NOTE: I have been told that the Urgestiner Dunkles is not just not a dunklebock but a dopplebock - at least the '09 version is.

Is a dark cloudy brown body with ruby tints and some yeast cloudiness and has a one-finger offwhite head that is creamy and sticks around and leaves lace. A bread malt smell mixed with some caramel and roasted malts along with orange and some heavy fruits; minor hop bitterness makes up the nose. Medium-bodied and mostly smooth (gets a little sticky) but mostly plain is my one complaint. The roasted malts and yeast give it a dryish finish that is actually a little rough as it warms (ABV poking out), and while there are some sweet malts poking through (caramel/maybe butterscotch (think thick)) and hints of citric hop bitterness it passes over kind of boring. A decent dopplebock but not well-balanced and not my first choice for a dopplebock to relax with.

Went to Gordon Biersch to try their winter seasonal (Weizenbock). They had run out and recommended a seasonal they brewed between the winter and spring offerings. The Dunkles poured a cloudy brown color with a medium size head and heavy lacing. Smell was not very pronounced. The taste was not very pronounced either, some hops bitterness but primarily a very balanced and extremely smooth beer. When I asked for the name of the beer and style for the review, they called the brewer for me: 16.4 original gravity, 43 IBU's, 7.2% alcohol and Bock as the style. (no such thing as a beer geek in this place, the more you ask, the more information they provide). Mouthfeel was very rich and drinkability was too good!!! There is no way you would think this was anything stronger than 5.0. Goes down real easy and smooth. Would be a great session beer for someone who lived around the corner from Gordon Biersch.
