better than other beers i have had from flat earth, but still a shade short of fully awesome as they go. this one has some hot peppers in the mix, which i really do think flatters the decent base beer. these guys get literally no love, despite constant evolution, a cool space, and humble vibes, i dont totally get it, and i know some of these recipes have a ways to go still, but something like this deserves at least a little credit. some light heat and smoke to this, taking the base beer to a much more complex level, elevating it, making it earthy and smoky and interesting, none of which it really ever was by itself, so good on it for that. maybe pablano, but there is some heat here too, that fresh sliced, seeded, "oh crap i rubbed my eye" heat, but its not hot, really, its warming, and with all the roasted malt, chocolate character, and coffee bitterness, its quite reasonable to drink on in high volume. everyone picks favorites and it seems to me as an outsider like these guys are the last picked, but their beer really is getting better and good and they deserve more credit. this is fun session dark beer for the winter, and i had fun sharing it with my brother...
