Odin's TippleOdin's Tipple
Notes: Odin's Tipple was meant to be a strong beer, but we changed our minds...its still strong but we wont follow the mega strong trend. It should be possible to make great beer without the extreme alcohol potency. Odins Tipple is now approx 11% abv, it’s a dark almost black beer from lots and lots of chocolate malt. Its the malt that contributes the flavor...no added coffee or anything else, Its got a great body without being old engine oil and still very drinkable due to the wild yeast we use. This beer is made with a single strain of wild yeast and the recipe is dead simple.

Seriously, we have never seen a head this dark; the color even pushes the envelope of black. Sweetness in the nose of burnt dried plums, chocolate and espresso. Very viscous, crispness is all tied up in the syrupy body. Dried plum? Sure. Ripe cherries as well. Then the onslaught of charred grain. Alcohol is very warm, but the choco-like flavors weigh it down a bit. Boozy, charred wood, ripe cherries and dried plums again in the finish. Skål to epic beer!

500 ml bottle into a snifter.

Pours a dark chocolate color, opaque, with a small head, some loose cling. Oily looking. Boy, this smells really good. Rich roasted malts, lots of dark chocolate, molasses, some coffee and vanilla. Taste is roasted malts- a little less than the nose, still a lot of dark chocolate, more coffee, molasses, light vanilla, a little yeast. Really smooth for the ABV, full bodied. the taste lingers.

Nothing complex or unique, just wonderfully executed. Roasty and delicious, great chocolate flavor. Have no idea how often this comes around, but even at a very high price point, it's well worth a purchase.

Poured from 0.5L bottle into Orval chalice.

L-Black molasses pour with dark brown lacing. No head retention.

S-Roasted malts, burnt sugar, chocolate, grain.

T-Chocolate! Cocoa nibs, roasted barley, slight bitterness on the back. Alcohol well hidden.

F-Smooth and dangerous.

This beer may disappear as fast as your sobriety. Not as heavy as many Russian Imperials but better for it. Incredibly balanced and drinkable.

Poured from the bottle into my Founders snifter

A - Black body with a big brown head resting on top. Menacing looking beer.I can't imagine a stout looking much better than this.

S - Roasted malts layered on top of espresso, dark chocolate and a heavy dose of booze. Smells a bit too hot. Light notes of sweet vanilla and caramel as well.

T - Big espresso flavor on top of a bitter chocolate body. Very bright acidic coffee flavor. Hints of sweetness but not much. A bit boozy in the finish with notes of smoke as well.

M - Medium to heavy body. Light carbonation, a little sticky and a bit dry.

D - A little bit too astringent for my taste, also a bit hot. This beer might do better with some age on it. Still a pretty solid beer and certainly worth trying. I might buy another bottle and come back to this one in a few years.

A: Opaque body topped by a moderate tan head that is fairly creamy. No lacing to speak of.

S: Great coffee aromas. There are hints of cacao and smoke underneath, with a very, very mild fruity quality. No real representation from the wild yeast here or on taste, perhaps outside of this fruitiness.

T: Dominated by roasty cacao notes and coffee, with a bit of licorice and a touch of something I can best describe as mildly astringent smokiness in the finish. It isn't intense, or bad, or even ashy (though it comes close to being almost like the milder astringency of an ashy stout) it is just a little 'rough around the edges' and I think could improve with 6-12 months to smooth those rough corners.

M: Pretty creamy and silky, a bit chewy. Thinner than many an 11% RIS, but far from thin.

O: Somewhat like Lost Abbey Serpent's Stout or Dieu du Ciel! Grande Noirceur, but better than both. Reminiscent (vaguely) of Alchemist Luscious - though in this case not as good. Would love to try a BA version.

500ml savoured in my duvel glass

Pours the deepest of black and oily, with definitely the darkest 2cm head I've ever seen. Looks intimidating.

Charcoal upfront, soy sauce and abrasive permanent marker, ouch my nose just cried for mercy. As it warms, delicious whisky and cocoa nibs dominate.

Delicious, rich layers of all kinds of chocolate, liquorice, raisins, dark rum and syrupy espresso - wow! The finish showcases the most satisfyingly rich toasted malt bitterness, wow again.

The mouthfeel is something to be believed, very creamy indeed. It's like drinking some sort mythological melted chocolate that doesn't actually exist yet.

Very few times in my life will I come across such a beer that is so delicious and rewarding. Seek. Out. This. Beer.
Definitely one of the most underrated breweries out there.

A dark black, if there is such a thing. No light makes it through the body of this beer. Thin brown crown atop, leaving the glass oily and shiny.

Lots of dark, rich chocolate and roasted malt, along with a touch of an earthy/sweet molasses.

The flavor is similar to the aroma--an abundance of roasted, black malts, earthy bitterness, and lots of dark chocolate.

Full in body with low-moderate carbonation.

Big, bold, expressive, flavorful, and bitter. A great imperial stout.

Pitch, oily, light sucking black with a big, short lasted, creamy, chocolate brown head.

Amazingly fruity with a big alcohol hit as well. There's also some chocolate in here and some roast but the alcohol and fruit is intense.

Sweet malt with an oddly smooth, roasty edge. Some bitter chocolate. Complex alcohol and some fruity esters add an amazing amount of depth. A big, sweet, somewhat roasty RIS.

Full body with moderate carbonation. Surprisingly oily.

Delicious malt with some excellent ancillary character. I find this a bit boozy but see a wonderful underlying beer.
