Bottled on 9/26/14: Pours motor oil pitch black color with a creamy 2 finger brown head that was full of tiny bubbles and faded slowly, leaving incredible foamy lacing coating the sides and a layer on top.

Huge coffee and chocolate smells up front, followed by oats, charred wood, vanilla, burnt coffee grinds, roasted grains, molasses, cocoa powder, dark chocolate, espresso, piney hops, roasted nuts and booze like a mix of bourbon and merlot which must be from the oak aging. Coffee, roasted notes, cocoa and booze all meld together and seem to fuse the complex aroma into a sweet attack on your nasal passage that is down-right pleasant if you like imperial stouts. There are a whole lot of earthy and grainy oat notes to go along with the booze, oak barrel, coffee and chocolate dominance, but the subtle whiffs of vanilla, dark fruit, licorice and hops really make this quite a treat to inhale.

Taste is so close to the nose that it’s scary; this beast is a combo of coffee, roasted grains, molasses, oats, dark chocolate, charred wood, vanilla, burnt coffee grinds, cocoa powder, espresso, pine cone/piney hops, roasted nuts, dark fruits like cherry or a chocolate dipped raisin, oaky wood and booze like bourbon or a dark rum. The smokiness of the oak and grains makes this a tad sweeter and more boozy, but it seems to unleash the complexities and variety of rich roasted and charred earthy tones that allows the vanilla, brown sugar and seems like syrup to ooze through with the roasted coffee bitterness that mixes well with the leafy hop spices that cruise in the background. It is very complicated with a lot going on, like all of its Yeti siblings, and this oaky version adds a nice different dynamic to the base Yeti while still delivering delicious flavor. The booze does show through so this is another slow sipper.

Mouthfeel is thick and chewy, with a heavy dense body, mild carbonation, a thin feel on the tongue and mild heat from the booze that trials off bitter, oaky and sweet at the same time with coffee, char, grains and cocoa notes that leave your mouth dry.

Another great Yeti stout that I thoroughly enjoyed and will seek out again. Complex and like a meal in a bottle, the Great Divide Yeti series of stouts has not let me down yet, so I recommend trying this great brew.

It's dark and stormy outside so I wanted a dark, rich, malty brew to go with the evening. Jackpot!

This stuff pours an opaque brown that's almost black with a thick brown head that lightens as it recedes leaving almost no film on the top but lots of nice, sticky lacing on the glass. The head is about a finger high and doesn't last too long. The smell is rich, roasted malts with caramel undertones. I didn't notice any of the vanilla mentioned on the bottle, though. Almost no hops come through at all, neither in the aroma nor in the flavor, which is, like the smell, heavy with the roasted malt with caramel, cocoa and coffee mixed in for excellent complexity. There is sweetness on the front of the tongue along with beautifully balanced bitterness as the liquid washes over that portion of my taste buds. This is one full bodied brew, almost viscous in texture, lightly carbonated, very creamy in the mouth.

Overall, this is an excellent beer, outstanding, but not truly world class. That said, however, it's a remarkably good counterpart to a sweet Russian Imperial Stout like Samuel Smith's, more bitter, less sweet. Somewhat more expensive, so I doubt I'll have another anytime soon, but still worth trying.

Appearance – (see above). Hahahaha! But seriously, it looks exactly like the regular Yeti that I had the other day. It’s just gorgeous. The head is big and full, darkly tanned, and shows great retention. It left a beautiful film along the inside of my glass.

Smell – Wow! This smells like Yeti aged in oak. OK, but it really does. The oak and alcohol give off an almost cedar kind of odor. It’s very powerful. Once you get by that you’ve got the big roasty malts and, to a much lesser degree, some dark sweets.

Taste – Kapow! This is woody, all right. It’s like drinking a regular Yeti while someone knocks you on the back of the head with a a solid oak two-by-four. The roasted malts are amazing and the wood and booze combo from the nose just blows you away. The beer is so sweet. It’s super-dark chocolate ice cream at its finest.

Mouthfeel – This is damn near full in the body and creamy smooth with a saliva slappin’ sweetness that will send drool down your cheeks. The big wood and alcohol burst will make you want to jump up and slap your mama.

Drinkability – This is a good sipping beer that I couldn’t stop gulping.

Poured into a snifter appears dark black chocolate toned opaque when held up to the light just eats up the light forms a nice sized moccha hued head leaves fine lacing down the glass as it dwindles. Aromatics contain loads of charred oak, espresso coffee, dark chocolate, whole vanilla bean character, and somewhat of a coconut appeal warming alcohol is evident in the nose. Taste well the barrel aging does mellow out some characterisitcs but it also creates new dimensions along with charred oak dark espresso roasts come coconut, toffee, and vanilla aspects to the flavor. Still rooted with dark chocolate and high bitterness the hop flavor as been subdued a bit all blended well with aging very extraordinary brew. Mouthfeel full bodied coats the palate nice thick and chewy with mellow slow bubbling carbonation, quite an experience. Drinkability...sessionable yet limited in overall number drinkability due to the pure complexity and high octane. However if tasting with friends leave this one towards the finale there's not much that can match up plus you're going to crave more of this one after the bottle runs dry.

Got this beauty today from a good friend. Turns out to be a vintage Oct 07 2010 bottle.

Chilled to cellar temp

A- poured beautiful black with a dark tan head

S- amazing. Deep roasted chocolate malt, alcohol, charred oak. It's hard to say in words.

T- Roasted caramel, burnt sugar, vanilla, bitter hops but finishes smooth with alcohol and charred oak.

M- Great body, almost chewy. Good carbonation.

O- One of the best oak aged stouts that I have ever tried

Turns out the place my friend got this has several more. I'm going to purchase the rest tomorrow.

Bottled on 10/21/15, poured into snifter.

A: almost jet black, 3 fingers of dark leather colored foam.

S: oak hits you first. There's also smoke, chocolate, hops and malt.

T: amazed that some reviews can't taste the oak. Massively oaky. I also feel like I should point out this is not bourbon barrel aged, it's aged on oak chips so there won't be bourbon flavor, but there is lots of oak and smoke and char. Some caramel and marshmallow chocolate and hops lingering at the end. A little too much oak for me.

M: pretty thick like you want a sipping beer to be but fades away quickly.

O: really great beer and my first experience with Great Divide. For those that like oak it's right there for you and I'm curious what a year or two does to this brew and what other flavors would come forth.

A: Wonderfully deeply dark and thick, like frappe motor oil. Thick lacing clings to the glass and mid sized bubbles accumulate in a sheet over the top. The look is reassuring that the brew has substance and character.
S: sweet and dark with coco powder, roasted coffee and vanilla in a barrel of wet wood. Some smoky peat and a slight hop note on the end.
T: Smooth and slightly sweet laced with vanilla notes, followed by dry chocolate and coffee. The end brings drier acridness of peat with a finish of hops that holds on the palette.
M: Oily and thick, very smooth like Oaked wine. Very low carbonation that bites only on the back end.
O: Oak barrels offer and smooth rounded vanilla flavour that like acts like a base note and brings all the flavours together. Hops at the end keep the drinker interested and challenge the vanilla. Terrific stout.

Just when I thought I had reviewed every Yeti out there, here comes one I haven't. Man these have been around, 10 years ago, these were pretty highly sought. Don't hear much these days, but that shouldn't take away from the beer's goodness. Pours a rich black with 2/3" brown head. Aroma hits the standard roasted and chocolate malt combo along with a sturdy presence of oak on it. Did not know it was both french and American, would say the American is the stronger of the two in this beer, whereas usually french is more noticeable for me. Definitely fits the "oaky" descriptor either way.

Taste has a nice touch of chocolate to it despite having no chocolate in it. The roasted malt is so pervasive that you get a coffee like component despite having no coffee. Good brewing technique and ingredients there. The oak remains pronounced, the bitterness is real, the alcohol is relatively innocuous taste wise despite almost being 10%. Solid chewy mouth feel throughout.

Its a good beer, should be interesting to see if it survives as bombers have fallen from grace, I believe they moved the base version into a 4 pack, so who knows what the future holds for this beer that probably deserves to be in the Hall of Fame at this point.

Bottle into a snifter. Dark brown pour; settles black in the glass with about 3/4 finger of khaki-colored foam. Nose is light oak, molasses, vanilla, expresso, dark chocolate, sweet candied sugar, and carmel. Overall, a sweet, choclatey aroma with a strong, roasty, coffee-esque backbone. The taste is SUPER roasty malt, dark chocolate, and rich expresso - with backing notes of vanilla, caramel, and toffee. There is a definitive roastiness/bitterness, but if you put your bigboy pants on, it's all good. Good mouthfeel - slightly dry and spicy on the finish.

Overall, lots of roasted malt and bitter chocolate. An awesome beer.

This is probably as close to perfection as a stout can get. This is pure roasted heaven. I'm not even going to spend time doing the traditional review thing. Just imagine the quintessential stout and you will find all those elements on this beer.

Strong dark chocolate aroma. Dark black pour, small tan head, lively bubbles. Head fades quickly, but mostly due to thickness of beer. Tan lacing remains. Taste is dark bitter chocolate, some hints of dark fruits,,,raspberry, blueberry. Really nice.....update for oak aged......beer is smoother than the original Yeti . Loses some of the raspberry blueberry flavor.... chocolate more pronounced and less bitter. Some woodiness, but mostly just smoother. Darker head, darker lacing. VERY EXCELLENT!!!!!!!
On tap at blend, to tulip glass.

Still a great stout. I feel like the espresso yeti i had last night was better, but that was aged almost 2 years. Splitting hairs, all Yeti are awesome.

This isn't bad, but it may be my least favorite imperial stout I've tried. This is not even an imperial stout, it's a dark IPA. Extremely hoppy. Also, I get zero oak tastes out of this. Not even a little. I guess if this wasnt an imperial stout I wouldn't have rated it so harshly.

Edit: Oak comes out just slightly after warming up. Still not enough for me.

I have sampled this monster a few times but never drank a whole bottle so I decided to pick one up this weekend,pours as black as an oil slick no light showing thru when held up to the light with creamy-like rich mocha colored head thad never settles completely leaving thick sheets of lace behind as it gradually comes down.Oh the complexities in the aroma vanilla,obviously the oak with a very noticable herbal hop leaf elemant as well.Outstanding creamy mouthfeel like marshmellow in its creamy but light airy quality,just minajory of flavors dark roast coffee,unsweetened chocolat with hints of vanilla finishing oaky and earthy.A real gem to be had wich most of you already know out there,just beautiful.

Near blackness, brilliant toasted sienna head that turns almost dark brown when you move the glass about. It never goes away. Vinous alcohol and rich caramel dominate the nose. In the taste burnt chocolates and sticky caramels make way for a wonderfully drying hop finish. Oh boy can this beer finish. The hops are huge for an imperial stout. They just resonate on the back of your palate for minutes after each blast of pine and tamarack bark. This is so spicy my nose is going nuts and my taste buds are getting fried. I love it. This is oh so bitter and dry. Just wonderful.

Big thanks to Kevin for pulling this one out - an '07 vintage nonetheless, complete with the old-school label and everything. It pours out like a black hole and is just about opaque as it gets. A decent-sized tan head forms but vanished pretty quickly... I really wasn't expecting much, given the beer's age, so any sign of carbonated life is nice.

I immediately notice some oxidation on the nose; once again, something I somewhat expected for a 6-7 year old brew, however it was mild enough to not hinder, and injected a bit of a boozy-sherry note with just a very light hint of wet cardboard. I feel like another year would push it over the edge, but at this point, it's just fine.

The nose is otherwise crowded with lots of chocolate and a pile of sweet, dark fruits; prunes, raisins, and a light undercurrent of anise and black licorice that soars from front to back. Like I mentioned, I believe the oxidation has injected a bit of sherry to the nose, so this Yeti variant smells the booziest of them all so far. Surprisingly little oak on the nose; honestly, the oak aroma is almost undetectable at this point.

Mounds of creamy chocolate and bittersweet cocoa nibs eradicate whatever taste was currently on my palate and fill it with a mild sweetness and an even more mild bitter roastiness. The oxidation lends a hand to a mild sherry booziness (this'll be the third time I've mentioned it already) that warms the throat nicely. The roast is heavier than I remember from other Yeti variants, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Dark fruits are heavier than I remember as well, but again, not a bad thing at all. Prunes and dates, sweet and dark and even lightly tart for just a split second, before leaving into a dry oak finish. Finally, I taste some oak! For being "oak aged" the beer is shockingly devoid of much oak at all, except for the very back end, where a hint of wood and vanilla finally make an appearance. The body is medium-heavy with a slick, oily, and almost creamy mouth feel; soft and light carbonation.

The finish contained just a mild touch of that "cardboard" like oxidation, but as long as you kept the beer in your mouth, it wasn't much of an issue. A year earlier and it probably would have been a non-factor. A year later and it might be too much. Glad to have finally had this one; I'll have to try another one fresh to see how things have changed. My least favorite of the Yeti series so far, but still a good beer when all is said and done.

The day has finally come, on which I slay the Oak-Aged Yeti. This specimen was trapped at Bailey's Taproom in Portland, transported cross-country to Roanoke in a well-packed suitcase, and now stands in chains on my desk as it's blood is let in my snifter.

It pours a murky black with a remarkable two fingers of possibly the darkest brown, creamy head I've seen, sticky with decent retention.

Aroma is vanilla bean ice cream, smoke, macaroons, mocha and espresso. Clean, pleasant, and unique.

Taste is similar to the smell, like a chocolate/vanilla twist soft-serve ice cream, a pleasant boozy bite all around, spicy, earthy hops tickle the tongue. It's been months since I had an imperial stout; maybe it just took something this good to get me back into them.

Mouthfeel is about as good as it gets. Carbonation is optimal, body feels like I'm drinking cake, or maybe frosting. It's about as drinkable as it should be - you're not planning on having two are you?

This was definitely worth the wait (a whole week!); if only the Oak Aged Yeti would breed locally...

Reviewed from notes scratched out on 12/9/10. I split the bottle with TCGoalie two days prior to his merry wedding.

OA Yeti pours rather black with a one-finger mocha-brown head into my large snifter. The carbonation bubbles right at the top of the body look dense and fairly fast-moving. Lacing left on the glass is great with fine squiggly strands and little blobs that appear and attach themselves to the drinking vessel.

The aroma reveals lots of freshly cut wood and sawdust that melds with dark chocolate, roasted malts, anise, and a bit of mustiness. A dark cherry fruit aroma and notes of vanilla also emerge from the glass. The oak is the most prominent aroma, but all of the scents synthesize rather nicely.

Right at the start of the sip, I get a fresh blast of chocolate and dark malts with notes of vanilla and brown sugar complementing. The oak is present throughout as a tannic bite on the sides of my mouth. However, it never overwhelms the overall flavor. The sweetness of the malts returns near the end of the sip, and is then washed away by a bitter coffee finish. This flavor is complex and titillates my brain.

A velvety creaminess envelops my mouth in a warm embrace at the same time that bitter acidity from the oak nibbles at the sides of my palate. The finish is a puckering, dry end to a lovely and extraordinary mouthfeel.

This bottle had a year and two months of age on it and I think that helped contribute to this being such a delicious and highly drinkable beverage. It was mellow and diverse-tasting, and was overall a great beer. I highly recommend Oak Aged Yeti and look forward to my next engagement with it.
