Thanks to axilla for sharing the growler...and roan for the second opportunity...
Appears a semi transparent light orange with a small white cap that slowly fades out. Spotty lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of hoppy citrus, apricot, grapefruit, and apple.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with the spicey citrus, bitter, yeasty, graininess coming through.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, grainy, bitter, fruity, and zesty.

On tap at Dock Street on 6/18/08.

A - Burnt amber/copper-colored body with thin, off-white head that receded into ample lacing around the glass. Slightly hazy body with mild amount of carbonation present.

S - Very nice fresh hop aroma with a combination of zesty citrus hops and strong grassy hops and a bit of pine thrown in for good measure. Quite a nice hop bouquet. Malt has a slight burnt quality with a nice amount of rye in the nose, but not overbearing.

T - Lots of flavors mingle together in this brew! There's plenty of hop bite that blends citrus, pine and grassy notes with a nice grainy malt aspect and pleasant rye presence. Ultimately, the hops win out in the end and provide ample bitterness, yet the brew remains very well-balanced.

M - Medium body with fairly lively carbonation. The moderately bitter finish lingers for a little while on the palate.

D - Man, this is a tasty IPA that is extremely fresh and flavorful! Very pleased with this one, not only for its well-balanced flavor and intoxicating aroma, but also its drinkability. Nice job, Dock Street!

Served in a nonic pint glass. Glass of cold water on the side to sip from periodically.

Appearance: As served the beer is clear dark golden/orange color with a ½" white head that persists quite well and leaves nice thick lacing patterns in rings and sheets. Though out most of the beer there are speckles and patches of lacing clinging to the sides of the glass.

Smell: The aroma has a nice floral citric character with some traces of rye bread mingling in with malt and the hops.

Taste: The flavors are crisp and fresh with some floral citrus and some pine showing. The sweetness from the malt backbone blends in nicely to balance but never overwhelm the hops. The rye malt has its influence with a noticeable "rye bread" contribution to the flavors of the malt.

Mouthfeel: The mouth feel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation. The finish is relatively long and the hop bitterness accompanied by dryness persists to the end.

Drinkability: I thoroughly enjoyed this beer. Sipping led to more sipping and I was ready to order another when it was finished. I will revisit this one again next time I have the chance. It would be easy to drink a few of these.

Had this on tap tonight at Farmacia in Old City.

Pours a deep dark amber/chestnut brown color that is completely opaque with slight golden amber edges when held to a light source and a two finger frothy off-white head with excellent retention. The head on this beer barely settled throughout the whole pint and it coated the glass with sheets of soapy lacing. Very impressive looking.

Slightly earthy hop aroma with lots of floral and citrus notes balanced by a sweet caramel malt presence and a strong rye character. Hints of lemon peel and grapefruit and subtle earthy pine along with a prominent sweet malt character in the nose.

Slightly chewy medium body that is on the fuller end of the spectrum. Pretty hop forward with a decent amount of dry earthy piny hops, subtle citrus peel presence, sweet caramel malt and prominent rye flavor. This beer is excellently balanced and although the malt backbone and rye are prominent they don't overpower the hops, allowing the sweet citrus and dry pine notes to shine through. The sweetness from the caramel malt and rye actually enhance these flavors and the balance makes this beer very quaffable. was pleasantly surprised by this one. Highly recommended if fresh.

Not a bad IPA by any means, but the rye should have given it just a bit more bite. Overall, the general impression was a bit darker than ususal mid-range IPA. The level of hopping was nicely done and did not overwhelm the malt - but I was looking for just a bit more distinction. Enjoyable but not particulary memorable.

$1.83 @ Cherry Hill Liquor, Wine & Beer (Wegmans), Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Nice label with a sailor riding atop a shark. 6.8% abv and 64 IBUS. 20% rye. Sounds good. Ahh, and it looks good too. It's poured a slightly hazy deep copper/chestnut brown colored body beneath a finger-thick head of densely creamy off-white foam. Very nice. The aroma displays caramelish malt with a hint of spiciness from the rye. I'm not sure here the hops are. The neck label states that it's "... brewed with columbus, simcoe and amarillo hops." but I'm not finding them. That's OK, if the hops were there you wouldn't be able to smell the rye so it's a fair trade-off. On to the flavor... more caramel and rye, and some hops. I get the orange-like character of the Amarillo lingering in the dry finish along with a swirl of spiciness. It's a bit piney and herbal as well. 64 IBUs? Yeah, that seems right, it's a solid bitterness but there's a lot of malt there that it's got to balance as well, and of course the spiciness of the rye helps. Looking back there's a thin but almost solid sheet of lace covering the glass from where I began to where I'm at now, which is about a third of the glass. Not bad, points for that. What have I missed? Mouthfeel. Medium bodied and crisp. Not too crisp, but more than just gently crisp. Probably a pretty standard 2.5 to 2.6 volumes of CO2. It's nice, I like it. The rye gives it a lot of character, and the citrusy hops are refreshing against it. Well done all around and worth trying to be sure.

Appearance: pours a orange color with a 2" head that lasts a while. Thick lacing develops during the session.

Smell: citrus, grass, and floral bitterness are up front while some fruit sweetness is hidden in the background.

Taste: the rye really come through here. Caramel, citrus, some soft pine, loads of floral bitterness, and some fruit sweetness make up a different than normal IPA. There seems to be a bit of spiciness that shows up at the finish here too.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied. Crisp from start to finish. Aftertaste is long as the bitterness lasts a while.

Drinkability: this is an interesting IPA that takes you away from the norm today. Easy to consume and very flavorful, so you will not grow tired of this at all.

Dock Street- Rye IPA

A- Deep golden copper orange with a thick foamy head Big ringed lacing.
S- Heavy caramel malt, oily pine hops and rye.
T- Heavy rye, molasses, caramel malt, black licorice, and thick earthy hops.
M- Huge bitter hops ur front with a very creamy buttery malt finish.

Overall- Quite tasty. The bitterness is a bit overpowering but the creamy malt makes up for it.

It pours a slightly hazy and bouncily carbonated golden orange. A thick finger of light beige head lays puffy and fluffy for a short while. A wide net of lacing ensnares the inside of the glass.

The aroma is a pungent mélange of sweet and fruity malt, earthy deli rye, resinous pinecones, and crisp, ripe grapefruit. A bready hint meshes nicely with a warm alcohol breeze.

Upon sipping, and of course savoring, the hops erupt, with sticky pine and poignantly crisp grapefruit asserting a dry bitterness that finds its crafty way to allow caramel malt, berry fruitiness, and a swelling of earth, dusky rye. The alcohol is present, but incorporated with a deft twist. Residual grain conjures a mild sweetness and a loaf of rye, minus the carraway seeds. The finish is in the forever range, with a slowly ebbing dry bitterness that loses volume but never its crispness. This beer has an amazing flavor, no question.

Medium bodied, it has a mouth-filling, creamy presence on the palate that is at once sticky and oily and peppery. Not to mention that eternal glow.

Wa-wa-wee-wa! To call this beer a revelation would be an understatement, but that's what I'm calling it anyway. I order it assuming I would like it, and I end up loving the sweet earthy bastard. This is an IPA that grabs you by the ears and shakes you, then gives you a big wet kiss for the effort. ABV be damned, it goes down smooth and makes you want more and more. Such a blending of complexity is a tribute to Scott. I, for one, would like to thank him for this elixir. And I know I'm not the only one.

I have visited Dock Street Brewery & Restaurant in west Philadelphia on numerous occasions and I have taken away some of their large format bottles, but it was only recently when The Friendly Greek Bottle Shop here in Lancaster put some of their 12-fl. oz. bottles out as singles that they registered on my radar.

Another bottle, another Pop!, another day at Chez Woody, Rye-t? Wrong! My Achilles heel is rye, which is why I have numerous bottles of rye whisky here and very few of any other distilled spirit. I am VERY anxious to get this one going. A heavy-handed pour netted two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with good retention. Color was Dark Brown to Very Dark Brown (SRM = > 27, < 34) with NE-quality clarity and Deep Amber highlights. Nose smelled of black pepper and spearmint/peppermint and man, was my mouth watering! Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was spectacular with a full-frontal assault of black pepper and an unidentifiable mintiness on the tongue and in the mouth, filling my sinus cavity & making me yearn for the next wave to hot the beachhead. Finish was dry, cool, dry and minty. I felt like I had just brushed my teeth and used fluoride rinse since it was so minty and clean. Swoon!

This is one of Scott Morrison's beers, and I am convinced he is the best local brewer around me [Philly}. This IPA is a gold color, with perfect foam and excellent rings of lace [which incidently, Rosemarie herself noticed and stopped to comment on, actually picked up the pint glass and went around showing her staff!].

the beer smells of bread and piney/resiney/perfumey hops. This beer is made with amarillo and simcoe hops, and 15% rye. It tastes incredible...this is the best local made IPA, ever....to me its better than weyerbacher double simcoe and dogfish head 60 minute IPA. Why? its the rye...it gives it a luscious dry, spicy character that I simply adore in an IPA....Boy am I lucky I only live 15-20 minutes away!

16 oz draft @ jet rock terminal b Philly airport. Chill hazes amber in appearance with a smallish near white head.
Aroma of big grapefruit and sourdough pretzels.
Spicy and floral hoppy up front. Loving this rye bread heftiness. Quite the resiny hop flavor. Fragrantly bitter...lots of pine and grapefruit rind.
Huge hoppy bitter spicy mouthfeel with great drinkability.

This was a pleasant surprise. I don't know why I expected so little, but my expectations were confounded. I didn't get a lot of Rye out of it, and it was a huge Simcoe hop bomb, but it was tasty nonetheless.

Pours hazy, opaque copper with sticky head. Aroma is fresh and hoppy, thick with simcoe hops. Flavor is carmelly and sweet, citrusy, heavy with what seem to be simcoe hops. Mouthfeel is viscous and clingy.

Had this on tap at the Manayunk Tavern.
A: Served a clear amber color with a pillowy white head capped on top. Light bubbles rising.

S: A fresh citric and spice combination going on from the generous hops and the rye. Some tropical fruit and orange peel aromas coming through too. Then a humble but present malt backbone has faint toffee and bready notes with a nice toastedness from the roasted malt.

T: Fresh hops come first which are citric and slightly herbal with some tropical fruit flavors. Not over the top but good bitterness. Some spicis noticeable from the rye and hops possibly. Malt is solid enough to balance the hops and slightly sweet hints of toffee and fresh bread. finish is to the bitter

M: Smooth low carbonation with a medium body and just a bit of noticeable alcohol warmth.

D: This was my favorite beer of the night it was so balanced and fresh tasting that my tastebuds were pleased with each sip. One of the best beers I have had from Dock Street. Get it when in Philly!

App: Pours from a fresh growler as a light golden orange with a massive meringue and off-white head. Settles into a solid cap with high lacing. Slightly cloudy complexion.
Aroma: Pineapple, fruit aroma up front. Beautiful Simco fruit and slight pine smell blends with mild sweet malt backbone. Good pear and apple along with nice pineapple.
Taste: Really nice flavor both cold and as it warms up. Light apple-pear sweetness up front followed by hoppy-malt sweet flavor and fruit esters. Pineapple, pine, floral, honey follows. Refreshing.
Mouthfeel: Nice body - fluid but light to medium bodied. Very nice soft delicate but potent carbonation. Nice balance of sweet and dry.
Drink: Yes, very good. Incredibly refreshing, crisp, and slightly dry.

16oz pour at Jet Rocks in the Philly airport. Chilled pint...damn, forgot where I was otherwise I would have specified.

A nice hazy orange brown with thin stark white head. Nose is a bit closed due to the cold temp. A little floral perhaps. Palate has a nice flavor profile, tastes like rye bread, bitter grapefruit rind and a little something like wood or mulch, an earthiness.

Nice, would have again.

A- pours a nice dark amber with a little white head
S- Hops, rye, some sugar, maybe cascade... a little ammarilo maybe..
T- The hops comes out first, then the rye very crisp. A nice bite, its really hard to taste the alcohol
M- really smooth, goes down way to easy for a beer at 7 percent...
D- I really wish/ hope the bottle this beer, very easy and inviting to drink but has enough character to make it stick out

A-Deep copper with a thin tan head that left behind nice lacing.

S-LIght earthy hips with a bit of toasted malt.

T-Sharp, biting peppery/pin hops with a nice supporting caramel malt backbone.

M-medium body with a good sharp crispness and lasting bitterness.

D-Good stuff. The 20% rye bill really gives it a sharp crispness and pleasant drying feel. Nice job in using ingredients to compliment each other.

This is the first Dock Street that I have had on tap since the days of Jeffery Ware. DR had it on tap for their hopfest.

This beer poured a cloudy golden color with light carbonation and a decent foamy head, about a quarter inch of the head held during my tasting.

The bouquet was full of strong, sweet hops with a slight malt, gains and yeast. This translates nicely to the taste as it has a sweet ascerbic bite that is big and tasty. The hops and rye really balance each other nicely, creating an enjoyable backtaste.

Mouthfeel is kinda big, but well balanced. Drinkability is good, but again, this is a big feeling beer. A nice tasty that you can have one or two of.

A very tasty rye IPA from Dock Street.

Pours a clear deep amber with a nice white head and very good lacing.

Smell has a very strong presence of hops with grainy rye malt in the background.

Taste has a more moderate hoppiness than I expected from the nose. A very well balanced flavor with a good malt backbone.

Mouthfeel is crisp with a nice carbonation.

I would be happy to drink another of these.

On-tap at the Brewpub, served in a bowtie glass

Appears a golden orange/copper color with a creamy one finger+ yellow infused cap. The head never fully disappeared and left some clingy lace along the sides.

Resiny, oily hops with sharp, spicy rye in an almost dead even split. Some caramel on the back end, but pine and grapefruit and spicy rye dominate.

Nice pine resin and grapefruit burst onto the palate followed quickly by caramel and spicy, dry rye. The finish is fruity, dry and crisp. A real nice balance was achieved between the malt and the rye to let the hops shine at just the right moments. This is one of the better rye ipa's I have had.

Smooth, creamy medium body with perfect combination. This is a nice relaxing sipper at 7%. Should have picked up a growler of this guy as it was very enjoyable.
