoked element should make this an innate pairing for Brötchen (fresh rolls), weich Ei (soft-boiled eggs) and any and every kind of delicious Wurst...

Anyone else hungry all of a sudden?

Bottle: Poured a dirty yellow color ale with a large off-white foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of solid wheat malt with some cloves notes and light smoked notes. Taste is quite refreshing with solid wheat malt backbone with some nice cloves notes but the smoked portion of the beer is more subtle then I would have anticipated. Body is about average with good carbonation. Solid job of exploiting all the subtlety of the wheat malt backbone but smoked notes are a bit too subtle for my taste.

Appearance: It has a nice pale hazy straw yellow color to it. It has a nice white head that dies down somewhat fast and leaves little lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of bready yeast, banana, cloves and some peppery spices.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some breadiness upfront, banana, cloves, pepper and faint wheat.

Mouthfeel: It has a high carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.
