Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice glass. Bottled on October 16, 2013.

Appearance: Pours an oily pitch black with a moderate amount of bubbles. About two fingers of deep tan head which slowly fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing on the glass.

Smell: A deep, roasty, and fairly sweet dark aroma with big hints of chocolate malt, coffee, and oak. Dark roasted barley malts with big hints of bitter dark chocolate, cocoa, dark roast coffee, toast, biscuit, burnt caramel, toffee, cream, nuts, and yeast. Barrel presence with hints of oak chips, sweet vanilla, and wood. Sweet hints of burnt molasses. Solid hop backing with earthy hints of grass. Smells sweet but nicely balanced. A very good aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a very roasty and nicely sweet and bitter dark malt driven taste with some notes of oak aging. Dark roasted barley malts with a big taste of dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, cocoa, toasted bread, biscuit, cream, nuts, burnt caramel, toffee, and yeast. Good barrel presence with notes of oak, sweet vanilla, and wood. Sweet notes of molasses. Slight taste of anise. Backing notes of earthy hops adding some nice balancing bitterness. A very good big stout taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, slick, and pretty drying on the finish. Alcohol heat is pretty tame.

Overall: A great twist on an already great Imperial Stout. Big and bold with the dark malt and the hops bring some nice drying balance. The oak presence is very solid.

A: Pretty viscous pour lead to a fluffy mocha colored head. Nice lacing afterwards too.

S: Boozy coffee. Some oats and malt and old oak.

T: Awesome sweet and dark chocolate interplay. Not as much coffee, which I actually enjoy. Oak not prevalent until the after taste, and it kind of bitters out the chocolate to tie it all together. I would love to pair this with a stinky cheese.

M: Boozy but drinkable. Not as thick drinking as the pour indicates, if that makes sense. I view this one as more of a one and done (maybe dessert or winter warmer). I don't see why you'd want to session a +9.5% abv stout anyway.

Overall: Really like how the oak plays into this beer. Not overpowering at all, but you can definitely pick up on it. Decent value and worth seeking out, if you are in the mood for a stout.

The initial pour was seemingly viscous, black with brown quickly dissipating head. The nose is mocha and coffee, but the oak notes are also present. The nose also has a little bitterness.

The taste is coating from the start. Strong bite of alcohol, accompanied by chocolate notes. There is also a bitterness that resembles cherry that leads into the end if the taste. The end taste brings in the oak aging, drying the palette along with a bitterness with a pine base.

This had more bitterness and less malt notes than I would have expected. It does hit big on the flavors it brings to the table, which is why I gave it the rating I did, even though I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped.
