Bottle purchased at Naaman's Road Total Wine in Delaware. Split over dinner with two buddies of mine.

Appearance- Pours a nice mellow shade of brown with with some busy carbonation. However, surprisingly mild head that only gradually grows to about a finger and a half. Used to more head on German style wheat beers, but what head there is does retain very well and leaves a small amount of lacing on the glass as I drink.

Smell- Lots of sweet caramel and toffee on the nose, followed closely by cloves and banana bread. Not so much the scent of fresh banana as a combination of yeastiness/breadiness/banana. A nice sweet smell with a fair amount well represented scents.

Taste- A bit less complex than the smell but still very pleasant. Lots of sweet toffee, banana, and yeastiness for the primary flavor profile. Followed up with a bit of cinnamon/cloves spices but fairly mild in the spice department compared to some dunkels that I've had.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability- Despite fairly lively carbonation, I found the mouthfeel to be a bit thinner than I like in dunkelweizen. Not initially noticeable but wateriness became more prominent as the beer warmed slightly. Although a bit on the thin side, the pleasant flavors and nice smells coming off this beer still made it quite drinkable.

Overall, a solid dunkelweizen and another solid beer from Great Divide. I've had better representations of the style, but on the whole a very good American interpretation.

Poured into my Brooklyn-Schneider Hopfen-Weisse glass a murky russett color with a great fluffy two finger white head that settled slowly into a frothy mass leaving broken chunks of lace behind in its wake.Aromas of chocolate malt and clove mainly,much more chocolate than any other of the style I have had.I hate to say it but the flavors for me are average to below average for the style for me,mainly chocolate weheat malt flavors with light clove,no complexity or nuances.I love GD,one of my favorite breweries but this really doesnt hit home for me.

22 oz bottle. Pours a reddish amber with a medium off white head that quickly diminishes to a thin film that leaves a little lacing.

The aroma is sweet bready malts, bananas and cloves.

The flavor is sweet sugary dark fruits, molasses and some fruitcake spices. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, not my favorite style and this one is too far on the sweet side for me.

Bomber pours a cloudy cola brown body with a small beige head. Good retention with some patchy lacing.

Aroma is clove, doughy bread, ripe banana, and toasted caramel.

Medium body and carbonation.

Taste is more complex than the aroma. Clove and ripe banana are joined by hazelnut, black pepper, wheat malt, yeast, and some earthy hops. Caramel adds a nice backdrop.

Nicely done. An enjoyable sipper that improves as it warms to near room temperature.

I paid $6 for a 22oz bomber which is awfully expensive for a dunkel weizen. I generally respect Great Divide so I went ahead and bought a bottle anyway. My bottle had a recent bottling date of April 17, 2009. When poured, it looked okay. The head was a bit small for a wheat beer, but it wasn't a big deal. The label claimed a German yeast was used, and the aroma seemed to back that up. I could smell a bit of banana/clove character which I like. Unfortunately, the taste was a bit disappointing. It has some of that banana/clove character, but the phenols seem to be slightly out of whack. Either that or they just don't mix well with the slightly off-putting grainy/dark flavor. I like some quality German dunkel weizen beers, but this beer has something in it that doesn't sit well with me. It's almost some sort of unpleasant dirty/dirt-ish flavor. Whatever it is, it gets worse as the beer warms. I was only able to get through half the bomber before I had to dump what was left. I like that GD is doing some new/seasonal beers, but I'll look elsewhere when it comes to dark wheat beers.

Appears a murky mahogany brown muddled hue with a nice sized light beige cream head forms thin sporadic lacing as it dwindles down.

Aroma has a touch of chocolate malt dark roastiness going on. Even a bit of banana and clove but a heavy nutty yeast note. A bit muted overall, not as expressive as most German counterparts.

Flavor packed full of toasted caramel malt, banana clover, a touch of raisin and green apple in the finish. Again the yeast has a dominant spicy nutty edge that I'm diggin'. Complex lower alcohol brew, gotta love Great Divide.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied carbonation is not as spritzy as the real deal but it still carries everything pretty well. Nothing cloying finishes easy without weighing the palate down in anyway, really non offensive.

Drinkability is solid a beer that they need to brew in six pack form so I can grab a couple more of these this coming spring. Good stuff.

I'm excited to see Great Divide branching out and doing some unexpected brews. This and the saison are some of the most recent ventures and both are worth a try.

Bottled 4/17/09.

Red foil wrapped bomber opens with a loud hiss and pours into a goblet. It has a nice redish brown color, clarity is fair, and the head is thick but short-lived.

Aroma is sweet and malty with a pleasant nutty fruit character to it.

Flavor is nicely balanced. Although it seems too sweet at first, the roasty malts and ample hopping even it out. There's a nice spicy flavor that is not uncommon in a Belgian. The wheat is big but the roasty carmel notes and even some chocolate come through.

Mouthfeel is smooth, almost creamy, with full body and light carbonation. It's very easy drinking even on the eve of a 90 degree day.

Although I don't have much experience with the style, I picked up an authentic German example (from the BA top 10) and had it earlier today. I don't know how true this is to the originals but it's a tasty beer in it's own right.

Healthy "zisss" upon prying the cap open, and the pour produces a head of light tan, foamy and firm, sitting on top of a bronzed brown sort of color, hazy from the swirled yeast second pour.

The aroma is a beautiful thing: banana, clove, sweet dark bread, and a hint of cocoa or carob. This could pass as a banana/chocolate pudding smell, I swear.

As with a regular hefe weizen, a pour/swirl/pour thing is the way to go here, too bad they don't remind us on the label. I almost forgot. This has subtlety and smoothness of flavor, but it's not a style that knocks you over the head or anything. Healthy clove and banana, although these aren't dominant, with a light nuttiness, grainy/bready character, Tootsie Roll and watered-down carob milkshake. An almost citrus-y springiness betrays the beer's American origins...

Not as silky or velvety as the real German deals, this has just a tad too much carbonation to perform alongside its better traits. Needs to be rounder, and silkier. More presence. More volume. Something.

A good stab at this style...although I've always thought Great Divide was one of those breweries, like Avery, Southern Tier or Flying Dog, that excels with the bigger 8%-plus type of brews.

A- Poured into a weizen glass. Pours a murky brown color with a nice off-white head with a good amount of lacing around the glass.

S- The aroma is very nice with some bready malt, wheat, a touch of caramel and bananas and clove.

T- The taste like the aroma is caramel malts and bready wheat malts. There is also some banana and clove flavors, almost like banana bread.

M- The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation.

D- Overall, this is another fantastic brew from Great Divide that is recommended!

Damned thing almost exploded as I popped the cap, then literally filled my snifter with the head after roughly an ounce of beer hit the glass. The beer is a medium brown, very rich looking, in color; but all you notice is the huge head of slightly offwhite bubbles. All different sizes, all popping at different times.

Nothing Earth-shattering about the nose, it's not bad, just nothing exceptional. Standard issue banana and clove, with what must be cinnamon giving it more depth. All the usual hefe suspects are kept in line with an aggressive malt bill.

I totally dig the taste. Very malty, but it's got that nice yeasty tang to it and the aforementioned spice (has to be cinnamon) to balance the twang and add a little sweetness.

Medium-bodied, feels thick and creamy as it dances on the tongue. Tangy and sweet, faintly spicy with some heat at the end, mostly from the carbonation.

An extremely easy drinker. No real faults, the lack of smell is a minimal issue in my book. The style hasn't always been high on my list of must haves, but this beer may enter my normal rotation of drinks.

Dunkel Weiss pours a dark copper color. It's mostly clear and penetrating light reveals nice cherry highlights. What's this? A Dunkelweizen with no haze? Huh? To be fair, it is sufficiently hazy on the second pour and triggers a score increase. A foamy, light beige heads tops it off and reaches over a finger deep. Retention was very short and lacing was on the light side of the spectrum.

As an initial note, the nose improves with some warming. Stick with it. Early on, it seems weak. Spices greet the nose first. Clove and pepper seem to be the most prominent. There's a banana aroma that complements the spices well. That aspect seems a little faint here. I'm hoping it's more pronounced in flavor. It should come as no surprise that it's grainy and earthy throughout. Yeast is noted and has a bread-like scent to it. Again, it improves with a little warmth, but needs more strength.

The flavor is pretty good. It's a little more impressive than the nose, but I'm not convinced that it's earned a bump in score. Spices waste no time here. A nice rush of pepper and clove strike first, though there's surely other ancillary spices I'm not picking up. There's a light banana presence in the flavor, but it's too light and doesn't provide quite the complementary effect I was hoping for. Nonetheless, it's here in some fashion. Grain, earthy notes, and yeast permeate throughout. It has a slight bready flavor. Spices seem to grow more aggressive on the finish. I like that aspect of it. Tastes like there's a little cinnamon in the mix and perhaps some spicy hops. No alcohol is noted. It finishes spicy and earthy. This is good stuff. I like it. I'd like it more with more banana.

It has a medium body. Carbonation is mid-range and isn't offensive. It's smooth, but not thick enough to reach the lush department. Warming does help. Drinkability is good. The flavor's pretty good, but could be a little better. It's easy drinking and is good enough to hold my attention for a while though.

Dunkel Weiss is a good Dunkelweizen that isn't quite good enough to compete with the world's finest. Nonetheless, it's a little better than you might expect from a Dunkelweizen hailing from Colorado. Having said that, it could be better. It would benefit from more strength on the nose and a stronger banana presence (in smell and in flavor). Nonetheless, I like it. It's grown on me more with each passing sip. A little warming helps a lot. The nose and the flavor seem to open up and its body feels more substantial. I kind of liked the first half of the bottle and I really liked the second half. Overall, it's good and I have no hesitation recommending it. Once again, I'm pleased with the direction Great Divide is taking. Keep rolling out good new beer, guys.

Pours a semi-effervescent caramel color with a thumb of fluffy tan head. Hazed a bit as the bottle drains, minimal head retention & lacing

S: Bubblegum & bananas

T: Caramel, brown sugar, apricot, green banana & dryness up front. Dryness & green bananas dominate as this warms along with more brown sugar sweetness, a little bit of clove & some roasted malt, dryness backs off once pretty warm. Finishes fruitty (bananas & figs) with more brown sugar

MF: Medium bodied, low carbonation, & some chewyness

Drinks a bit slow, the dryness & green bananas slow me down. Not a bad Dunkel, but there many better

22 oz bottle into a Weizen glass.

Pours a deep unfiltered coppery amber, with several huge fingers of dirty off-white head. All of that foam eventually shrinks down to a thin filmy look, that leaves just some light patchy lacing behind. The aroma is sticky in the nose with toasted wheat and a good bit of spicy close. I'm getting just a touch of banana here but those ripe fruit aromas I usually associate with the style are mostly subdued here in the nose.

The taste is thick with dark wheat character, with plenty of spice and some light earthy hops laying a strong zip on the tongue. Much like the aroma, I'm getting just a smidge of those fruity esters from the yeast. Strong dry finish on this. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a prickly feel up front that then descends into a much flatter and chewy texture towards the back of the swallow. That 6% seems about right for the feel. There's some heft here but it doesn't seem to hinder the overall presence.

This wasn't horrible or anything but some more depth of fruit character definitely would have been welcome here in the profile, as this mostly came off as a bit 2-note. This was just OK though and is ultimately not one of Great Divides better offerings.

Had a bottle in the fridge for about a month... and am finally trying it... this is the second Dunkle next to Hacker-Pschorr ontap that I have tried.. here is the review..

- Wonderful rich dark copper.. leans towards molasses.. minimal to no head... and light lacing.. ever so slightly cloudy.. lot's of good live yeast in the bottle for conditioning.

- Rather strong wood aged scent... very oakey.. and grain-like... does smell of the style very much so... slight bittering and sweetness..

- Robust wheat, sweet and creamy.. almost a strong cake.. carrot cake minus the tartness... this Dunkle could go stronger if desired... complex and actually quite good.

- Bit dry and chewy, sweet and strong.

- Great tasting.. if you like strong wheats.. a good one for you! Tastes stronger than the 6.4% it states though... but rich, complex, balanced.. and a great American interpretation of the style.

Long day today. Nice long session at Barleys followed by a big tasting back at the house,. What more
could anyone ask for? Consumed on 07/05/2010.

Now this was a damn good beer. I was thrilled to see it up on the board and ordered it straight away.
Dark as could be it comes to my table looking like melted milk chocolate. Nice firm head of maybe
three inches caps the top and settles down quickly into a smooth and even layer.

Aroma is big, deep chocolate, rich roasted malts, enormous brown sugar and caramel notes, this one was
a beast to say the least. Really carried over and expanded into the flavor. Rich chocolate, roasted
nuts, molasses, hints of earthy, dry notes. Really just very full and deep. Rich, creamy feel and a
session ability that was top notch.

Overall this was about as solid as it gets. A tremendously good beer that I would love to be able to
try again.

12 oz bottle pours a somewhat clear (for the style) light amber color with a large tan foam typical of wheat beers. Retention is good and the lacing is terrific. Good looking dunkel, albeit a bit light in color.

Smell is a bit different than most of the style. Surprisingly grainy without a ton of banana and clove. Yeast is more biscuity and doughy with quite a bit of pecan nuttiness. Smells good, just different.

Chocolate, cloves and a bit of banana come through in the taste with a bit more rounded feel as some other light fruits come into play; pears and apples perhaps? This one has some characteristics more akin to a dunkel lager than a dunkelweiss...strong nutty presence, honey malt sweetness and some grassy hops. Mouthfeel is good, as it has a nice creaminess to it but seems to fall a bit short of some of the best German D-weiss'. Still a good American rendition of the style and I would surely buy a sixer of this if it was available around here.

Pours a brown color with an orange hue. Full bubbly tan head that falls to a thin one. Full, thin lace.

Nice wheat aroma with a bit of bready yeast. Bit of clove and sweetness.

Nice wheat taste with a dark malt backbone. Somewhat sweet and spicy with a slight banana flavor in the finish.

Medium bodied with relatively low carbonation and a slight bite on the tongue.

I like it. I can see drinking more of this.
