Style: American Barleywine

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at the start with subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, it quickly becomes aggressive with its bold hop flavors and huge hop bitterness. Ultimately, the big body, succulent sweetness and massive hop character come together to work wonders on your palate.

I do not get the hpye over this beer. Pours nicely with a mohagany/copper color and healthy head that retains nicely.

The smell is ordinary at best. Nothing pronounced.

The taste is alcohol-heavy with little else to offer... too much grassy-ness and no trace of what you hope for in a barley-wine. As it warms, a hint of caramel comes out, but it's too little, too late. The best thing is the mouthfeel: this is a full-bodied, nearly sticky beer.

Vintage 2010 poured into a wine glass

Pours a dark amber, reddish color with a khaki head that leaves ample lacing.

Very balanced aroma with plenty of malt, serious hops, and some fruity esters in the background.

This is one of the hoppiest American barleywines I've had. At first it is subtle, but the hop bitterness and flavors hit you. A definite hopheads barleywine.

Carbonation is rich and the body is average of the style.

On tap at Churchill's.

A: Dark orange with a finger of beige foam. Lots of scattered lacing.

S: A big caramel malt presence with lighter notes of bread and a slight candied quality. This is pretty hoppy, with pronounced pine and grapefruit. I don't get any alcohol in the aroma.

T: Pine and grapefruit with an upper moderate bitterness. The hops are aggressive but fitting. Malt imparts strong caramel notes and a light sweetness. Alcohol is perceivable in the finish but not offensive.

M: Upper medium in body with medium carbonation.

Overall: A good American Barleywine.
