This is a recreation of a Norwegian style naturally soured ale, aged in oak wine barrels for 18 months for the authentic sour flavour. The first wild yeast-fermented beer brewed in Norway for over 100 years.

Batch 687, brewed 20 Nov 13, bottled 15 Jun 15, consumed 3 Jan 18. Stored in 42 degree reefer, consumed at 50 degrees from a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Aroma – Oak and leather.
Head – Small (Maximum one cm, aggressive pour), brown, fizzy, gone seconds after the pour leaving a less than one mm partial ring constantly renewed by effervescence. No layer, just a five mm island in the center of the surface, constantly renewed by effervescence.
Lacing – None.
Body – The pour is a dirty brown and translucent. In the snifter it is dark brown and opaque, although around the edge, when held to the light, again we have the dirty brown translucency.
Flavor – Begins slightly sour with tannic acid and a bit of cherry. The oakiness is evident throughout although vanillin is not detected. Malt, hops, alcohol, and diacetyl are not noted. Ends with a slightly astringent after taste.
Palate – Almost medium, watery, lively carbonation.
Impression: Very nice. This is delightfully sour and the finely-bubbled effervescence provides titillation for the tongue. It seems a bit thin but is still very good. The price point seems a bit high.

Crushed this tailgating at a University of Nevada game. I believe it was football. Pours a brown color, not the cleanest, has that old world vibe to it already. Leans dark red toward the edge when held up to light. Interesting aroma, all kinds of stuff going on here (and in the mouthfeel), red wine, sour notes, wood, leather, even a little earthy old fashioned dirt.

Taste is a wine like flanders with wood and leather notes. It comes off like a very good and traditional Flanders, even though it is probably stronger and more sour than a traditional bruin. Plenty of older dark fruit red grape notes. Just a slight breath of acetic acid to it. Definitely one of the best in style.

500 ml bottle into a flute glass. Batch 687, brewed 11/20/13, bottled 6/15/15, had 12/8/16.

Pours a dark garnet, like cherry juice, mostly opaque with not much of a head, no real lacing. Smells of cherries, malt, some toffee, a little red wine, light oak, light vinegar on opening. A little tart and sour. The taste follows the nose with the cherries and malt, some tartness, a low level of sourness at first- more as it warms, red wine, some oak, a little lemon. Smooth, appropriately carbonated, seems a little lighter bodied for the style, but it's adequate.

Really good flavor, has it's own twist on the style. Very enjoyable. but a little high on the price point.

Batch 469 according to bottle. 'Brygget' (brewed?) 27.04.14. Best by 02.10.17.

Dark red-brown color with clarity around the edges. Minimal head that faded fast. Interesting aroma of 'sour wood,' musty red grapes, with a hint of nail polish. Deeper underneath that lies a dusty, cobwebbed cellar. Taste starts with a puckering sourness that lingers into a little mid-palate sweetness and finishing like a dry wine. The low carbonation accentuates the vinous qualities. Not exactly sure what a 'Traditional Norwegian Oak Aged Ale' should ideally taste like, but this is really nice.

Pours a deep, dark mahogany beneath a slim beige head. Acetic, musty aroma...wine barrel oakiness, mild vinegar, toast, and brown sugar. Sour berries, light oaky spice, red wine, lemon acidity, crisp apple, and a slight bready sweetness. Puckering dryness on the gums, slick and tart. Pretty tasty.

From a 500ml bottle, batch 687, brewed Nov. 20, 2013, bottled Jun 15, 2015.

Pours a deep mahogany brown with maple highlights and a meager rocky head which fades back quickly. Scant retention with no lacing.

The smell is sharp as a knife, with farmhouse yeast and limes.

Taste follows the nose, wickedly sour. Dried tart cherries, lemon pulp, lime, distilled vinegar, wood ash and a clean earthiness. There is only the merest suggestion of the wine barrel lingering on the palate but the oak itself is evident throughout, from the dry start through to the tannin tackiness at the end.

Mouthfeel is clean and dry, light-to-medium bodied, very low carbonation, crisp and mouth-puckering.

Overall, the sheer tartness of the beer was initially shocking but, once I was past that, I really settled into enjoying this. The oak wine barrel character is understated and slowly reveals itself and develops as you sip. A highly serviceable beverage.
