12 oz bottle; nonic pint

A – Pours very dark brown with an inch of light tan foam. Head lingers for a while, about a cm of retention.

S – Very mild profile. Lots of chocolate and coffee, burnt notes. Sweetness on the finish.

T – Very sweet, get a lot of the honey, mild chocolate. Coffee, charred flavors perceptible only on the finish.

M – Medium carbonation, not enough to balance the sweetness. Definitely not a dry beer.

O – I like what this beer is trying to do, but there’s just not enough to get me there. Everything about it is mild, so it could be a very nice introduction to someone who’s never had a porter or a chocolate beer before. Other than the sweetness, nothing is really striking about it.

Appearance: A dark, fairly lustrous body with a light, one-finger caramel head that leaves some lacing on the side of the glass.

Smell: Some light cocoa and maltiness on the nose.

Taste: As some others have mentioned, I didn't notice any honey. There's plenty of malt, along with some sweetness from the cocoa. It's a decent Porter.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, smooth on the tongue. A good balance with the malts.

Overall: I thought this was a pretty good brew, not the best in the world, but solid. It's good to have around in the winter weather. Outside it's sleeting right now, so I guess the atmosphere is right to be drinking this.

Out of a 12 ounce bottle, with many thanks to Jon. On to the beer:

The beer is nearly black and leaves some spots of lacing on the glass. It has a pleasant dry cocoa powder aroma, mixed with a kiss of brownie mix. Luckily, the flavor isn't too sweet. Tomoyknocker delivers an easy drinking cocoa porter which leaves notes of brownie mix, brownie batter, and a dash of citrus hops. It's a light bodied beer, and I feel it's more than just a beer to snuggle with during the winter. I personally would happy to drink this as dessert during the summer.

This is my favorite Tommyknocker beer. You must get some around the holidays. Tastes like beer-flavored hot chocolate, and that's a very good thing when it's below zero outside. It's got a good porter base, but the chocolate addition really gives it a great flavor without being bitter or heavy. Light alcohol content helps too. One of my very favorite winter seasonals.

Sweetened cocoa powder in the nose, darker chocolate but not at all bitter. Taste matches the nose, with a touch of honey on the tongue in the finish. Mouthfeel is thin and and rather slick. Nothing about this suggests a winter warmer - just a simple, straightforward English porter tweaked to taste like a cup of cocoa. Needs a better-defined body and malt foundation.
