Dock Street Summer Session….on tap at the brewery in Philadelphia

Appearance-bright orange to dark yellow color, very large white head that puffed up its chest and rose but then fell sharply back into the glass.

Smell-spicy aroma of wheat and bread mixed with spice and the lawnmower grass, alcohol as well.

Taste/Mouthfeel-right away you are hit with a spicy flavor of yeast mixed with grain and fruit, the taste is powerful and somewhat muddled, doesn’t really run together. The aforementioned ginger flavor is something I would normally enjoy but it further muddles the flavor and makes it jumbled and not all that enjoyable. Spice is also overwhelming for how thin the beer is.

Drinkability-not that refreshing, jumbled.

Overall-I respect the brewery for trying something different than the normal “summer” beer but this one just didn’t hit the mark and was my least favorite of the ones I tried there. I would avoid.

Review from notes on 6/5/10

Light straw color, hazy with a quickly dissipating head.Lightly twangy, touch of citrus and lemon. Quite bland actually. Not offending but really not much to speak about. Touch of grain and wheaty flavor. Tiny citrus finish. Light and crisp, bubbly carbonation. Decently drinkable. Altogether a pretty run of the mill bland APWA.

Appears a hazy light gold with a tiny white cap that quickly fades into a small collar. Mild bits of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of wheat, cut Ginger, and lemon zest...not much more comes to mind.
Taste is of the aromas with bitterness of citus, and Ginger.
Mouthfeel is mdium bodied, spicy, zingy, with herbal bitterness lingering.

Pours a hazy light golden orange color with a puffy off white head leaving good lacing. Smell is of ginger, lemon oil, cut grass and biscuits. Taste is a quick sharp punch of ginger followed up with the mellow notes of hay and fresh biscuits with some yeastyness. Great smooth medium body with nice bubbly carbonation. A very nice beer.

Cask at the Philly Beer Scene magazine launch party:

Flat, even for cask. It had just been tapped, but it poured without a head. Cloudy orange-gold body, thin ring of white as a head. That could have been due to a dirty glass.

The aroma was yeasty and wheaty, but it also seemed very "green" or young. That carried over into the flavor. It was grassy, but I'm not sure if that was due to the hops because what I found in that arena were pine, fruit, and citrus notes.

My guess is that this was a last-minute firkin and it didn't have time to mature properly. Or, perhaps Dock Street was very busy this month and they'd just pushed green beer through at the restaurant too (?).

Beyond that it was a pretty decent American wheat, although a bit more yeasty than it probably should have been, although that also might have been just the firkin. The wheat malt was firm, and the bitterness backed it solidly. The hops had to compete with the yeast, but they still got through. I'll have to head over there and try this on tap... might just have been a poorly done cask.

Not sure if this beer should be classified as an american wheat or a witbier; I went with the former.

Summer Session is a light yellowish gold color, a bit hazy, small to no head after a few minutes. Nice fresh taste, appropriate carbonation. It is a wheat beer brewed with fresh ginger..[and for once somebody brewed a wheat beer with some serious flavor, which is not overpowering banana, berry or citrus fruit note, I appreciate this]. It goes down so easy...its made for those awful humid summer days we tend to get in urban Philly.

The subtle yet pungent ginger flavor cuts in the middle of your sip...and immediately grabs your palate's attention, and quenches your thirst. It finishes clean, the best part..and it just feels healthy to imbibe. Ginger aids stomach digestion naturally, after all. It is so nice to see some additional locally brewed session beers on the scene..I think Summer Session could become a Philly classic seasonal.

There are no off tastes and its not too boozy. If it was it would ruin the beer. Its name is a little generic for the oomph factor of the flavor, but I guess it accurately describes the point of this well brewed beer.
