Another variation on the classic Yeti Imperial Stout, we added a variety of spices, vanilla and coffee to invoke the flavors of a Mexican hot chocolate (traditionally called champurrado). Spiced chocolate drinks have been part of Aztec and Mayan cuisine and culture for centuries, but they have yet to be paired up with a Yeti!

Name: Yeti Mexican Chocolate
Brewery: Great Divide
Location: Denver, CO
Style: BBA Imperial Stout
ABV: 9.5%
Date: 19 Sept 2019
I am drinking Mexican Chocolate today using a tulip glass. I served it at 48 degrees. The pour created a creamy, two-fingered, tan head with excellent retention. The color is a dark brown, nearly black, charting around SRM 36. The beer is opaque with a few carbonation bubbles. The appearance is above average for this style.
The initial aromas are chocolate, vanilla, chili, cinnamon, dark roasted malts, and caramel. The chocolate is similar to a Hershey's bar with vanilla and caramel. Nosing the glass again, I detect coffee, toasted bread crust, and molasses. The beer's aromas are similar to the Stone's beer of this style.
The flavors are cinnamon, vanilla, peppers, and Mexican-style chocolate. Sipping the glass again, I taste dark roasted malts, bready, light smoke, char, molasses, caramel, and coffee. The pepper provides heat on the end, warming up the throat.
The mouthfeel is dry and finishing thin. The body is medium and has medium carbonation.
The beer comes across as a porter. I wanted a stout, thicker, and creamy body. This is the second Yeti that I have consumed, and they have been disappointing. This one is decent. I want more body and depth.

568ml can. Bottom stamp reads 'CANNED ON: 3/9/23'.
Black colored body, with thin mahogany back lit edge. Three fingers of tan head, which eventually becomes islands and a cap. Leaves behind spots and short strings of lacing.
Aroma of roasted malts, cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate, coffee, and peppers.
Taste is roasted malts, chocolate, vanilla, coffee, cinnamon, and peppers. Rather sweet overall. All continue into the aftertaste but the coffee lingers the longest.
Thinner than medium mouth feel, with some stickiness. Coffee bitterness but sweet otherwise. Good carbonation.
Has all the flavors of a Mexican hot chocolate, but has a thinner body than expected.

Got this at the LCBO this past summer

From the ever popular 569ml can into a snifter
This 9.5% brew is listed as 8.3% by the Ontarian ABV measuring cabal.

APPEARNANCE: Pours out black and yields a three finger, medium looking, creamy tan head with great retention. Black body and no carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a full wisp cap and leaves touches of lacing on the glass as it empties.

SMELL: Roasted malts, milk chocolate, vanilla cream, hints of butterscotch and a bit of chili peppers on the nose. Pure chocolate brownies too. Bold and enticing for sure.

TASTE: Lots of chocolate and roasted flavors up front. Charred malts, milk chocolate and vanilla cream with a touch of chili peppers at the swallow. Flavorful for sure. Bold finish of roasted malts, chocolate brownies, vanilla cream, chili peppers and touches of charred malts. Some light chili heat lingers.

PALATE: Fuller body and medium carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes a bit mouth-coating. Some light chili heat lingers.

OVERALL: Great stuff. Classic Yeti for sure with very mild chili heat. Lovely stuff for sure. Nice to be able to get this stuff at the LCBO, so hopefully more Great Divide brews make their way to Ontario beer stores in the future. We used to get lots of it here in The Netherlands but then it just stopped coming. Titan and Hercules were great, as is Yeti. Would love to see them here again but if not, becoming regulars at the LCBO would be a welcome second. In any case, this Mexican Yeti was excellent. Cheers!

Can: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of chocolate notes with some faint spicy pepper notes is quite nice. Taste is also a great mix of cocoa nibs with some light roasted malt with some vanilla and faint pepper notes. Body is full with a nice creamy texture and good carbonation. Solid mix of flavors.

I bought a can at the LCBO in Ontario.
Sticker on my can says 8.3% maybe only for Canada.
Poured into glass lots of dark chocolate and coffee taste very enjoyable to drink.
Would buy again.
Cheers

19.2 oz can from the LCBO; dated Oct 20 2021 and served slightly chilled. Either the importing agency or the LCBO itself slapped an "8.3% abv" sticker onto the can.

Pours black as night, supporting two fingers of foamy, lumpy, brown-coloured head that lasts for the better part of three minutes. By that point, it has been reduced to a modest collar and some patchy film on the surface; looked good at first, but there's not a speck of lace in sight. Smells considerably more chocolatey than Yeti Classic, with dark chocolate, cacao nibs and espresso. The spice profile is subtle but intriguing, with hints of cinnamon and anise; only a little bit of booziness, with added suggestions of vanilla, molasses and woodsmoke.

A quality stout: thankfully the spices are not over-emphasized, serving more of a complementary role. I'm getting cacao and coffee at the front end, with sweeter flavours of milk chocolate, date and treacle not far behind. Dark chocolate on the back end, melding together with bitter coffee grounds, vanilla and cinnamon; hints of burnt malt, woodsmoke, cacao, peppery spice and anise linger beyond the finish, into a mildly boozy, moderately sweet aftertaste. Full-bodied, with low carbonation and a velvety texture that slides across the tongue, resulting in an exceptionally smooth, slick mouthfeel; gives you the sticky lips. Surprisingly drinkable for what it is, but it'll sneak up on ya.

Final Grade: 4.21, an A-. Mexican Chocolate Yeti is an interesting twist on one of my favourite American imperial stouts. Personally, I think the original Yeti is better, but if you're a serious fan of chocolate stouts or champurrado then I can understand why you might lean towards this variant. The spices work well alongside the roasted malts and chocolate, and while I don't know if this beer contains chiles, it does have a low-key cayenne pepper-like heat on the tail end. As with all Yetis, I'd pick this up again if given the opportunity, and probably grab a spare to stow away for short-term cellaring.

Body is as close to black as it gets, and the pour forms a dense, milk chocolate head with retention of several minutes.
Very light aroma, next to nothing.
Luscious, bittersweet chocolate syrup abounds, deep and rich, and then a deft touch of warming chili heat - I rarely enjoy a chili stout, finding a lack of balance, but this is subtly integrated and actually compliments the chocolate; a slight fruitiness, like a rum, of raisins and dates, almost like sticky toffee pudding; finish is fairly sweet, balanced by the heat and roast bitterness a bit, slightly cloying; feel is sticky, with light carbonation, full bodied; abv is well hidden.

Indulgent flavour for sure, and I really appreciate how they integrate the chili, but it's more syrupy than the regular Yeti, too much for my taste, which knocks it down a bit.
