A - Pours with two and a half fingers of dark brown foam on top of an opaque, black body. The head settles slowly and leaves thick lace on the glass.

S - A classic, barrel aged imperial stout aroma that is full of vanilla, oak, and caramel with background notes of chocolate, espresso, licorice, and toffee.

T - Sweet, thick caramel with bitter-sweet chocolate up front. Things get darker with espresso and nutty brown sugar in the middle. Lots of dark sugar in the finish with caramel, molasses, and chocolate supported by a strong whiskey character with, vanilla, oak, char, and licorice.

M - Medium-thick body, moderately low carbonation, and a sweet finish.

D - Drinkable doesn't even enter into the equation here, this is a huge, barrel aged stout and it is good at being what it is. The whiskey character is profound and unapologetic with loads of sweet vanilla and oak that work beautifully with the dark chocolate of the base beer. Really well done.

Poured into Duvel tulip-

I gave this a vigorous pour...It is really dark inky black in color with a caramel colored head that is very slight-- less than a finger. Some spotty lace is present, nothing major, but it is there.

Smell gets a little caramel, toffee and big chocolate. Roasty chocolate and whiskey. Little vanilla of hint and charred oak, but they aren't the main stars here, not even close. The hugest tastes are the chocolate and whiskey... But you get a little more of the oakiness and vanilla flavors than the nose would suggest.

The carbonation level is pretty good for a barell aged brew, and it is big and thick. Drinks very easily for a whiskey aged beer-- which is probably owed to how well-balanced this one is. The whiskey isn't kicking your teeth in with harshness, it actually blends into the flavor profile to create something better. Something balanced as an overall experience where whiskey is just a part of it.

The barrel aged and the espresso are easily the best of the Yeti line up, in my opinion, and if you see either one, pick it up.

Yeti is one of the best looking beer ever and this just proves it. Jet black with a dense, dark brown head with excellent retention and lacing, this is gorgeous. The nose is just as good, milky, creamy with a whiskey aroma that's fairly low in the mix. Roasty with dark chocolate and some coffee, the whiskey lends a mellow touch of vanilla. With a touch of alcohol (nowhere near the 12.3% indicated on the label.

The palate opens with a blend of creamy milk chocolate, whiskey heat, a mellow whiskey flavor with some vanilla and a little oak. The coffee characteristics are fairly mellow too, there's a mild sweetness mid palate. Roasty and chocolate-like, this is smooth and delicate. Full in body with a creamy, long-lasting finish with a lingering bitterness and a subtle heat, this is exceptional stuff. Too bad I'm going to have a hard time finding this again...

Review 1400: Pours dark, sludge-like consistency. The barrel aroma was all over the place the moment the cap was cracked open. The aroma is fantastic; so much barrel and chocolate notes that translate into the taste. Thick, chewy, mouthfeel. This is a full-bodied stout and I'm glad I was able to get one more bottle to age. Get it if you like BA-stouts, it's worth it, cheers!

"1st Batch 2008" (written in silver paint pen on the bottom of the bottle)

A: Dirty motor oil black with a dark brown/rust colored head. Creamy and sticky foam with good retention and lace.

S: Heavenly! Aromas of whiskey, vanilla, fudge, dark fruit, toffee, nuts, and caramel.

T: See above. Awesome whiskey flavor coupled with everything and...marshmallows!

M: Silky/creamy with a hint of alcohol heat. Near perfect levels of sweet, dry, and savory.

D: Fantastic! Hardly any trace of abv! A masterful example of a barrel aged RIS.

Poured into a Westy chalice. Black pour with a thin tan head. Great lacing as it swirls around the glass. Sweet bourbon / chocolate aroma. Very well balanced. Flavor is amazing. Smooth dark chocolate, whiskey, moderate roasted malts, and slightly warming alcohol. Mouthfeel is a bit on the thin side compared to what I expected, but still feels great on the palate.

Had this at a tasting with some fellow BAs and this one stood out among the crowd. Truly an excellent beer.

This was my lucky night! I got to sample the Barrel Aged Yeti from 2008 and 2009 courtesy of ygtbsm94(2008) and Lunch (2009). Thanks Brad and Paul!

A: The darkest black you can imagine, with a dark brown head that's only a couple of shades lighter than the brew itself. Both the 08' and 09' looked pretty much the same.

S: Chocolate and whisky make a lethal combination! Also present were bourbon (subtle, but still there), and vanilla held it all together. The 08' had a little more of a Hershey's milk chocolate quality, with the 09' was more on the bitter cacao side.

T: The 2008 was basically melted double chocolate fudge, with whisky, mild bourbon, and dessert ingredient-type vanilla. The 09', while still fantastic, had more of a dark bitter chocolate quality in general. Both had the wonderful oaky quality that sets the "Yeti" apart from many of its clones in the craft beer world.

M: The 2008 was smooth as hell, while the 2009 was a bit rough around the edges. In both cases, the oak settled the sweetness in that perfect way that only oak can.

D: After we moved on from this brew and onto other beer ventures, I noticed that there was still a small bit left in each bottle. I bypassed some of the other brews available that night so that I could have more of this one. I guess that speaks volumes as to its drinkability huh?

NOTE: The 2008 deserves and A+ and the 2009 deserves an A.

A: Inky black and super dense. A really nice half finger of super creamy, medium brown head erupts from the pour. Fades down to a quarter finger bubbly ring. Really tight, fine head on this one, and a fantastic, stark contrast with the midnight black beer. Excellent retention and beady lacing. If there is a better looking stout, I haven't seen it.

S: Dark chocolate, vanilla, caramel, roasted coconut and other nutty notes. Not very whiskey forward, but very barrel forward. I feel like my nose is in the empty barrel from which this came. A little bit of char. There is a sweetness and creaminess to this bouquet that is definitely unique. It is very chocolatey and there may be just a hint of dark fruit in the background. Smelling this beer is an experience in and of itself.

T: There is a sweetness to this on the front and the mid that is interesting. Almost a dark fruit flavor, but more drying. I've tasted this in a few select stouts and I've yet to identify what it is I am tasting. The whiskey treatment? Anyways, there is a lot here to love here. An initial dark fruit soaked in vanilla sweetness gives way to waves of chocolate. With one of the best resolutions in recent memory, BA Yeti settles into a fudge brownie decadence before resolving into coffee, mocha, and oak. The whiskey here is barely detectable. This is a focused stout, hitting all the right notes and tying everything together brilliantly.

M: Obviously this is a full bodied brew. Super creamy mouthfeel, though. There is a wonderful balance between the barrel, chocolate, and coffee notes. Each flavor is allowed to expand and develop with each sip, and Great Divide simply nails the landing. This is the Kerri Strug-on-one-good-ankle landing here. An excellent finish. Top marks.

O: Well, I love this beer. I've never had a Yeti variant before, but the base beer has to be very impressive to come out of the barrel like this. It's not very boozy or whiskey-forward, so those of you who like your BA stouts to be liquor in a glass will be disappointed. But I feel very strongly that BA Yeti focuses on the fundamental flavors and allows them to both expand and resolve beautifully here. This has to be near the best of the best. Great job, Great Divide!

Figured it was time to crack open my one and only bottle of this.

Pours close to black with little head. Though there are signs of carbonation floating around on the surface. The smell is exceptional - milk chocolate, whiskey, and vanilla. One of the better smelling beers I've had. Taste is fairly sweet, and that milk chocolate, whiskey and vanilla is again present. The milk chocolate starts out at the front, and it finishes with a bit of sweet fruit character. I don't know, maybe cherries or plums. The whiskey component is quite prominent. I'm not sure if I'd say it's too strong, but it's close. Body is medium and carbonation is light to medium. Highly recommended.

Perhaps the darkest beer I've poured. Slight head with decent retention. Good lacing.

The aroma is some of the smoothest barrel aging I've seen yet.
The regular yeti is faintly detectable beneath it, but it stands up to the bourbon as well as you could expect from most imperial stouts.

The flavor is like a yeti toned down slightly with a very smooth bourbon aging. I don't understand how people think it's hot. I think it's the best of the yetis but I think the espresso isn't far behind.

The body is nicely done. It's very creamy with a decent body. The finish is moderately dry with a slight booze stickiness.

Overall, it was perhaps the nicest of the yetis. I think given the chance I'd drink this as fresh as possible. The 2011 was very smooth.

A - Pours black as night with a nice 2 finger head that lingers briefly and dissipates leaving a thin ring around the edge of the glass

S - Candy sugars, bourbon, chocolate, vanilla, little coffee

T - taste follows the noise sweet chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, oak, coffee. Lots of sweet sugary flavors.

M - Medium Bodied, borderline thin

D - at 12+% this beer is easy to drink shared a 750 with 4 people wish i could have had more.

2011 bottle into a snifter.

Opaque, nothing could shine through this black body. Small dark brown head upon pour that moves into a ring around the edges of various sized bubbles and some swirling on the surface. Definite legging, minimal lacing.

Baker's chocolate, heavy roast espresso, and whiskey on the nose at first. None overpowering the other or offensive. As it warms vanilla and oak become a bit more apparent with sweeter dark chocolate notes. Becomes a bit hot on the alcohol as it warms.

Roast, sweet yet rich baker's chocolate, and whiskey again. A little bit of oak, vanilla, and molasses. The roast, chocolate, and barrel are exceptionally balanced. Does not deviate from the nose much at all.

Thick with almost no carbonation, sticky.

Wonderful balance between the barrel, beer, and heat on this. A real work of art. Great beer and if you have the chance, I suggest picking this up. They are still reasonable on the bay.

From South Sound tasting notes:

Poured near-black with a finger of dark mocha head. Lots of oak and vanilla bourbon in the aroma mixed with sweet chocolate and gentle roasted malt.

Moderate carbonation and an ultra-creamy, full mouthfeel. Caramel and chocolate sweetness mixed with smoke, bourbon, vanilla/oak, and molasses/licorice. Nice warm finish.

Lots of flavors going on here but it remains absolutely smooth, balanced, and tasty. A real stand-out.

Bottle #675 of 1104

Pours a thick black color and produces a dark brown head that grows and then fades. The inside of the glass is left almost completely covered by a dark foam.... You can see the thickness here.

Wow, the aroma is even thick in your nostrils. Smells wonderful.. Vanilla, bourbon, a thick almost molasses sweetness.

In the flavor the sweetness comes through more as brown sugar. Tons of vanilla and bourbon.. Light alcohol in the finish which is enhanced by the bourbon/vanilla tones. Really good. At slight moments there are moments of chocolate, but these are pushed to the rear by the bourbon notes and even a little oak in the finish. This beer is one that just keep getting more enjoyable as you work through your glass.

Body is sticky and thick. There is a slight heat that lingers, but not even close to being "hot."

A slow sipper if there ever was one. A great beer to enjoy on the night of a hurricane. Just fantastic.

On tap at the new Barrel Bar; poured into a snifter.
Appearance - pitch black, looks like a shadow; thin mocha head, leaves minimal lacing.
Smell - bourbon and chocolate, oak and some French vanilla, fantastic!
Taste - smooth bourbon, rich dark chocolate; so flavorful, so tasty!
Feel - incredibly smooth, complex and flavorful; sweet and oaky bourbon, rich and creamy chocolate!
Overall - the marriage of chocolate and bourbon is without a doubt a masterpiece! Unfortunately, the value just isn't there, given the hefty price tag.

A bottle from the bottle shop at local 44 into some snifters, split with Oglmcdgl.

Off with the shiny foil, Barrel Aged Yeti is a black ass beer. The color is pitch black with some thickness to it. A half inch of tannish, dense foam graces the top, semi sticks.

Smell is out of this world bananas. Very prominent scents of the whiskey/bourbon barrel, almost like sticking your nose into a small snifter of the elixer. A stout is buried under all the barrel with some sweet chocolate and roasted malt scents. Perfect.

Taste is mostly barrel, but the base is standing strong. Huge taste of well integrated bourbon tones with some oak and faint vanilla. The yeti brings out some chocolate and roast ith a hint of dark fruit. This stuff hits the spot.

Thinner in feel than the appearance would lead on. Not a bad thing as Ithink this brings out the barrel character more. A silky above medium bodied beer with light carb and not much heat or alcohol getting in the way.

I was floored by this stuff. Iwent in thinking this would be just another BBA sstout, which it is,but this one kicks ass. I wish I bought more.

Regular Oak Aged Yeti is one of my favorite all time beers. The whiskey barrel aging has an impact. I actually prefer the oak aged, but this is still spectacular.

Pours dark brown with short brown head. Initial smell reminds me of chocolate but with whiskey volatility. Flavor is very complex with roasted flavors, whiskey fighting for dominance. The aftertaste really shines here, initial flavors continue to evolve after you put your glass down. You know it's a big beer but not overwhelmed by the alcohol, mouthfeel is superb.

Gooo Stranahans! Pours a midnight black color with a frothy dark tan head. Not as viscous as I would have thought. Limited retention but good lacing for the tasting.

The nose is mostly whiskey. Some of the base beer is present, with a light roast and chocolate backing. But limited. Some minor oaky notes with a hint of vanilla. Some yeast characteristics but light. Some plum and raisin notes.

The taste is amazing. The beer and whiskey notes come out and blend really well together. To start there is a sweetness that quickly balances with the roast and chocolate notes from the beer. But this is then blended with a stronger vanilla flavor that slowly brings out the whiskey and oak characters. Definitely a savory beer. As it warms the yeast note come out. Sugar plums and a bit of cherry notes. A light chalky in the finish.

The body is big. This is a beer that you really need to sit on and enjoy it. Carbonation is a bit high but still good. Overall a fantastic beer.

2015 Vintage.
look: Gorgeous. Nearly opaque dark brown. Big creamy mocha head on the pour. Messy lacing.
smell: Chocolate, vanilla, and woody.Rich and well "distinguished".
taste: Wow, even better than the stellar nose. All those flavors in a rich, surprisingly mellow gentle giant.
overall: home run Great Divide. Haven't had this before but those 12 months in the barrel damn sure worked some magic.

I honestly think regular Yeti and its oak aged variants are horribly overrated, over-hopped, and underwhelming. I've heard great things about barrel aged Yeti, but I'm still not sure what possessed me to purchase a bottle, especially given that it's the most expensive beer I've ever bought.

Boy am I glad I took the plunge. Barrel aging does wonderful things to this beer. Gone is the ridiculous and wholly inappropriate hop profile, and in its place stands one of the best BA stouts I've ever had, and what is certainly the thickest. At only about four months old, this beer tastes and feels like chocolate syrup. I split this bottle with friends, and we all agreed that it was outstanding. If you like Yeti, you'll probably love it. If you, like me, cannot understand the appeal of Yeti, you might even like it more.

750ml bottle labeled 31/470.

Poured a dark black color with an averaged sized light brown head. Aromas of whisky, wood, some earthiness / dirt, roast, vanilla, and coffee. Tastes of whisky, peat, vanilla, chocolate, caramel, and brown sugar. Creamy and smooth body with the alcohol content fairly well hidden. Some what on the sweeter side.

This one is definitely a sipper. I shared this with a couple of people and I'm glad I did - as good as it was, I would have a hard time finishing off 750ml all by myself.

Pours black with a minimal dark brown head that recedes into thin ring around the glass. No lacing is left however the beer is viscous enough to leave legs.

Smells great. Dark chocolate, whiskey, vanilla, and smooth roasted malt with the vanilla aromas poking out more as the beer warms.

Tastes great as well. The flavors are similar to the aroma with dark chocolate, vanilla, roasted malt and whiskey all present however they're slightly better integrated when compared to the smell. Absurdly smooth, and while it's boozy the warming burn does more to help the beer than it does to hurt it.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's smooth and hefty with light carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I finished my glass quickly and could finish off a bottle of this myself with absolutely no problem.

Overall I've been wanting to try this for a while and I wasn't let down. Well worth seeking out, and thanks again to RustyDiamond for sharing.

2015 vintage. This is good shit. It rivals BCBS, with a chocolate flavor that reminds me of Chocolate Rain, but nearly half the price. Pitch black pour with an incredibly dark head that dissipates quickly, but leaves a nice ring. Smells like whiskey, raisins, and chocolate. Tastes similar, but I feel that I taste grains? It's all good though, delicious actually. Maybe a wee bit too carbonated, only barely. I'm sure in a year it'll only be better, which is awesome, cuz this is great. Buy this.

25 oz bottle to snifter. Dark oily black pour. Thick tan head. aroma is mellow whiskey, chocolate, toasted barley. Taste is dark chocolate, bourbon. Really smooth.

Tasting this alongside 2 versions of Weyerbacher Sunday Morning Stout. The 2015 is 12 months old, the 2016 is 1 month old; the Yeti is at about 6 months past bottling.

The Yeti is superior in my opinion. So much smoother, a touch sweeter. I think the coffee hurts the Weyerbacher, fighting with the bourbon for tastebuds.
