So this releases a big smoke smell when the can is cracked open and when poured that smoke blends with some lemon, banana, clove and yeastiness. The taste is tart and tangy up front with some peach and smoke. There is also some banana and fruity yeast. The carbonation is a bit stinging. This is a really odd but tasty beer.

SO much flavour at 3.8%, enjoyed on tap at Mondiale 2011. Big smoke yet pleasant, sweetish and medium moutheel. Hops right there, pilsner, saison yeast yields some yeasty flavour, unfiltered on tap version. A small head. I would have this frequently if I could.Only a little head.
Had in bottle 2 months alter, complex with character of smoke, yeast.

Hopfenstark "Boson De Higgs"
on tap @ Station Ho.st on 6 October 2014
$3.91 / 12 oz.

Notes: The owner/brewer just happened to be there on the day that I visited and recommended this to my friend and I. He explained the name (I was previously unaware of what the Higgs Boson particle was, although I immediately recalled seeing a television interview with Michio Kaku where he explained it, but which made no real sense to me). If I'm not mistaken, regarding the beer the name refers to a yeast or beer that they used as the starting point for this one. Anyway... It's a fairly clear gold in color beneath a short head of frothy white. Better than average head retention and lacing. The aroma is mineralish, gently spicy, grainy-wheaty, and smoky. The smoke is not bold like you might find in an Aecht Schlenkerla, but it's clear. The flavor is similar: thinly wheaty in maltiness, spicy, tart, fruity, mineralish, and more subtly smoky. It was explained that this is a rauchbier-berliner weisse-saison which kind of makes sense. There's a definite smokiness to it, as well as some tartness, but it's also got some malt and body to it and spice, so it all comes together.

Thanks to oldp0rt for this one. 750ml bottle poured into a Brooklyn Brewery snifter. This one's described as a Berliner Weisse - rauchbier - saison... I'm giddy at the thought of the flavor possibilities!

Pours a layer of course white bubbles the dissipates quickly. Beer is a semi-cloudy pale grapefruit. No lace with very thin legs. Average.

Nose is actually a nice combination of the 3 styles. Some peppercorn and other spices mixed with a healthy dose of smoke that's not overpowering. Berliner weisse lactic tartness hides in the back though and is very faint. Decent.

Opens saison yeast, coriander, clove, and spiciness. Some maple and smoke in the middle with just the slightest touch of tartness mixed in towards the end. Finish is bready, spicy, and yeasty with a mellow malt presence. Aftertaste of more clove and other spices. Huge complexity without being over-the-top.

Light bodied with moderate to ample carbonation. Slightly prickly but pretty soft in the mouth and goes down quenching and smooth. Finishes clean and spicy with a slightly lingering aftertaste. Really really drinkable.

I'm not really sure what to make of this beer but it sure is unique, complex and drinkable. Probably one of the most sessionable beers I've ever come across, this really takes the best of the 3 styles that guides it and combines them into 1 wonderful experience. The only thing holding it back from being a 5 is the lack of any real noticeable tartness. Really pretty under-the-radar. Worth seeking out.

Thanks for another big box of Quebec, Deadbolt82!
Shared with Daftcaskbc. I bust out my a-game for him, and he pours it down the drain!! ;-)

Appearance. Pours a hazy yellow straw with just a skim of white head.

Smell. Belgian yeast and light spice, some bright and sour light fruits, lightly earthy and a bit of alcohol. Couldn't pick up any smoke...

Taste. Sour grainy wheat, sweet spices, lemons and funky sweat.

Mouthfeel. Light body with a medium amount of fine carbonation.

Overall. The sour component was about all I enjoyed in this one. The flavours were a little strange and didn't work very well together for me.

Draft: Poured a murky yellow color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of light smoke with light funky notes is quite unique. Taste is also a complex mix between some smoked corn (?) and light funky yeast ester with lightly refreshing wheat malt. Body is full with limited filtration and good carbonation. Very well brewed with lots of complexity while retaining low alcohol.

Poured from a capped 750 mL bottle into a Brewer's Art goblet. Moderate hand. Bottled on 7/2014 from my interpretation of the label.

A: Hazy, golden yellow body with 1/2 finger of stark white head. Average retention for a Berliner Weiss. No lacing of note.

S: Funky smoke. Smoke house. Flourishes of lemon, citrus. hay. Coal ash. Earth. Candi sugar. Indistinct wood.

T: Smoked pale malts open with minimal tartness. A hint of farmhouse and a very faint salinity. The hops are mostly evident in the aftertaste with a slightly floral presence and light bitterness. No alcohol presence. Finish is semi-dry.

M: Light to moderate carbonation with a light body. Feels rather light, even for a Berliner Weiss.

O: I had very high hopes for this beer as the combo of Berliner Weiss, Rauchbier and saison was very intriguing. Unfortunately, I got very little Berliner Weiss aside from the body and low ABV. I found myself searching for even a hint of sour on every sip. The other two styles just came off as watered down.

Prost!

Finally was able to get my hands on this one.

Pale yellow in color. A very light veil. The head is white and disappear very quickly. Little effervescence. The aroma is citrusy with some sourness in there. Taste is also sour with citrus. Fruity. Mouthfeel is good with some effervescence. A dry finish.

Funny thing is the smokiness... Makes it unique. It's very good. The smokiness is present in the taste only, I can't get it in the aroma.

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a medium golden amber with a third of a glass of white head with good retention; active carbonation. Spicy aroma of farmhouse yeast, citrus, light stone fruit and bready malt, a hint of smoke. Wow, this is really interesting. Flavor is light wheat, bready malt, lemon, faint Belgian spicing with savory smokehouse overlaying all. Light bodied with active carbonation. A very odd and nicely balanced smoky light beer. I'm not a fan of sour Berliner styles, but this is only slightly tart and the smoke seems to take any edge off from it. This is hand-down, down the best under 4% beer I've ever had. Rather idiosynchratic, but I really liked it a lot.

A: The beer is hazy dark brownish amber in color and poured with a thin off white head that died down and left lacing covering the surface.
S: There are light aromas of roasted malts in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell but a bit more complex with some hints of malty sweetness, apple and vinegar.
M: It feels light-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The beer is surprisingly full flavored considering its light body and low alcohol content, which makes it especially interesting to drink, however the smokiness can be an acquired taste. It is a very unique hybrid of several styles of beer.

Note: Had this beer on-tap one month later and it appeared hazy light yellow in color and tasted somewhat more smokier compared to before.

Funkilicious! A lightly smoked, funky wheat beer that works surprisingly well. Bright gold color, light carbonation and a funky bouquet.

I had this on-tap at Max's during Baltimore Beer Week. Served in a sample glass.

Appearance: Pours a very light amber color with thick off white head that leaves a ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Light but very smokey. Herbal and bit tart. Some sweet malt.

Taste: Very light but there is a lot of smoke. I was very interested when I read the description and I have to say this really works. Light malt with herbal and citrus notes. A bit yeasty in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Thin body with smooth and tingly carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: I was very excited by how well this worked. So light yet so smokey. I would love to have another.
