We were in Passau for a stop on our Danube River cruise. Passau is a city of three rivers. The Danube flows from the west with the Inn River coming up from Austria in the south and the Ilz River coming down from Bohemia (Czech Republic) in the north. All three rivers join near the same point and the Danube continues on to the east.

While looking for a place to have a beer, we were walking along the Danube waterfront (upstream of where the rivers join), and we came to a stone retaining wall. Midway along this wall was an opening with steps leading up. Signs beside the opening led us to believe that we had found a likely place for a beer. Initially, we thought the name of the place was Innstadt as that was the biggest brightest sign. Turns out, though, that that's the name of the locally brewed beer that is featured. The signs also indicate that US credit cards are accepted but we found it better to use local currency and avoid the exchange fees associated with using our credit cards in a foreign country.

Climbing the steps lands you in the center of a large outdoor yard. During the nice weather (unfortunately for us, we were there in December), this area is open as the Biergarten. It looks like it would be a great place to sit outside watching the river traffic and sipping suds. To the right rear of the Biergarten is the entrance to the restaurant. As you enter, ahead and to your left is the smallish bar and to the right is the dining room. We were greeted by what must have been the whole staff (we were the only customers at that particular time) who were very friendly. One of them seated us at a table next to a window.

My wife just asked for "a Bier" while I asked if they had anything "dark". The waiter returned with a regular draft beer in a Pilsner glass. Turns out that this was Innstadt Neues Helles which is a very tasty Bavarian Helles style lager. For me, the waiter placed a 500ml swing-top bottle of Innstadt Extra Schwarze which he proceded to open and pour into a glass mug. One taste and I was in heaven - no way I could stop at just one. It's a Schwarzbier to die for.

Our waiter spoke passable English but it turns out that the owner spends about a month out of each year visiting the US. Obviously, his English is fluent. The staff are friendly, communication is easy, and the beer is great. Oh yeah, the food is good also. My wife had the Weisswurst which are boiled white sausages and they were very good. Me, I was on a liquid diet, more Extra Schwarze!
