Paul very graciously split a bottle of this with me on my porch last night.

Bottle 491/1104

This beer appears a near black with about one inch of beige head resting atop the darkness. There is a nice coating of lacing throughout the glass. The aroma is big, with a heavy whiskey presence followed by roasted malt and chocolate. BA Yeti is a great tasting beer, no doubt. I thoroughly enjoyed my half of the bottle. While there is certainly some noticeable heat in both the aroma and taste, I never felt that it detracted from the overall flavor of the beer. The feel is thick, viscous and wonderful with a warming alcohol finish. This beer was a treat, and I really enjoyed it.

Finally got the chance to taste this, very excited.

Pours black with a viscous offwhite head, huge legs.

Aroma is mostly bourbon with some coffee and dark roast.

Flavor is all about the bourbon and roast blending together.

Really enoyimg this, don't think I need a huge amount of it bit very tasty.

750ml bottle, 2015 vintage, poured into a Great Divide Yeti snifter glass. Enjoyed on 2.28.2016, reviewed from Tasting Journal.

The beer pours a nice jet black color, thick, oily, viscous with a thick, caramel head, great retention and lace. The aroma is great, loads of whiskey barrel, charred oak, toffee forward whiskey, molasses, chocolate, strong roasted grains with some vanilla and stone fruits. The flavors are great, booming chocolate with warm whiskey, charred oak, roasted grain and an almost coffee light roast, fusel alcohol with strap molasses, caramel, vanilla a bit of stone fruit and a lingering ashy roast. The mouthfeel is great, coating, chewy, thick full body that is very gentle, quite smooth with a dry and warm finish.

Verdict: A very enjoyable barrel aged stout from Great Divide. Yeti is arguably one of the best non barrel aged stouts, so it's no surprise that the barrel aged version is fantastic. Lots of barrel character and strong roasty and smokiness helps to balance the rich and decadent flavors, a great sipper.

Look: BA Yeti pours a dark dark brown with a slim khaki head that dissipates quickly. Carbonation appears to be bubbling up to the top from the edges. Swirling leads to some glass lacing.

Smell: An initial hit of barrel and bourbon encompasses the nose, followed by the base beer's anise and leather scent. Swirling leads to some chocolate, and possibly a slight roast.

Taste: bourbon, some barrel, chocolate, and then the anise, leather, tobacco comes out in the middle. I think the barrel really helps Yeti, as I don't like the anise much, and gives some depth. The taste finishes with a chocolate and bourbon flavor.

Feel: The body feels a bit thinner than preferred, maybe medium/medium plus. The carbonation helps the body feel a bit fuller. The finish is drying, and there's also a burn I get in the throat.

Overall: Considering my dislike of the base beer, BA Yeti is a hit for me. I like how the barrel takes the intense flavors of the base, and tones them down, while adding other flavor.

bottle #823/1104. thanks to Doodler for the chance to try this beer. split between two. my buddy gets the big portion of this beer. I'm saving mine for a special occasion down the road.

A- a vigorous pour of 10oz created two fingers of frothy brown head, not the darkest of browns, though. good lacing and head retention for a 12% IRS. the beer is a thick black motor oil like liquid. my favorite kind.

S- huge whiskey notes nearly dominate the nose. it's not all whiskey, though, which is good. you can still detect the robust roasted character of the yeti. some sweet molasses and chocolate below that.

T- a great mix of chocolate, oaky vanilla, and hoppy bitterness mix at the front and then the taste seems to amplify in to a roasty whisky finish. like a nice irish coffee. the whisky is heavy in the finish. it's in that Bourbon county strength area where you have to like heavy barrel play to love it and BCS is one of my favorite -bal stouts.

M- extremely thick stuff. seems to be much creamier than regular yeti, which is surprising. not quite the most extreme, ie. Dark Lord. maybe silky is the right word to describe it. the decadent feel may be aided by the fairly low carbonation. despite the decent head on the pour the carbonation is appropriately on the low side.

D- my 10oz pour leaves me waiting for more. I'll probably wait quite a while but I'm extemely happy I have another bottle of this to enjoy at a later date and see how it develops. despite the costs incurred acquiring the bottles it is no doubt worth it. my portion went down quick but a whole bottle could last all night

Bottle shared by someone awesome at DLD. I can't remember who, as I was three - or even four - sheets to the wind by that point, but I did make some decent beer notes on this one, so here goes.

Pours jet black and slightly viscous with a one-finger tan head that leaves some swirls on the beer.

Aroma jumps out at you with everything you want from a beer like this. Very roasty with coffee, chocolate, oak, whiskey, and vanilla.

Flavor is similarly intense and awesome. The whiskey and oak really assert themselves thanks to this beer's very long (20 month) residence in the -bals. I did not see barrels when I visited Great Divide, but hell, I guess they must be somewhere. The awesomeness of regular Yeti also comes through, with roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, and even some hops.

The mouthfeel is great, smooth and slick with fairly full body.

I am rarely one to speak badly of a -bal aged imperial stout, and this is not going to break that trend. This beer is awesome. They should make more of it. Drinkable for the 12.2%. I might be able to finish a bomber of this.

Appears an opaque black with a small, dark tan head that slowly fades out into a mild cap. Spotty bits of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of vanilla, cocoa, toasted cashews, and noticable abv.
Taste is of the vanilla, cocoa, along with espresso, cocoa beans, and bananas coming through in the flavors.
Mouthfeel is full bodied, nutty, bitey, with a slightly hot finish.

2011 vintage, bottle #1904. With this bottle, I have finally finished my trek through all of the Yeti variants (that I know of, anyway...). I feel closer to complete than before... Anyway, this stuff pours a straight obsidian topped by a finger of sienna foam. Yeah, it's good-looking, but somehow not as attractive as some of the other variants... The nose comprises whiskey, light oak, cocoa, roasted malts, maple syrup, and molasses. The taste brings in more of the same, along with more chocolate and some light red grape notes. The body is a hefty-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fairy rich feel. Overall, a damn fine stout, one that utilizes the barrel-aging very well (unsurprising). Good times.

A: Dark, dark brown in color, almost black with a 1/3 finger brown whispy, thin head that fairly quickly faded into an oil slick with a crown. There’s moderate legs, not much lacing.

S: The whiskey is front and center, though not overpowering and is followed by a little bit of nuttiness and burnt sugar.

T: Fairly unique as far as barrel aged beers go, though not super complex. This beer hides the 12% abv phenomenally and has mellowed out very well. The tastes starts off with toasted malt and some milk chocolate and then moves to a dry nuttiness. There’s not much dark fruit, no coffee, and only a little caramel. The finish has a nice amount of whiskey flavor incorporated with the aforementioned tastes as well as the faintest twinge of etoh.

M: I appreciate the nice full body and appropriately low carbonation. The aftertaste is great as well.

O: An excellent beer that I was really happy to try. I would gladly have this again any time if given the opportunity.

2011 vintage, bottle #3500.

Beer is jet black with a moderately-sized cocoa-coloured head. Fades fairly quickly but not totally. Some lace.

Huge whisky smell in the nose, along with oak and vanilla. Big cocoa smell under that. Toffee comes out more as time passes, or I get used to the smell.

Whisky, oak, vanilla, chocolate, toffee. Whisky is strong, but not quite as dominant as in the nose. Despite the strength of the whisky, it blends well with the stout. Interacts rather than dominates.

Full bodied, but not as heavy as expected. Low carbonation.

Overall, very good. Not something I would go for regularly (even if possible), but very glad to have had it now.

Reviewed from notes. 750ml bottle shared with some friends over the weekend. It poured pitch black in color with a thin tan head sticking mostly to the edges of the glass. It looked very thick and still in the glass. Pretty inviting appearance for the style.

The aroma has a big dark and bitter-sweet chocolate presence to it. I get some roasty coffee notes mixing with a little burnt bitterness as well. The bourbon is moderate, but very complimenting. The bourbon, oak and vanilla flavors really integrate well into it.

The taste has more of the dark chocolate and roasty bitterness coming out up front. In the finish is where I get more of the bourbon with some oak, vanilla and a little alcohol heat. Like the aroma, the bourbon barrel characteristics really compliment the big chocolaty, roasty coffee flavor profile of the base beer without overpowering it at all.

The mouthfeel is thick and heavy with carbonation being low. Great mouthfeel for my tastes in the style. Overall I thought it was a great beer. I really liked that the base beer shined through and the bourbon barrel flavors complimented instead of dominated. Great range of flavors to it overall and I'm sure it helps that I love the base beer to begin with.

2011 vintage, bottle #2866.

This beer pours a full bodied lifeless black in color with only the slightest beige lacing. The nose features plenty of dark roasted malt, smooth milk chocolate, bitter chocolate, light whiskey but I don't find it to be Stranahans specific. It is exceptionally smooth. The flavors are very well integrated. It features dark roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, oak, light whiskey and slight char. It's nice and even resembles some aged Dark Lords. I really like it, but it isn't too terribly far from the original. It drinks full bodied and oily, perfect for the style. Overall this is a fantastic beer, thank god it wasn't infected!

Poured part of a 750ml into a snifter.

Bottle # 378/470

Appearance - This brew looks pretty good in the glass. It produced a solid 1 1/2 finger head. The head slowly dissipated to a thin crown/ thick halo across the surface of the glass and around the perimeter. It is opaque black. Light lacing along the sides of the glass.

Smell - The scent is pretty good. The whiskey component melds very nicely with the Yeti. Vanilla and oak dominate, but the Yeti maintains a lot of its original characteristics. There is still a hint of roastiness from the chocolate malts. Lots of booze in the nose, as to be expected.

Taste - The flavor is awesome, and extremely close to the scent. The whiskey component isn't as overpowering as the other BA beers I had this evening - it doesn't cover the original flavors present in the Yeti. There are notes of Vanilla and oak, along with notes of roasty chocolate.

Mouthfeel - Medium/Full bodied. The feel is sticky and slick at the same time - the booze makes it slick. The carbonation level is right on point - nice and lively.

Drinkability - This is a really easy drinking sipping beer. The flavor was right on. I was pretty impressed with this one. I didn't think I was ever going to try it, and I am really happy I did. This would be worth searching out.

A - Pours a dark brown with a dark tan head that fades to half and sits.

S - Woody, booze, chocolate, acidic cherry - hmmmm.

T - Booze, chocolate, coffee, and a touch of cherry. Infection?

D - Mild carbonation and a heavy body.

O - Big BA Stout, slight signs of infection, but nothing that ruined the beer. Very drinkable.

I hear tell that this stout was put in whiskey barrels and then aged for 20 months rather than the intended 9 months! I suspect the added aging only helped this extraordinary stout. The color was black as night with a thin wisp of head. The nose was especially boozy with the Stranahan's whiskey making itself quite evident, along with caramel and toffee. On the palate there was a blast-o-booze, followed by burnt toffee, robust coffee flavors, bittersweet chocolate, dark brown sugar, dark fruitcake, dark raisins, Medjool dates and an exceptionally long finish.

This is a great beer! The only thing and I mean the only thing from separating this beer from the top barrel aged stouts is the feel. Otherwise for the price and the availability this beer belongs among the elite BA stouts.

Big bottle purchased by colleague at The Bobolink, The Big, OR., $10, October 2010 bottling.

Dark brown head, a bit uneven bubbles, fairly slow dissipation with significant lacing on top of uber-dark brown opaque body, no visible carbonation. Huge frickin' dark chocolate hit in the nose, re +70% cocoa, citrusy and floral hops for balance. Taste mirrors nose, really chocolatey, hops are absolutely subsumed by the huge chocolate malt profile. Mouthfeel is on the full side of medium, some effervescence but not too much. Not sure this is the most drinkable of beers, definitely worth splitting a bottle, palate wrecker to be sure. Worth a try for fans of big ass chocolate stouts. Wondering if I shouldn't seek out that Stranahan's barrel aged version...

Mad Props to Schmittymack for trading me this one, acquired about 6 months ago.... I scored a bunch of bottles when this first came out, but over promised on trades & never got to try this (this was after I let everyone know where I found it, maybe not so clever...) Thanks Dan!

Bottle 1032 of 1104 pours a thick ebony with 2+ fingers of cocoa brown fluffy head into my Vondel snifter. Nice viscous look to this, above average lacing & average head retention

S: Oaky notes & whisky/peaty scents. Dark fruit & leafy hops as this warms

T: Follows the nose along dryness, boozey dry fruit, leafy & minty hops, dark chocolate up front. Dryness, booze-soaked plums, cherries & raisins, along with more leafy hops & dark chocolate, vanilla & peaty smokey notes as this warms. Finishes dry, oaky, fruity & a touch boozey

MF: Chewy as all get out, low/smooth carbonation
& oily richness, VERY warming

Drinks pretty nicely, but the heft & complexity do weigh on you. Still a touch too boozey, probably could've let this go another 10-18 months easily IMO. Much to like here, one to cellar save for cold/wet winter's night ( like tonight! )> Merry Christmas to Me!

Another one of the stalwarts that Beachbum1975 broke out on us. Great night.
Pours a murky brown in color. There is no head forming on the pour, but there are very large bubbles all over the perimeter of the glass. Nose is a little boozy. Not quite a bourbon smell, but just boozy and a bit of an alcohol note.
I agree with Shane, this needs to warm up to near or just shy of room temperature. The flavors really come through and it gets a fuller mouthfeel. Lots of oaky, chocolatey and whiskey coming through in the flavor. Nothing is dominating, but they play off one another very well. Incredibly smooth on the mouthfeel. I don't mind the lack of carbonation, I actually prefer it in a beer of this nature. Easily the best of the Yeti's that Great Divide makes. Just wish this was more readily available and cheaper. I could find myself drinking this quite often.

Pours a deep and opaque black, no light gets through, just black, big thick brown head forms, slowly rises up and drops some nice lace spots, very good retention for the strength. Smell is nice, bourbon, vanilla, oak, chocolate, lots of roast, alcohol, dark fruit, espresso, bourbon is very well integrated. Taste is similar, very dark and roasty, bitter chocolate, bourbon, alcohol, vanilla, toffee, bit of lactic oak, very rich flavour, figs, well integrated and I could see this being outstanding in a couple years when everything melds together better. Mouthfeel is viscous and chewy, thick syrupy body, low to medium carbonation, very nice. This was a treat, I think it worked well, and it will improve over the next couple years.

2011 bottling

Appearance: Pours a pitch black color; the dark mocha head is rather small but leaves legs of lace behind

Smell: Chocolate, vanilla and subtle wafts of Bourbon; alcohol detected in the aroma

Taste: After a chocolate fudge opening, the subtle Bourbon flavors blossom on the tongue, with the hops making their presence felt by mid-palate; the barrel flavors build, after the swallow, with quite a bit of oak in the finish

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, with low to moderate carbonation

Overall: This beer has been on my radar for a while so I was shocked to see it on the shelves at Bestway today; really lives up to the billing as a top drawer barrel-aged stout but, of course, I would expect nothing less from the folks at Great Divide

Appearance: pours a beautiful and placid dark chocolate with about a finger of mocha head, that while disappearing at a fairly expectable rate, leaves a nice ring around the rim. Looks like the type of beer I'd want to take a picture of. Very still, pretty, and dessert-like. Very crisp and fine lacing dances down the side of the glass after each sip.

Smell is whiskey and molasses, mixed with some caramel and toffee notes as well. Some raisin, cherry, and earth notes in the background, as well as a smooth vanilla and a more subtle cream.

Taste: Whiskey is apparent in the taste as well, though it's not hot. I expect this one to become infinitely more complex as it warms. There's a ton of barrel notes, as well as a woody earthiness. A bit of brown sugar and molasses, but at least before this one warms, not much in the way of fruit taste--maybe some slight cherries or raisins. Sweeter notes (even a bit syrupy) come out as it warms, as well as some peppermint and anise.

Mouthfeel is good on this smooth, thick bodied brew. It's lightly carbonated, with crisp, tiny bubbles that fall flat mid-sip. Perhaps would be better if they sustained more. Slight, pleasant aftertaste of hops and whisky. This one may get better as it warms as well.

Drinkability is looow. One sip in and I know this one could easily knock me on my ass. A pleasure to drink, though.

Bottle Number: 155/470

Pours a dark brown almost black with beautiful red highlights. Smells of whiskey, roasted - almost burnt malts, and some alcohol present in the nose. First sip is bitter whiskey covering the dark fruits, raisins and plumbs along with hints of tobacco and oak. A tad lightly carbonated. The bitter finish is World Class.

The beer pours a nice brown head that dissipates fairly quickly. The beer itself looks pretty nice; it has the dark chocolate black of Russian Imperial Stout and the thinness of a whiskey. It' s a nice look that could look better but is still nice to look at.

The smell is very good. It has a nice, strong whiskey note that imparts a slightly spice and malt note that you would expect from whiskey. Fortunately, while it's strong, it isn't overwhelming. Underneath the rye are strong supporting notes of chocolate, wood oak notes, and a light vanilla with a bit of alcohol.

The taste is very similar to the smell. However, the whiskey notes are not as strong in the taste as it is in the smell. Rather, the sweet milk chocolate note seems to be the base for the rest of the notes to gather around.The whiskey still gives it a nice spice to it. There are also a nice vanilla note that runs through the taste and works well.

The feel is pretty good. It's a heavy bodied beer that has a thin feel to it due to the barrel aging. The carbonation is light and smooth.

Overall, this is a very good beer and definitely worth getting your hands on.

Pours a thick black fluid with extremely dark tan billowy head. Very difficult to top this look. Beautiful!

The smell is loaded with interesting layers. Rich caramel notes, slight roasty subdued by the barrel aging. Buttery, vanilla, oak.

Varied layers of caramel with slight hit of roast in the finish. Smooth sweet finish. Woody and vanilla notes.

Nice smooth mouthfeel, very little alcohol heat..

Very well balanced beer.
