Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.70%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
An expert blend of bold character, this Dark American Sour is a perfect culmination of 22 years of craft and ingenuity. Aged in red wine barrels, this robust offering is as sophisticated as it is sour. Notes of black cherry jam and tobacco are countered by a welcome tartness and tannic oak finish that lasts long after each sip, making 22nd Anniversary a beer you won’t soon forget.

the thing is, great divide has been making beer this interesting and good for a long time now, and its a shame they have to foil it up and charge out the wazoo to get anyone to notice it. somewhat dark, deep brown will suffice, not much head from the tap, but a cool aroma of red wine tannins and a little bacterial acidity, lemons, roasted grain, drip coffee, black cherry, raisin, tang, sweet, yum. the flavor is somewhat less compelling and evolved, a little more simple, still with the oak and the wine, still with the dried fruit notes from the malt, but a little more simplistic, cleaner, lighter. i wish this had more body, it could certainly handle it. the acidity with the dark grain is nice, and its not all sour, a little funk exists in here too, and its real tasty. lots of wood, some dry cocoa, red wine, its cool beer, lots going on, but maybe not as different and original as it would have been as say their 17th anniversary brew five years ago. things have changed, and the world has for sure caught up this one. lovely beer and worth the price, well refined and drinkable for what it is, but it could also relatively easily get lost in a crowd of these...

Pours an effervescent ruby/caramel color with a thin beige colored head. Modest head retention & lacing

S: Sourness & dark fruit, plus red grapes

T: Follows the nose, a little red grape as well up front. Red grape dryness, slight sourness & tannins as this warms. Finishes dry, slightly sour, with red grape & a little acidity

MF: Light body, lively carbonation, slight acidity

Pretty interesting, this one worked for me, well worth a go, not super sour pretty easy to drink

Was able to find this beer at $6 a goblet. Looks of wine deep red with no head and also smells of it with very little Sour Notes. Taste was pretty amazing evolved from red wine to vinegar like sourness and finished off with a sweet and bready malt. Thought it was smooth not too watery and very easy to drink at almost 9%. Overall a very great beer that was worth the price.

In a teku the beer had the appearance of a dark red wine, like a cabernet, There was no head.
Aroma of red wine vinegar and dark fruit.
Sour cherry taste, vinegar. Oak and tannins arrived late in the taste and lingered.
Tart, medium-bodied.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a dark brownish amber with a moderate amount of bubbles. Slight finger of off white head which quickly fades away.

Smell: A tart and juicy aroma with a scent of red wine, funk, and oak. Upfront barrel presence with a red wine scent of grapes, cherry, oak, tannins, and wood. Dark fruit hints of fig, raisin, prune, and dates. Some hints of brett, tobacco, and leather. Malt hints of biscuit, grains, and toast with yeast. Sweet hints of candied sugar. A pretty good sour aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a tart and juicy Sour taste with notes of red wine, funk, and oak. Upfront red wine barrel notes of cherry, grapes, oak, tannins, and wood. Notes of brett funk, leather, and tobacco. Malt notes of grains, biscuit, and toast along with yeast. Dark fruit notes of raisin, prune, fig, and dates. Sweet taste of candied sugar. A very nice taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy, tart, and drying.

Overall: A pretty solid take on a Sour. Good red wine and dark fruit flavor.

A: Pours a deep mahogany color with 2 fingers of head that quickly fizzles down to pretty much nothing

S: Cherries, berries, tannins, oak, vinous notes, and dark fruits all present

T: Follows the nose along with some tobacco and dark chocolate notes from the roasted malt. Starts off with some tartness, cherries, berries, a vinous character, and oak. Goes into the tobacco, tannins, dark chocolate, dark fruits, and even some vanilla. Finishes with a hint of the tartness and fruity notes

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation

O: As of this review, the bottle is just over 10 months old. It seems to have mellowed out a bit and is coming together very well. Very drinkable for an almost 9% sour, with the barrel and base mingling nicely. Nothing too crazy or different, but definitely solid and worth a try if you're into sours

On tap at the New England Tap House, Hooksett NH.

Very dark, almost dark brown. Some dark fruits and that sour funk in the aroma. Interesting flavor here, some berry sweetness, oak wood, maybe some wine bitterness, and a little smoke. Feels a slight fuller on the body than other wild ales I've had but it doesn't detract for me. I found I rather really enjoy this offering from GDBC!
