Appearance - Rather dark - black with hints of brown at the edge. Brown head with good lacing.

Smell - Bitter coffee with chocolate and vanilla, as well as caramel malt smells.

Taste - Espresso and cocoa dominate the flavors, but the oak is very present as well. Very malty, with an interesting mix of bitter and sweet.

Mouthfeel - Oily and mildly carbonated.

Drinkability - This is where most Great Divide brews shine. For being 9% and an Imperial Stout, this one is fantastically easy drinking.

I had this on tap at the Great Divide Brewery. The espresso roast coffee beans are provided by Pablo's, which is a local coffee shop.

A - Pitch...Black. No seriously, I'm pretty sure it absorbs all wavelengths of visible light. The head is a nice dark caramel/tan color with minimal lacing.

S - Pretty much what you'd think. Imagine if you got a shot of espresso and added an ounce of chinook hop pellets to it. Now imagine if you added a little bit of caramel syrup to that. It's so warm and inviting you have to take a sip.

T - The oak tannins hit you first like if you hit a wall. That oak wall quickly fades to the espresso/coffee flavor, and that quickly fades to the deep, dark roasted barley and/or carafa taste. If you like to dive into a deep dark cup of coffee, then this is the right beer for you. They do a masterful job of balancing the coffee and the roasted barley flavors. The oak mellows it out really well.

M - Thick, but not obstructive. Enough oily texture to coat your tongue with the flavor, but then it quickly melts away.

D - This is a great dessert beer. Either as a liquid dessert or as part of a regular dessert. I'd just love to pour this over a couple of scoops of vanilla gelato.

A: Deep black color. Poured a 2 finger chocolate head with good retention. Big clingy rings of lace.

S: Big semi-sweet dark chocolate and toasted malts. Espresso is clearly donimant to the subdued oak.

T: Big toasted malt flavor up front gently yields to the dark sweet chocolate and espresso. The oak is a bit more evident than in the smell.

M: Full body. Low carbonation. Thick, rich and creamy. Silky smoothness coats the mouth and tongue.

D: This is a big beer - malt and abv. Definitely an dessert beer to savor (slowly).

Wow, did I get lucky the last time I was in Denver. Stopped by the Great Divide tap house for a quick pint, and was offered a taster. One sniff and I ordered a full glass, served in a logoed snifter, straight from the source. Doesn't get any better.
Viscous, black color, short but thick cap of foam. Swirling leaves good legs and thin lace. Very nice coffee aroma, lightly roasted. Slight chocolate, woody, and vanilla. The taste is great. The espresso coffee flavor melds nicely with the stout. More roasted malt and chocolate, and the oak and vanilla comes through as well. Rich, full body, but still easy to drink. Creamy and smooth, the alcohol is not a problem. Very enjoyable!

Needless to say, when poring over the combo ransom note/bottom of the eye chart that is the Sunset Grill's draft beer list I almost $#!+ my pants when I saw the Espresso Yeti on there and practically fell over myself ordering this one. Let's see if the collar matches the cuff...

Nothing wrong with this pour into a tulip - nothing whatsoever. Almost jet black (of course the lighting in Sunset isn't the greatest in the world so everything looks a little dark in there most of the time - if you go to the bar on the right side it's better but not on this visit). There's a head of chocolate ice cream with great thick lacing. It's actually the texture of a mash tun that I'm imagining here.

Literally smells like a cappucino - cinnamon, velvety espresso notes...a little hop grass and [email protected]$$ roasted chocolate malt.

Be SURE to let this warm a while 'cause at first sip it actually seems a little watery but 3 minutes later it's all in...copious bitter coffee and hop grass. Alcohol is a little hot but by no means obtrusive. Malt is actually on the quiet side but provides a backbone of sheer stability.

As with the taste sensation of this offering it rolls a little light out of the gate but warmth fixes all. Deep, dark and soothing. Warm as hell - not an alcohol burn...just warm. Finishes a little tight from espresso notes and hoppy bitterness.

This one goes way too quickly, but still, sip it anyway and savor as much as you can. Won't be easy - awesome stuff.

A - Deep black with a beautiful tan head that leaves some decent lacing.

S - Coffee grounds, roasted malts a little molasses and some licorice. I can detect a slightly citrusy aroma presumably from the hops as well as some mild pine notes.

T - Delicious. The coffee flavor really builds as the liquid in the glass diminishes. Roasted malts, dark chocolate and mild licorice are present with a good amount of bitterness that really made this one enjoyable for me. There is a fruity/citrus taste present that clashes with the other flavors, but becomes less notable with each sip.

M - Smooth and silky. Medium bodied.

D - This is a great beverage, but filling. Not too sweet with a nice coffee flavor, but a couple of these and I'm stuffed.

Ess-press-yo-self. Sampled a black midnight color, with a viscous appearance. A limited head with bigger bubbles. Did swirl (after a taste or two) and brought out some thicker foam. Good lacing.

The nose has a noticeable coffee aroma but somewhat hides the beer behind it. There is a light roast aroma with a subtle lactic kick to it. A minor chocolate notes that blends well with the coffee. Some woody notes with more of a vanilla thing. Some lighter yeast and alcohol notes as well but subtle.

The taste is fantastic. The coffee is blended very well with the beer itself. To start the coffee comes out first with a more espresso flavor, with more of a milky taste than lactic. The malt really blends nicely with a small bit of astringency, but nice roast and chocolate notes comes out. The vanilla characteristics back off with not much of the wood flavors. The alcohol and esters back off as well, leaving a cleaner flavor overall. Very good.

The body is big but still easy to drink. The coffee really does a nice job balancing the astringency and alcohol notes and makes this a very enjoyable beer. A silky texture with a great blend of flavors.

A - dark, deep black. Pours almost like molasses or syrup. Very nice head.

S - Very interesting smells of Prune, bourbon, chocolate and coconut.

T - Chocolate roasted malty flavors with hints of vanilla and a lingering bitterness.

M - solid bodied and amazingly smooth going down. A real joy in the mouth

D - this beer is really good and has nice complex flavors.

I love the Oak Aged Yeti from Great Divide, and was pleasantly surprised to see an Espresso version of this beer on draft in a Northeast Philadelphia bar. This was during Philly Beer Week back in March however, which may explain how we got a keg here. I recently found some notes I took on the back of someone's business card lol.

Overall this imperiel coffee stout, oak aged, brewed with espresso beans, is unfortunately a bit over the top when compared to the Oak Aged Yeti. I think this is because the Oak Aged Yeti gets its espresso/coffee/dark chocolate flavor notes more naturally, or organically, from the roasted burnt malts, so they come off more subtle. The bitterness derived from hops is really nice in both versions and helps to balance things.

The Espresso version is 9%...really its too strong for me to enjoy. It tastes too hot. I sipped a small 10 oz. glass of this beer, and I was drunk afterwards. The appearance is black, nice color, but there was zero head.

On tap at Brick Store a bit back. Good thing I kept notes!

A - dark, deep black. Did I mention the word black? BLACK. Dark brown head with awesome lacing. How do they improve upon normal Yeti? Jeez

S - oh my how this beer smells. Massive hits of coffee/espresso, caramel, roasted dark chocolate, vanilla and bit of oak. My nose said "DIVE IN, NOW!"

T - massive amounts of coffee/espresso again with a healthy amount of delicious roasted malty dark chocolateyness. The oak rocks the casbah more here than in the nose, and I'm not complaining. Just delicious

M - solid bodied and amazingly smooth going down. A real joy in the mouth

D - this beer is so f'ing delicious. Of course, the drinkability is limited by the massive body and ABV, but damn if I didn't love this. Would gladly, no, make that instantly, sample another if given the chance. Highly recommended if you can get it.

Enjoyed on a CO2/Nitro mixture at cellar temp.

A beautifull stout. Near black color with a silky, lacy dark tan head. The nose has lots if roasted malts and piney hops. These are complemented perfectly by chocolate, molasses, oak, licorice, anise, and dark fruits. The taste is even better than the smell. A delicious balance between sweet and bitter flavors. Nice full body goes down well. This is possibly the best beer Great Divide has ever made. Right up there with the best in the world.

A: Pitch black with a dark brown head with excellent retention.

S: Coffee, cream, oak, vanilla, roasted notes, nuts and a rather surprising sour note, almost sour-cream like

T: Excellent coffee balanced with a great creaminess, burnt and roasted malts. Bitter finish

ML Full bodied and great finish with good carbonation

D: This goes down too easy

The beer pours a brown black color with outstanding head retention and lacing. On the nose this beer is unbelievable. There is a HUGE aroma of espresso, coupled with licorise and chocolate. One gets a hint of underlying bitterness too, but the espresso aroma completely dominates it. On the palate this beer is a stunner. Again, one gets a huge aroma of coffee, coupled with chocolate and very noticeable bitterness. This beer is excellent now, but I'll bet a year or so of aging would result in something divine. The beer has a nice polished mouthfeel, with a bit of grittiness from what has to be some substantial hops. The beer finishes well and the alcohol is well disguised.

An extremely impressive beer from Great Divide. This is great stuff!
