750 ml foiled bottle, bottle # 48. Big thanks to Denver Dave for sharing this rarity!

Pours a deep and opaque black, no light gets through, just black, big thick brown head forms, slowly rises up and drops some nice lace spots, very good retention for the strength. Smell is nice, bourbon, vanilla, oak, chocolate, lots of roast, alcohol, dark fruit, espresso, bourbon is very well integrated. Taste is similar, very dark and roasty, bitter chocolate, bourbon, alcohol, vanilla, toffee, bit of lactic oak, very rich flavour, figs, well integrated and I could see this being outstanding in a couple years when everything melds together better. Mouthfeel is viscous and chewy, thick syrupy body, low to medium carbonation, very nice. This was a treat, I think it worked well, and it will improve over the next couple years.

A - Pours a dark brown with a dark tan head that fades to half and sits.

S - Woody, booze, chocolate, acidic cherry - hmmmm.

T - Booze, chocolate, coffee, and a touch of cherry. Infection?

D - Mild carbonation and a heavy body.

O - Big BA Stout, slight signs of infection, but nothing that ruined the beer. Very drinkable.

750 ml bottle received in the White Whale 4 BIF, 2009 bottle if I'm not mistaken. Bottle 33/1104. Opened a few days before the year 2012.

It pours dark brown, nearly black, with a mocha-colored foam. In other words it looks like Yeti stout. The aroma is special though, lots of whiskey. Sweet and roasted malts behind that of course. It's very tasty, loads of bourbon flavor without any heat. Not as sweet as Eclipse, also a little thicker than Eclipse (an easy comparison as so many Eclipse variations just came out).

Very solid but not really any more special than more accessible BA stouts such as BA BORIS. Nevertheless I was glad for the chance to try it.

Second bottled the 2011 consumed. Amazingly happy it isn't infected. #2546.

A- Pure black pour. Above the body is a huge dark mocha at head, it's size and retention are both beyond most bourbon aged imperial stouts. Not much lace but some good spots.

S- Just bliss. Amazing vanilla oak barrels, whiskey, chocolate and roast malts blended and balanced to perfection. Rich and delicious. Smooth and alcohol is hidden.

T- A kick of dark cocoa powder leads off with the splendid whiskey barrels following. Vanilla seeps from the oak, whiskey bourbon adds a great but balanced flavor, caramel, roast malts, coffee beans and oak.

MF- Thick oily body really pleases the palate. Carbonation is silky smooth and at a nice low level, allowing the rich flavor to shine. Alcohol warms the palate to a great level.

Honestly the most balanced bourbon barrel aged stout I have had. The interplay between whiskey, cocoa, oak and malts just amazes me. Maybe the best I have had.

750ml bottle generously shared by jdiddy. 2011 vintage. Pours two shades shy of black with no head. Nose expresses dried cocoa. Taste is pure brilliance - cocoa, whiskey, wood and a hint of peanut butter. Mouthfeel is medium in consistency with a slight acidity and lightly oily texture. Carbonation falls just short of lively - if the carbonation dropped off a bit, it would really enhance the overall character. Overall, a very good BA RIS - not top tier, but very solid and quite enjoyable.

Pours black with a minimal dark brown head that recedes into thin ring around the glass. No lacing is left however the beer is viscous enough to leave legs.

Smells great. Dark chocolate, whiskey, vanilla, and smooth roasted malt with the vanilla aromas poking out more as the beer warms.

Tastes great as well. The flavors are similar to the aroma with dark chocolate, vanilla, roasted malt and whiskey all present however they're slightly better integrated when compared to the smell. Absurdly smooth, and while it's boozy the warming burn does more to help the beer than it does to hurt it.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's smooth and hefty with light carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I finished my glass quickly and could finish off a bottle of this myself with absolutely no problem.

Overall I've been wanting to try this for a while and I wasn't let down. Well worth seeking out, and thanks again to RustyDiamond for sharing.

Thanks to two fine traders, wyoming & fiver29, who offered me a bottle of this brew that I'd been lusting after for a long time within one week of one another. If I had to choose between these two A+ traders, I'd refuse under torture. Thanks guys, I hope we meet many times again in boxes & styrofoam peanuts.

Bottle 94/1104, split with my wife on an evening without children. Pour is dead, starless night, with some mocha scattered along its crown. Smell is absolutely, fuck-on beautiful, with the Stranahan's coming out to meet the malts dead-on, with both playing Bach in my nose hairs. Roast touches my senses, too.

Barrel Aged Yeti. Wow. This pummels my palate, then veers off in another direction, & ultimately coats my mouth about fifteen seconds after the first sip, settling in, dominating everything it touches, whisking away everything else I've tasted today (& yesterday). The barrel is something else. Vanilla & whiskey rising in Capricorn, washing all the other flavors. Deep, Hades-deep, malts provide a stunning background for the barrel. Roast comes through underneath, submissive to the whiskey but providing an offsetting bite.

The balance on this beer is simply superb. That's the only way to describe it. Drinkable? I could put away a couple of these by myself & probably wake up in Charon's boat. Swigging it is pure joy, it's silky smooth, no heat at all, no alcohol, just dark, bitter flavors melded expertly with the barrel.

Why is this not in the top 100? That's a crime. One of the best beer of 2010 for me to date, & one of the best barrel-aged beers I've had. Hats off to Great Divide, & I can't wait try the rest of this series now.

Bottle #390/470. Dark, black, head dies fast. Smells like whiskey, marshmallows, Hershey syrup, smores? The aroma is really strong and nice. Woody flavor, whiskey, chocolates, raisins, not much carbonation. I really didn't want to pay the $26 but this was good although not as good as the barrel-aged ruffian.

Totally opaque with cafe-au-lait creamy head that trails and leaves crazy webs. Amazing deep round sweet honey, golden raisin and whiskey nose.
Raisin, tea cake, cold coffee, hints of vanilla, a bit of leather, and a root beer syrup ending.
Ringing woody whiskey finish and barky nutmeg linger. Medium to full, round, smooth.

Four years aged, and the oak has not faded much. Round sweetness, not much roast but no heat either. What you want from barrel-aging.

A silent killer.

Pours a dark viscous black with a bubbly tan head. The nose has lots of wood, notes of dark chocolate, light hints of smoke meat, and some sweet malts. The flavor has lots of wood again, a litte boozy and hot, notes of malt and ashy chocolate with lots of sugar. More heat in the finish with a mdium to full body, syrupy and light carbonation. Singular and overly sweet with a bit too much heat.

massive thanks to quindog for hand delivering these puppies from the west coast. with rumors of a potential infection, i had to pop my first bottle.

2011 vintage - enjoyed in southampton irs snifter
bottle # 1306

a - brew poured a chocolatey black with a reasonable sized chocolate brown (yes chocolate can be brown or black) head that was gone within a minute leaving traces on the surface. brew looks thick and chunky...a bit more lively than most BA brews and even has some spotty lacing. attractive ris for sure. swirling rebuilds the surface magic.

s - definitely does NOT smell of any infection...in fact it has that wonderful stranahan whiskey in stout smell. i really LOVE the combo of this whiskey with stouts and porters. lots of wood, and there she is...yeti...with still plenty of hops now what 5 or 6 months since release...nice! that stranahan smell really is wonderful and blends nice with the hoppy chocolate of yeti.

t - WOW. that is a monster of a delicious beer. WHAT a beer! infection...HA! i laugh at your rumors. this beer is phenomenal. creamy and rich. milk chocolate. hersheys ain't got nothing on this beer. the stranahan whiskey is just a PERFECT match for this one (and most stouts/porters). i always found yeti to be a bit hoppy, but this one is tamed back...to perfection.

m - creamy and rich. full and coats my mouth. cooling. wonderful whiskey finish.

o - screw bourbon barrel aging. STRANAHAN ALL DAY! these barrels are magic. pappy...HAH! these barrels are the truth. every beer i've tried from these have blown me away (although i've always been more of a whiskey guy than a bourbon guy). i've heard rumors of infection, i don't know if they are true...but this bottle was divine. if you got em, pop em...can't imagine this getting much better, and i'm holding my other bottle for a little bit since if there is an infection it is certainly not wide-spread. killer beer.

Pours a pitch black color. The head is a finger high and tan in shade. General retention seems to be worse than the base beer (as expected), but the texture (read: what little is there) is every bit as creamy soft. No real lacing sticks to the glass.

At first, the aroma reveals no surprises: the big, intense, roasty, dark chocolate-coated nature of Yeti here in full force. Less prevalent is the espresso-esque hop character, instead replaced by a wondrous vanilla note that evokes white chocolate and marshmallow. Plenty of oak comes through, as does a touch of coconut. After a while, the barrel character - as nice as it is - slightly overpowers the base. So it's not a perfect marriage of barrel and awesome RIS, but it's pretty close to a perfect marriage of barrel and awesome RIS.

As it hits my palate, I get plenty of dark chocolate, roast, umami, and the raw protein-like character Yeti is famous (in my mind) for. And then the flavor quickly transitions into big notes of oak, vanilla, and dark chocolate (even a little coconut). The barrel here isn't subtle, at all. Luckily, some of the base beer's profile stages a little uprising during the aftertaste. I don't find it as perfectly balanced as regular Yeti, though. Still, quite a few barrel-aged imperial stouts wish they could be this good.

I don't find it as silky-smooth as the base - it feels a bit rough and even boozy at times. I really get lots of oak tannins, as well. Still, I'd suggest it drinks just as easily as its little brother, and that one goes down pretty easy as well. Carbonation is gentle as I expected it to be.

A lesser beer would be utterly eviscerated by the whiskey aspect this offers. Luckily, Yeti is big enough and hairy enough where the utterly un-subtle barrel aging still fails to overpower what's behind it. It's not as delicate or refined as the other Yeti variants, nor does it really improve on what regular Yeti offers. But it adds a different dimension to what is one of the best beers in the world, and that's good enough for me ($20+ a bottle good? Ehhh...I'll get back to you guys on that).

4.23/5: A crowning achievement that's only let down by the fact its standard-issue brother is an ever bigger one

Review #200! Bottle number 486 of 1104. Served from bottle into a Stone nonic. Pours pitch black with a one finger almost brown head that subsided to a minimal amount VERY slowly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout. The aroma was comprised of malt, coffee, chocolate, and a hint of alcohol. The flavor was of malt, alcohol, subtle chocolate, with a massive whiskey flavor upon swallowing that was followed up by coffee. It was heavy on the palate with low carbonation. Overall the booze in this one was quite evident to put it lightly. I wish that was not the case as I'm sure it probably masked a lot of the subtle flavors that might have been present in this one. This was still quite nice despite this fact and I recommend any Yeti fan to track this one down and enjoy it.

2008 vintage opened by ipa247.

A: Pours a near black color with raisin highlights beneath a thin dark brown head.
S: Smooth notes of vanilla, light woody barrel and oak scents, and a bite of bourbon and creamy chocolate.
T: Crazy smooth flavors of raisins, marshmallows, chocolate and vanilla with a very mild hint of warm bourbon in the finish. The aftertaste is sweet and full of raisins.
M: Full thick body, incredibly soft mouthfeel with soft carbonation, and very integrated and smooth alcohol that is a just a tiny bit warming.
O: I have a bottle of 2011 vintage that I was thinking about opening but after having this I can see it’s worth the wait. An overall thick and chewy stout.

EDIT: 2011 is an infected mess. Sour cherries galore. Damn you.

750mL bottle, batch 2.

Pours completely black, like an oil slick with a hefty mocha head that recedes to a small cap and leaves a bit of lacing and some boozy legs along the side.

The aroma is excellent - lots of heavily roasted dark malts, cocoa powder a maybe some licorice to start with. The bourbon is present with some vanilla and well as a hefty oak aroma. The aroma has much less bourbon than batch 1.

The taste does have more bourbon than the aroma, especially in the finish where there is a noticeable burn. The underlying beer is still extremely evident though with the chocolate malts and even some coffee coming through. The finish is dry and fairly oaky.

The mouthfeel is full-bodied and extremely creamy and smooth with a soft carbonation that keeps things from getting too thick on the palate.

I remember last year's being very heavy on the bourbon from start to finish and this is seems much more balanced with the underlying beer refusing to be dominated by the barrel. An excellent barrel-aged beer.

2011 bottle, 10.7% ABV.

A: Pours pitch black with one of the darkest brown heads I've seen. It's barely discernible from the body at first! Head appears quite dense and slowly fades away, leaving moderate but opaque lacing behind.

S: Whiskey initially. A bit of caramel, toffee and oak. Otherwise a strong roasted malt presence with char and chocolate. A bit of anise is present as well.

T: Again, whiskey up front, quite smooth though. Lots of toffee with some caramel, brown sugar and a strong oakiness. Creamy and smooth roasted malt follows afterward with a little char and mostly chocolate. Again, a bit of anise towards the finish. Some oak and vanilla bean resides in the aftertaste. The lingering aftertaste reminds me of vanilla beans and brownies. Delicious. Remarkably mellow given the ABV. No sharpness to the roasted malt or whiskey. Just smooth and balanced.

M: Creamy and very silky smooth. Fairly heavy.

O: Great RIS. The balance of whiskey and stout is excellent. It makes for a very smooth and well balanced beer. The mouthfeel is also stunning, so creamy and thick without being syrupy or overpoweringly heavy. Like a big irish stout. This beer honestly blew me away, it's just perfectly crafted. Period.

3.5 A: The Yeti series are sexy looking imperials, but this one is a little different. Black color. Two fingers of creamy light brown head. Retention is a good bit worse than the original and a small ring of lacing is left.

2.0 S: Hmmm. This is pretty disappointing. First of all, it doesn't really smell much like Yeti at all. Secondly, this is either showing signs of infection or the bourbon or barrels used suck. Something along the lines of tangy/earthy fruits. It isn't sour or tart, but it's like a tangy melon and apple. Perhaps a touch vegetal as well. Plenty of vanilla and oak. Despite whatever is going on with the barrel, the worst part is that I can't pick up much of what I love about Yeti. Where is the soft roastiness, the chocolate, the molasses, and the coffee?

1.5 T: Again, I'm not sure if something is wrong with this or not, but it isn't good. Tangy fruitiness and vegetal components from the bourbon. Vanilla and oak. Light roastiness, but very little in terms of the usual Yeti flavors. Something along the lines of an acrid finish.

2.5 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. This is missing the creaminess that I like in an imperial. Not particularly smooth either since the tanginess of the bourbon is distracting.

2.0 D: As someone who loves the hell out of every other Yeti variant, I must say that drinking this was exceptionally disappointing. I really hope it's just this bottle that sucks and that it isn't infected. In any case, this isn't a good beer.

***2011 Second Attempt***

Poured into a snifter. Bottle number is scratched off.

4.5 A: Black color. Three fingers of light brown creamy/frothy head. Retention is very good and lots of lacing is left behind. This is the Yeti I'm used to looking at.

4.5 S: Woohoo, this is a good bottle. Creamy chocolate, supple yet assertive roastiness, coffee, and caramel. Whiskey adds several more dimensions to a wonderful base beer - light leather, big earthiness with the smell of the water from a forest stream, and perhaps a touch of mineral as well.

4.0 T: Huge chocolate, lots of roast, coffee with cream, and plenty of caramel and molasses. The time in the barrel has smoothened out and integrated the flavors more so than they usually are. I don't know how long this was in the barrel, but it tastes a lot like the two year old Yeti I had a few months ago. Whiskey and barrel add the same qualities mentioned in the nose. Oak and a moderate vanilla is also apparent. Very nice.

4.0 M: Heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Pleasantly creamy and super smooth.

4.5 D: This is the beer I was looking for when I traded for it. Really wonderful. Unfortunately for the GD and its acolytes, I'm leaving my infected score until I get a refund for suffering through that first bottle.

A: pours black with half a finger of brown head that fades into a thin ring with little lacing.

S: lots of burnt sugar and vanilla here with sweet chocolate, toffee, and bourbon following through.

T: burnt sugar dominates here as well with toffee, vanilla, sweet cocoa, and bourbon after. The finish is moderately boozy.

M: thick, sticky sweet body with low carbonation, this beer is thick and sticky.

O: a good bbal stout, overall. Very barrel-forward and sweet, but still enjoyable.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a chalice. Bottled on date of October 15, 2015.

Appearance: Pours jet black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Slight finger of dark tan head which settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A very roasty and fairly sweet dark malt driven aroma with a scent of chocolate, coffee, and whiskey. Dark roasted barley malt with a scent of dark chocolate, coffee, biscuit, toast, smoke, caramel, toffee, nuts, and yeast. Solid barrel presence with a scent of bourbon whiskey, oak, vanilla, maple syurp, and wood. Sweet hints of molasses along with a little black licorice. Some earthy hop hints. Subtle dark fruit hints of raisin and fig. A really good aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a very roasty and rich dark malt driven taste with good notes of chocolate, coffee, and whiskey. Dark roasted barley malt with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, biscuit, toast, caramel, toffee, nuts, smoke, and yeast. Good barrel presence with notes of bourbon whiskey, vanilla, oak, maple syrup, and wood. Sweet taste of molasses. Dark fruit undertones of fig and raisin. Also some notes of leather, black licorice, and earthy hop bitterness. A really great taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Rich, chewy, and fairly syrupy. Alcohol heat is mild for 12.5%.

Overall: A really great Barrel Aged Imperial Stout. The hops are more subdued than the regular Yeti allowing for more dark fruit and balance of sweetness. Great mix of barrel and dark malt flavors.

2011 vintage, bottle #3500.

Beer is jet black with a moderately-sized cocoa-coloured head. Fades fairly quickly but not totally. Some lace.

Huge whisky smell in the nose, along with oak and vanilla. Big cocoa smell under that. Toffee comes out more as time passes, or I get used to the smell.

Whisky, oak, vanilla, chocolate, toffee. Whisky is strong, but not quite as dominant as in the nose. Despite the strength of the whisky, it blends well with the stout. Interacts rather than dominates.

Full bodied, but not as heavy as expected. Low carbonation.

Overall, very good. Not something I would go for regularly (even if possible), but very glad to have had it now.

750ml bottle, poured into a Weyerbacher tulip. Thanks to the generous soul who shared this at CdC.

A: Opaque black body, red-brown highlights, and a momentary cap of creamy brown foam. Sticky lace. Intense.

S: Big, bold, and boozy. Whiskey, coconut, coffee, dark chocolate, and earthiness. Lovely.

T: Follows the nose, deliciously. Terrific coconut, oak, whiskey, dark fruit, coffee, and chocolate. Boozy, coffee-laden finish. Great.

M: Thick, highly carbonated, and creamy. A little prickly, but good.

O: Wow, now that's a serious stout. Major barrel presence, and yet plenty of malt to stand up to it. I'd love to sit down with a bottle of this on a cold winter's night, and just sip on it for hours.

A - pours black with a chocolaty head that thing and forms a nice ring around the glass

S - chocolates and bourbon are quickly overshadowed by dirty diapers...something's up here

T - sweet chocolates up front moves to fruity sour notes. Sour citrus with chocolate and a splash of bourbon follow it up. This one is definitely infected, as the nose indicated.

M - thing with a decent carbonation burn

D - this was an infected bottle. I remember this being great and was excited to sit down and formally review it, but it just gives me an excuse to cross paths with Yeti in the future.

Thanks to Joe for sharing this bottle (2011 vintage) at a tasting in 2012. Review from notes.

Poured dark brown, looks kind of oily. Beige tan head that retained nicely, no lace. Big aromas of chocolate, wood, vanilla, and roastiness, but I'm slightly underwhelmed by the complexity of the nose. Even after letting it warm a bit, I get the same plus a slight bit of dates and piny hops. Anyway, the flavor is a better example of what's going on here. Sweet caramel and toffee in the forefront, maybe a touch of biscuit too. Immediately becomes vanilla and dark chocolate (maybe of the Lindt's 80% cocoa type), with an undertone of earthiness and bitterness from the hops. The charcoal/roasted coffee bean flavors are more prominent towards the finish of course. Body is medium, but I think a beer like this should have an even bigger body. Small potatoes I suppose. Nicely carbonated. This beer is pretty damn good. I would seek out a bottle just to complete a Yeti horizontal collection, but I wouldn't go too much out of my way to get this.

Pours a thick black color and produces a dark brown head that grows and then fades. The inside of the glass is left almost completely covered by a dark foam.... You can see the thickness here.

Wow, the aroma is even thick in your nostrils. Smells wonderful.. Vanilla, bourbon, a thick almost molasses sweetness.

In the flavor the sweetness comes through more as brown sugar. Tons of vanilla and bourbon.. Light alcohol in the finish which is enhanced by the bourbon/vanilla tones. Really good. At slight moments there are moments of chocolate, but these are pushed to the rear by the bourbon notes and even a little oak in the finish. This beer is one that just keep getting more enjoyable as you work through your glass.

Body is sticky and thick. There is a slight heat that lingers, but not even close to being "hot."

A slow sipper if there ever was one. A great beer to enjoy on the night of a hurricane. Just fantastic.

Note: Drunk immediately after the regular Yeti for comparative purposes.

APPEARANCE: Same as the regular Yeti. Pours out pitch black and thick, producing a one finger, thick, mocha colored head with great retention. Jet black body with little carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a good wisp and clings to the sides of the glass. A splotchy wisp and ring remain and leaves some dots of lacing down the glass. Thick, viscous looking imperial stout.

SMELL: Lots of bourbon here for sure. Whisky and vanilla, accompanied by some oak notes as well. Roasted malts and baker's chocolate are still there, with some smoky elements as well, but the bourbon is the main act here. The chocolate and hoppy notes take a back seat in this version, but the bold barrel presence brings other interesting things to the table.

TASTE: Yup, this is where it's at. Roasted malts and baker's chocolate still there, and are still the greeter up front. Soon after, however, the barrel assaults full force. Bourbon, vanilla, and lots of oak flavors burst though, but notes of bitter, chocolaty hops still make their way though. Well put together and incredibly well balanced. Not at all barrel dominant like the nose had suggested. Bold and lingering aftertaste or roasted malts and bitter chocolate, all well balanced and complimented by the barrel. Stupendous.

PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. The barrel has thinned out the body every so slightly, but given how thick Yeti is, this doesn't detract at all. Still very creamy smooth on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes slightly mouth-coating. Stellar feel for the style.

OVERALL: Another top notch, killer variant on the Yeti. As far as barrel aged stouts go, it doesn't get much better than this. Though the nose was quite barrel heavy, the taste profile is the perfect example of how barrel aging can add to an already wonderful base beer without dominating or spoiling it. Well integrated and superbly done. Possibly the best barrel aged stout in production. Thanks again Shaebs99. Beauty!
