Notes: Tindved is made in the style of a south Belgian ale with added berry, Sea Buckthorne, a pale fresh and spicy beer. Elegant in style and refreshing, plenty of acid from the berry, fermented with a wild yeast.

500 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7.0%. Hazy golden colour, moderate white head. Unusual aroma of berries and herbs (the sea buckthorn, no doubt). The flavour has just the right sweetness, not too much, but enough to secure the berry character. Interesting herbal notes. Props to HaandBryggeriet for introducing me to sea buckthorn - and to this beer.

This brew is absolutely clear with a tall white head. Thea aroma is fruity...clean and grassy. The taste is dry, mildly bitter, with the continuing fruit flavor. It is like under-ripe berries. Medium in body with a lingering aftertaste. Different.

A: The beer is crystal clear yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a short bright white head that died down and eventually completely faded away. The beer starts to become cloudy once you start pouring out from near the bottom of the barrel.
S: Light aromas of sour fruit are present in the nose, which I presume must be that of the Sea Buckthorne.
T: The taste follows the smell, having a bit of sourness and slightly stronger flavors of the Sea Buckthorne, which seem to be like white grapes and lychee fruit. It's neither sweet nor bitter.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I found this beer to be rather enjoyable and quite interesting. The delicate nature of the beer really allows you to get all of the Sea Buckthorne.

Pours with loose white head and tiny bubbles. Dissipates slowly leaving moderate, lasting lacing.

Aroma of mild funk, lemon and tropical fruit.

Taste is mild / moderately tart with fruit flavors. Finishes really clean, swiping my gums for more. Makes you want another sip. Carbonation is perfect for this style of beer. My favorite so far from the Berry Collection.

For the next few reviews I visited Plonk! a bottleshop with Canberra's largest selection of imported beers. Needless to say I came home with quite a haul (and quite a big chunk out of the old bank account!). Some weird and wonderful reviews will be coming up and the first to go is HaandBryggeriet's Tindved. The only other HaandBryggeriet brew I've reviewed was their Kreklingøl crowberry ale, and that made a mess all over my keyboard - I will open the bottle in the kitchen this time.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a Chimay chalice.

A: This HaandBryggeriet was the opposite to the Kreklingøl when opening - it hardly fizzed at all. The body presented a cloudy golden sunrise with a very minimal white lacing on top. My keyboard is happier with this brew.

S: The aroma is intriguing to say the least: white wine, honey, pepper, coriander seeds and a distinct herbal note combine quite well. From the aroma I would imagine a dry, spicy flavour with a bitter herbal finish. Another couple whiffs really brings out the vinous characters, nice.

T: Wow! This one packs a few tricks up its sleeve - sweet honey, Riesling and pepper mix in with tart herbal acidity and sharp lemon rind bitterness, there is some saltiness in there as well. The bitter and salt flavours really linger on in the after taste. This is indeed a unique brew.

M: Medium bodied with a fizzy but dense packed carbonation.

D: This has got to be the most interesting beer I've tried all year (and don't worry I will certainly up the stakes with the next one). It's hard to pin down due to the variety of flavours swirling around my Gustatory system; it's sweet, bitter, tart and salty at the same time - perhaps there is a little bit too much going on, and perhaps the after taste is a bit forceful, but damn it I like it! I don't know what a Sea Buckthorn is but I imagine it has something to do with that dry salty flavour present throughout this beer.

Food match: I would treat this beer like a dry white wine and serve it with creamy pasta or seafood, good clean flavours would work well.

500ml bottle, brewed with 'sea-buckthorn', a native Norwegian plant that produces the orange-coloured gooseberry-like fruit used in producing this particular brew.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, pale golden yellow colour, with three fingers of puffy, densely foamy, and moderately bubbly eggshell white head, which leaves some decent droopy, sudsy EKG lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of grainy, sort of biscuity pale malt, a touch of spicy wheat grain, a mix of black and white aerosol pepper, musty dark fruit, earthy yeast, and some timid weedy, leafy hops. The taste is sharp table pepper up front, gritty wheat grain, softer pale malt, dry red fruit, of a sort that I have no prior experience with - big surprise - more edgy yeast, and consistently weak earthy, dead leafy hops.

The bubbles are fairly tame, but still agreeable frothy, the body on the far side of medium weight, and generally smooth, the strangely foreign fruit doing well by this metric, it would seem. It finishes quite dry, the pepper element persisting without shame, while the sharp fruitiness of the sea-buckthorn melds with the lackluster pale graininess.

An agreeable enough fruit ale, as the exotic berries seem to bring more than a simple dose of spiciness with them, rendering this otherwise standard pale ale a lot more interesting, especially given the well, well hidden elevated ABV. Not sessionable-level interesting, of course, but worthy of a singular go, should you get the chance.

Hazy golden colour with a big white head. Fair head retention.

Wheaty with a slightly tart aroma. Generic berry.

Fruity. Slightly tart. Very wheaty. Subtle but good.

Medium body with moderately high carbonation.

A really solid beer. Touches of generic berry but then I don't know what Sea Buckthorn should taste like. Quite enjoyable.
