On tap at Bar Volo. Surprisingly complex pale Belgian. Funky farmhouse nice smooth sweet bitter onion grassy hoppy spicy honey yeasty -bold and comes through even after stronger big beers up first. Sauvin hop may be there but not featured. Decent for he style.

Pours somewhere between straw and amber. Pillowy white head filled the top of my Duvel tulip glass. Thick bubbly foam sticks to the sides of the glass all the way down. Spot on appearance-wise.

Great aroma. An interesting focus on tropical fruit, with almost a wit-like orange and bubblegum character.

Peppery yeast right up front makes it pretty clear what style we're going for. Malt is actually kind of difficult to nail down given everything else that's going on. Pale fruit, maybe pear, floating around. I find the Nelson Sauvin really stands out, with a clear winey character mid-palate. Finish is continental bitterness.

A nice Belgian Pale with a welcome something something that you might not have seen elsewhere.

Bottle: Poured a clear golden color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and light lacing. Aroma of residual sugar ad light cereal notes is OK. Taste is a mix of quite a bit of residuals sugar notes with some cereal and light fruity ester. Body is about average with good carbonation. The NZ hops notes are quite a bit subtle and don’t’ play a huge role as I would have expected.

Bottle shared by Steve, 600ml into a tulip. Wild Oats Series #25.

Darker hazy orange, white head with good retention and a bit of lace. Nose is yeasty, some banana, mild spice and some bright orange citrus. Taste has some bitter citrus character, a spicy yeasty bite and some white pepper. Lighter medium body and good carbonation. Tasty, and having this back in warmer weather would've been great.

Appearance: It has a nice cloudy golden/orange color to it. It has a nice off-white head that dies down slowly and leaves some lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of Belgian yeast, spices, citrus, banana and a light grassiness.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a bready yeast, peppery spices, some citrus and banana and a grassy bitterness.

Mouthfeel: It has a medium carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas. Very refreshing! Another great beer from Beau's.

600 mL bottle from the LCBO; bottled Feb 11 2016 and served barely chilled.

Pours a hazy golden colour, capped off by a generous proportion of foamy white head. It starts off about two fingers high, and requires the passage of more than 5 minutes to recede into a dense, creamy cap about a centimetre thick. Wide, foamy collar with a modest ring of lacing adjacent; visually this is a reasonably impressive beer. 'Fruity' would probably be the most succinct way to describe the aroma, but one could easily go into more depth than that. There's lots of citrus, with juicy sweet mandarin orange complemented by notes of peach, marmalade, pineapple and pear. Off in the background there's some much subtler hints of grassy straw, as well as a spicy, yeasty quality whose exact nature is hard to nail down.

Interesting; the fruit-forward leanings of the bouquet carry over into the flavour profile, and complement the base Belgian ale nicely. Pale malts provide a crackery, lightly grainy background sweetness, while flavours of stone fruit, cantaloupe, pear, mango and banana provide added layers of complexity. The citrusy facets become more noticeable toward the back end, with juicy mandarin orange soon giving way to pithier, oilier notes of grapefruit and some floral astringency. Peppery finish, followed by a mostly dry aftertaste. Roughly medium in body, with gentle carbonation levels that are lower than I prefer from my Belgian pales. Feels smooth in the mouth, and maybe a tad watery; still, it's very refreshing and I'm finding it difficult to muster up any further complaints.

Final Grade: 4.00, an A-. Koru takes what would otherwise be a relatively mundane Belgian pale ale, and then infuses new life into it by employing two relatively exotic and exciting Kiwi hop strains. Beau's takes a lot of flak from certain segments of the beer geek population in this province, not all of it undeserved - but quality releases such as Koru will eventually wear away at those preconceptions... at least, if they're released consistently. I still don't think it's really worth the 8 dollar price tag, but it's a very nice beer nonetheless.

600 ml bottle served at cellar temperature into a pint glass. Purchased from the LCBO for $7.95 CDN. Batch 4912, bottled February 12, 2016.

Appearance - clear and rich golden color, topped by a finger of semi-long lasting head and minimal lacing. Light amount of carbonation is visible.

Smell - grainy and somewhat earthy, with a slight sweet aroma of powdery yeast.

Taste - light subtle flavours, a hint of fruit which combines oranges, passion fruit and orchard fruits. Some light grassy flavours and hints of light roasted grain. A subtle earthy note too, makes me think that honey is somehow involved.

Mouthfeel - smooth and light bodied, low carbonation.

Overall - a tasty Belgian ale, but lacks a bit of a punch of some of the others in the style. Just misses the mark to my taste, but if you can spare the change it may be worthy. Shot.
