Supposedly an English/American hybrid of a barleywine. I have no clue what that means.

This carries a heavy malty sweet character. Thick, it is. In both body and profile.

It's an easy drinker, though not overly inspiring. The highly malty sweet edge is a bit much at times, but it's a nice enough drinker. I am sure some age would do this well, but in an establishment like this, that is an unreasonable expectation in that the beer is made to be sold immediately to support the business.

Rock Bottom Brewery : "Old, Old Wooden Ship"
Ontap @ the Homestead, PA location.

LOOK: Clear mahogany amber with a white bubbly topping.

SMELL: Fresh baked raisin bread, ripe fruits, alcohol esters.

TASTE: Molasses, cane syrup, caramel and a presence of warming alcohol. Small nutty even chocolatey flavor and a hint of dark fruit. Light herbal hops with a mellow, unintrusive bitterness. Some booze but overall pretty enjoyable, sugary and fresh tasting.

FEEL: Full bodied, with carbonation at a soft medium.

OVERALL: A good example of an American brewery making an English style barleywine. Malty, fresh and spot on for the style.

This is a cask poor of the Pittsburgh RB's limited brew Old Old Wooden Ship, a barleywine. Had on January 1st, 2013.

Pours a mostly clear brownish red. A tan film for a head.

Smells of piney hops, caramel, buttered bread and a hint of spice.

The flavor is caramel, oak, vanilla, piney hops and a bit of maple.

Medium to thin body with no carbonation in the mouthfeel, likely a result of it being a cask poor.

A pretty good but not great BW, I'd like to try it again off a normal tap pour to see if a more carbonated body would make me like it more. As it is, I enjoyed the earthy notes in it that I am sure are a result of it being casked but I wish it had a little more body to it. Worth a try though.
