A - Viscous looking dark amber maple syrup beer with no head. Sedentary layer of micro bubbles on top and hardly any rising carbonation.

S - Seems to have the nose of a 2IPA with a deep dark floral hop aroma. Fruity esters, grape skin, dried fruit sugar, candied fruit.

T - Chalky malt sweetness up front, fruity floral notes. Bitter and hoppy, with a more buttery side appearing midway. There is a big hop presence here which I wasn't expecting. It gives a steady bitterness, and a range of hop character throughout. There are fruity notes like wine grapes, fruit skin and boozy fruit sugars. A nice alcohol warmth shows itself towards the finish.

M - Tingly carbonation and a medium semi-viscous body. Hop bitterness lends itself to meld with the alcohol and malt presence. A nice warming finish, almost numbing to the mouth with a clove-like effect.

O - Great blend of pros, with hops, malt, alcohol and warming notes. A perfect winter brew.

2012 Vintage poured from 12oz bottle into tasting snifter.

Dark red-mahogany with beautiful tan head which dissipated fairly quick leaving a thin outer ring of foam. Crystal clear. Nice looking beer.

Right away I smell the dark fruits..raisin, fig..etc. Also, slight nuances of toffee and nuts. The hops are there, but not overpowering...the ethanol wafting from the glass hides this well.

Great balance in this beer....the malt is very much forward, but it finishes with great hop flavor and ethanol...really great for such a strong, but yet young beer. The flavors meld really well..caramel, toffee, nuts, the dark fruits, the hop bitterness (and flavor)...and I love the slight chocolate flavor that appears as the temperature rises.

There's a residual sweetness that makes the beer seem "big" or viscous, but not out of style, or intrusive at all. The ethanol does a great job of breaking up that sweetness and allowing it to work for this beer. The carbonation is perfect...definitely on the lower side, but again, great for this style and particularly this beer.

Overall, this reminds me of their Old Ruffian Barlywine. I only bought 2 bottles because I've never had it before and wanted to try it first. Now that I have, I'm going back to buy more if there are any left :) Great beer with great aging potential! Try It!

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a snifter glass, bottled on Sept. 19, 2012. This pours a dark brown almost black with a small short lived tan head which leaves a lacing. The smells are of a little alcohol, some nice hops along with a load of caramel, some molasses. The feel is thick. The taste is great some nutty toffee, caramel, a hint of coffee. Good stuff.

12 oz. bottle poured into a Great Divide Brewing Company branded snifter

Pours a beautiful dark amber with deep jewel-like burgundy hues. The two and a half finger head is cream-colored with excellent retention. Significant wispy lacing. A lot of chocolate on the nose, some booziness, dark fruit and toffee as well. Such a complex brew. A lot of fruit notes initally, black currant, black cherries, plum, caramelized raisins. Chocolate, biscuity accents, and hints of sherry show up midpalate. Bittering hop kick and phenol alcohol join in and carry through the finish. Smooth, silky, full body with low to medium carbonation. Hibernation Ale is a wonderful brew, complex, satisfying, and supplies everything you might be looking for in an old ale. Highly recommended.

Appearance: This beer pours a crystal clear and deep garnet color and is topped with a 1/4” of off white colored head.
Smell: This beer has a rich aroma to it that is dominated by the malt but there is a small amount of hops in the background that is just noticeably there.
Taste: The taste is a complex series of flavors that just swirl in the mouth and makes for a very tasty brew that has a lot going on. A good malt backbone dominates but I can’t even begin to place all the flavors to it; there are oak notes, a little hop flavor, a small amount of alcohol burn to make it kind of warming on a chilly windy day.
Mouthfeel: This is a medium bodied beer that is a slow sipper and a good beer to look up on a chilly day anywhere in the country.

2012 vintage

Ruby red with a one inch tan head poured into a Great Divide large tulip.

Nose is caramel malt with roast coffee and chocolate.

Taste follows the nose with some vanilla and dark fruits. Alcohol is not noticeable.

Mouthfeel is perfectly balanced and creamy delicious.

Overall, I would drink this all the time. It's a great brew and the price is easy on the wallet.
