Notes: Year-round availibility. Hop Strike is a dry hopped black rye IPA. The beer is characterized by an intermingling of spicy citrus hops and chocolate malt. Substantial 78 IBUs are balanced by roasted rye resulting in a nice depth of malt character and deep color.

12 ounce bottle, "Best By" dating on the side of the label

Pours very dark brown, frothy tan head, slow to settle, leaves a nice thick collar, fine sheeting and spots of lace.

Complex nose with hints of chocolate malts, and citric hops.

Sniff leads to the palate, with more chocolate and citrus picked up.
Carbonation is on point and I'd say this is on the slightly heavier side of the mouthfeel scale.
Better then average hoppy black ale (they call it a black IPA on the label). Worth a try.

The colour is deep brown-red (70 EBC), the liquid is clear. The two finger compact brown head sinks slowly leaving some lacing.

The smell is smooth with bitter hops and roasted malts. Coffee, dark chocolate and dry malty flavours. Hints of chalk and crayons.

The taste is dry with some bitterness. Distinct notes of milk chocolate emerges. Roasted notes, some chocolate, burned rubber and dried fruits. Medium body. The aftertaste got some citric notes, crayons/wax and caramel malt. Alcohol and chocolate. Growing bitterness and hints of ashes and salt in the finish.

The carbonation is medium strong, the small bubbles short-lived. The liquid is medium smooth.

The best before date says “APR 07 14”, I guess that his beer is brewed one year before that day. That could probably explain why it taste more like an American porter/stout than a Black IPA.

Poured into a pint glass.

Pours a very nice dark amber and caramel brown with a good 0.25 inch light cream head that is dense and recedes fairly quickly. (4.5)

Starts off with some awesome grassy and herbal pine that is not too intense but very rich and fuul. There are some roasted malt notes and slight cocoa notes. Very nice aroma. Delicious mix of resinous piney hops with some nice spicy rye notes and some slight sweetness. The back end of the aroma is dominated by the rye spice and grain earthiness. (4.0)

Upon first inspection. Delicious. Rye IPA notes mixed in with some roasted, darker malts. Spicy hop notes start things off and play well with the spicy, earthy grains. There is some slight malt sweetness and a slight cocoa note as well that works well with the earthy grain, the rye spice and the resinous and spicy hops. Mouthfeel is smooth and silky with some good carbonation. (4.0) (4.0)

Very good ABA. Not strong or extremely hoppy. Great balance of the dark malts the rye spice and the hops. (4.0)

Aroma: Pleasant powdered cocoa notes up front. Earthy and piney hop notes assert their presence quickly. Doughy bread-like character that is well knit into the hop and chocolate charater.

Appearance: Dark brown pour with shoe leather edges. Sticky off-white head that retains well and laces the glass softly.

Flavor: Chocolate covered candy orange slices on the front end. Nice earthy and citrus hop character that is subdued but noticeable. Clean fermentation character. Finish is clean and dry. Aftertaste is long and bitter.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Slightly creamy and slippery. No alcohol heat.

Overall impression: This reminds me of Founder's Black Rye. Bottle says it's a "Black IPA" but the strong rye character takes it to another, much more interesting level. I haven't been impressed by anything Tommyknocker has done so I'm completely blown away by this. Strong work.

Look: Black and totally opaque with a 1/2 inch tan head and good retention and some spotty lacing

Smell: Dark roasted malts, coffee and citrus hops

Taste: The rye malt really shines through on this guy. Very nice malt flavor backed up by a hint of dark chocolate and coffee. No real hop presence

Mouthfeel: Medium body and medium carbonation

Overall: Real good black IPA and worth a try

A: Significant signs of carbonation. Little to no head. A dark purple/amber color.

S: Earthy/spicy hops. Toffee.

T: Earthy hop flavors. Some spiciness. Roasted flavors. Toffee. It's really good at first, but the aftertaste is a little weird.

M: Very carbonated. Dry finish.

Overall: An average beer. Not as good as I was hoping for, but not as good.

This is a freaking great beer. I'm going to go get some more of this.

Darkish ruby red in appearance with a nice whitish head.

I can smell hops and a bit of rye. A tiny bit of coffee too.

This beer is super balanced. I can taste the rye and the hops. It's a bit roasty too.

Mouthfeel is just a tiny bit chewy.

This is 7% but it's a session beer in my opinion.

16 ounce pint - $6.50 at Taco Mac in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Appearance: Made its way to my table a black body in appearance, ah, but wait, there are some hints of dark ruby at the far, far edges if the light strikes it just right. Slim, ivory-hued head.

Smell: Roasted grains, pithy citrus rinds, and a wafting resinous scent of cut pine garnished with a few drops of clean alcohol.

Taste: Opening roastiness with a quick shot of citrus, then, back to fire-licked grains, an ultra faint hint of chocolate, then, back to the hops with light florals and resinous pine and a single pearl onion. Medium bitterness assisted from the roasty astringency of the malts and zesty rye. Touches of lemon and grapefruit. Closes out dry, moderately roasty, and with some lingering bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Fairly smooth mouthfeel.

Overall: It's a decent brew, and, for me, one of the better releases from Tommyknocker.

pretty good bottle of brew here. smells very hoppy and lightly roasty, nothing like some of the other more heavy black india pales. flavor is bold pine forest hops and a good dark chocolate finish, bittersweet. mouthfeel is nice, plenty of bubbles, and a nice drinkable medium body. love the aftertaste and hoppy finish of this one. worthy offering from tommyknocker, and fairly priced.

Poured this brew into a standard pint glass, and the brew forms a thin tan head of about a pinkie in thickness. The body is jet black, but shows off dark ruby red hues when held up to sunlight.

The aroma is copper metallic, toasted graininess, floral and citrusy hops.

The flavor has a kind of milky quality, a little cocoa, lemony hops, and finishes off bitter in the way of burnt toast.

Feels mildly carbonated, full in body, oily slick, and wets the palate in the end but has a mild warmth to it.

On draft at The Lark, East Northport, NY.

Poured a deep brown hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was decent retention and lacing.

The smell featured a roasted malts, dark chocolate and a piney malt.

The taste consisted of roasted malt, charcoal and rye spice. A light sweetness and piney hop highlighted the experience.

Overall a tasty black IPA. Nice rye addition.
