HERCULES DOUBLE IPA is not for the faint of heart. It is, however, fit for the gods. HERCULES delivers a huge amount of hops from start to finish. Its hefty backbone of nutty, malty sweetness balances its aggressive hop profile. 85 IBUs.

Poured into a snifter from a 750mL bottle.

A: Translucent bright amber/dark blonde. Clarified, not filtered, still bits of brewing components (shredded hops or sediment clumps) in the last portion of the bottle. That's always a good thing, in my book. I hate filtered beer. This is not filtered, but "clarified".

S: Slight maltiness, slight hoppiness. It's not as aromatic as some American IPAs, but what scents it does have are definitively identifying this as a strong pale ale or an IPA. It doesn't smell like a hop-bomb or an alcohol-bomb. In short, nothing to complain of here. The brewers did well.

T: Hops AA averages from the total hop additions must average around 6-10% per ounce, from what I can gather. That's just the average--there's probably some amount of high-AA hops in this beer's boil, but for the most part it seems to use just a lot of standard pale ale hops, albeit at a much higher amount than your standard American Pale Ale. I'm thinking they added a lot of hops during the boil, and maybe a few ounces in the vat at chill-time. There's very little evidence of dry-hopping. In regards to the malt profile, well, it tastes like a lot of crystal, maybe some light pilsen, and something astringently bitter that I really can't put my thumb on it right now. Cliff's Notes: It's got a lot going on, and that's a good thing! The aftertaste, after 20 seconds or so, still leaves you with an overwhelming flavor of alpha acids from the hops. Based on this, I surmise that the brewers relied heavily on using flavoring hops during the boil, instead of aroma hops at the end of/as dry hops. If they were to dry-hop this thing for a few weeks with some Willamette, just prior to bottling, well, they'd have an even bigger monster on their hands. It'd probably a blue-ribbon beer.

M: Carbonation is in balance with the flavor profile. There's some unfermented sugars left in this thing, along with a faint feel of starchiness that makes it's mouthfeel full and long-lived. Nothing to complain about, ever! Perhaps a bit of maltodextrin or some other starch additive...but there's really nothing to dog them on the mouthfeel. I wish every beer felt like this!

Overall, it's a great beer, one that I'll be going back to. Minus a few personal hop timing issues, there's nothing not to LOVE in this brew. The name "Hercules" implies strength, and it's one of the few "double" IPAs out there that actually perform to that claim. Thanks, brewers, for not completely filtering the hell out of this thing...beer is not meant to be clear! Simple translucency is key.
