Notes / Commercial Description:
Odin's Tipple was meant to be a strong beer, but we changed our minds...its still strong but we wont follow the mega strong trend. It should be possible to make great beer without the extreme alcohol potency. Odins Tipple is now approx 11% abv, it’s a dark almost black beer from lots and lots of chocolate malt. Its the malt that contributes the flavor...no added coffee or anything else, Its got a great body without being old engine oil and still very drinkable due to the wild yeast we use. This beer is made with a single strain of wild yeast and the recipe is dead simple.

july 15 B 874 batch
pours super dark brown with a reddish hue and
a typical burnt butter colored rim.
definitely has an anise aroma.
if I get chocolate it's just a hint.
nice licorice and a hint of gingersnap taste
I could see drinking this by a roaring fire in a
hut in the norse countryside in the dead of winter!

A - Pours black with no head, just a tiny ring around the edge.
S - Not a strong aroma. Just a little bit of roasted malt.
T - Flavor is dark and roasty. More cold coffee than dark chocolate.
M - Medium mouth feel, low carbonation.
O - The label calls it a Dark Norse Ale, while BA calls it an RIS. Dark ale seems more like it. I expect more head, stronger aroma and thicker mouth feel with an RIS. A fine beer but nothing special in my book.

Pours darkness in a glass, dark brown 2-finger head, nice retention.
Clean and appropriate smell, full of roasted tones, chocolate, coffee, licorice.
Taste follows the smell plus wood tones.
Full body, mild carbonation.
RIS as it has to be.

Poured from 0.5L bottle into Orval chalice.

L-Black molasses pour with dark brown lacing. No head retention.

S-Roasted malts, burnt sugar, chocolate, grain.

T-Chocolate! Cocoa nibs, roasted barley, slight bitterness on the back. Alcohol well hidden.

F-Smooth and dangerous.

This beer may disappear as fast as your sobriety. Not as heavy as many Russian Imperials but better for it. Incredibly balanced and drinkable.

500 ml bottle into a snifter.

Pours a dark chocolate color, opaque, with a small head, some loose cling. Oily looking. Boy, this smells really good. Rich roasted malts, lots of dark chocolate, molasses, some coffee and vanilla. Taste is roasted malts- a little less than the nose, still a lot of dark chocolate, more coffee, molasses, light vanilla, a little yeast. Really smooth for the ABV, full bodied. the taste lingers.

Nothing complex or unique, just wonderfully executed. Roasty and delicious, great chocolate flavor. Have no idea how often this comes around, but even at a very high price point, it's well worth a purchase.

October 2015 batch 906. The label says Dark Norse Ale and I wasn't sure what to expect, but BA labels it as an RIS. For an RIS it's very smoky and I'm not sure it fits the style. That being said, the mouthfeel is fantastic as is the aroma: chocolate, plums and a hint of cherry. Overall this was a delicious beer.
