Great Divide Brewing Company
Colorado, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
HERCULES DOUBLE IPA is not for the faint of heart. It is, however, fit for the gods. HERCULES delivers a huge amount of hops from start to finish. Its hefty backbone of nutty, malty sweetness balances its aggressive hop profile. 85 IBUs.

Poured out an amber/orange with a good head.
Aromas of pine/citrus.
Lots of hop in the flavor, not extremely balanced, the hops predominate from beginning to end. A little malt tries to sneak through somewhere in the middle, but the hop finish beats it down. A serious hop bomb.
Drinkability would be limited because of the alcohol content.
This would be mecca for the pure hop head. A little more malt to balance things out would be my preference.

Beautiful looking beer. Didn't get a lot from the nose, but may just be me or sinuses. Oddly enough, I got melon and a smokiness in the flavor.

A - deep brown/amber with small amounts of white head.
S - mmm, spicy hops goodness. this one smells delicious
T - slight maltiness up front but finishes with loads of hop flavor, hint of pine i think, not sure.
M - kind of light bodied I think compared others of this style, but still enjoyable. medium carbination.
D - tasty brew. I will probably buy this again sometime in the future, so if you haven't had this one give it a try.

A - Pours a clear amber with a foamy white head that quickly dissipates.

S - Hoppy and caramel sweet malt.

T - Sweet and piny up front. Slightly normalized strong hop flavor. Not as highly a multilayered variance in hop flavor like some better DIPAs, but not bad. Citrusy, bitter finish.

M - Slightly sticky, medium bodied.

Poured into a Swiss wine snifter.

Pours with a slightly cloudy orange-fruit body under a pure white head that sticks everywhere on the glass.

The nose is dripping with grapefruit and pineapple juice, with undertones of evergreen sap and assorted citrus fruits. No malts can be detected, and a hint of mint can be found underneath the citrus.

First off, this isn't a DIPA that is only hops. There is a huge malt backbone that acts as a trellis for the vines of hop flavors to climb. To the hop purist this might detract, however I find that it works well here. This beer takes the citrus route more than the evergreen route with hop flavors, but incorporates both. The hops really are wonderful, bursting with pineapple, brown-sugar drenched grapefruit, a touch of peach, mint and Ponderosa Pine sap.

The mouthfeel is excellent: The carbonation is just enough to keep this mouth-wateringly easy to quaff. Overall it maintains a smoothness that is just dandy, and the alcohol is so well hidden this might as well be 6.5% ABV.

Conclusion: This is a great ale, no doubt about that. I love the hop profile and the mouthfeel especially. My favorite of the style so far, but I have not tried that many.
