And a happy new year to you, too. See, you go out to PA to toast one final Victory for Heavyweight, and a little din down in Philly happens. Hard to keep tabs on all the newings open especially beyond my local reach. Hmmn, where to go? Well, with Scotty playing Dock Street, this seemed like a good idea. Mind you, the 'hood's a little dodgy, but I'm not moving in, I'm just here for the beer, so...

Old firehouse of badassness. It's a wide open room with a backwards question mark shaped bar to the rear. Seating for 10 on the straight part with views of the brewroom behind large glass windows, growlers and shelved glassware below on the barback. A break and then seating for another 10 on and around the bend forward a tile front pizza oven in the prep/open kitchen area. A dozen and a half low and raised bar tables out over the floor, and a few couches just inside the front door vestibule. Large arch windows up front where the firehouse doors used to be. Lime green painted walls over brick lowers, framed pics at one end, and a large board listing tap selections, dates, OG's, descriptions, ABV's and status. Down on the other end, a large reverse logo blackboard on the kitchen prep overhang lists taps and available bottles, being the Amber & Illuminator (Did I tell you, did you know? Way back way back when, the Dock Street Amber was my first micro love, it's true). 2 large pillars plastered with Dock Street labels, exposed duct and piping above, and fabric sashes. Drop cone lamps over the bar, track spots and mounted lamps elsewhere.

2 towers of 6 each along different points of the bar. 6 beers available and all on the sampler. The Cranberry Kolsch, 4.5%, had a slight tartness, and was good easy drinking, nice; the Gold Stock Ale, 5.4%, a pleasant enough pale ale; the Winter Warmer, 7.6%, some ginger and vanilla, interesting; the Rye IPA, 6%, nicely balanced, good rye flavor; the Imperial Oatmeal Stout, 8.9%, my kind of licorice, oaty, mmmm; and the Barleywine, 10.5%, fruity, got some caramel, still a bit young. I liked the Cranberry Kolsch and Imperial Oatmeal Stout the most.

And a small food menu. Cold sandwiches, panini, salads, calzones, and a bunch of pizza options. I did the individual pepperoni pizza (it was good but I should have gotten it very well done), and fries (they needed time yet). Overall, the food was pretty good.

Would like to get back down here in the soon. Would've already if the small strange man knew how to pick up the phone...

My wife and I arrived with our two little ones around 5:00. We were unsure if it was seat yourself or wait to be seated, so we stood for a couple of minutes and then grabbed one of two open and dirty tables. After finding the only two high chairs ourselves, situating the kids, sitting for several minutes did the hostess saunter by. I had to flag her down and ask her to clear the last party's empties. After a while the waitress came over and delivered menus. We ordered two pizzas and fish and chips along with beers and milk for the tots.

By this time the loud, unpleasant industrial techno music became very wearing. The place has awful acoustics and the music selection was totally inappropriate for the clientele. There were several groups with seniors who looked unhappy.

Shortly after our arrival four other groups with young children came in. We had the only two high chairs. We bribed our daughter to give up her high chair for another appreciative parent.

Food came, pizzas were very good. My wife's fish and chips was coated with uncooked batter, large gooey clumps of it. We sent it back and figured we had enough pizza for all.

The beers were well done. We had the Pilsner, the Gold Stock Ale, the Rye IPA and the St. Albans.

We asked for the check when the desert was delivered. Tira misu, also pretty good. The check came about 25 minutes later, because the waitress had to wait for the useless hostess to remove the fish and chips from the bill. I actually took the kids outside for a walk because they were starting to get fidgety.

While my wife was waiting for the check she noticed another party waiting for a table. There was one available, but it was too full of the last person's dishes and empties to sit at.

Overall, it gave the impression of a very poorly managed establishment. I will not return unless I hear that it gets better.

Stopped in for happy hour plus on a Thursday night.

A: We arrived around 5:30pm to a fairly empty room. A few people seated at the bar but that was it. The room itself is deceptively smaller than I would have thought from the outside and is fairly industrial in appearance. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion by could be lacking "warmth". The crowd stated to pick up as we were leaving around 8:30 and you could start to notice the rise in decibel so something could be done to soften the noise perhaps.

S: We took a seat at the bar closest to the entrance. Our bartender was attentive, took our orders, kept our glasses filled and was more than up on the beer scene as we had a good discussion re: Bell's Hopslam.

Selection / Quality: An excellent variety of brews. I enjoyed a Gold Stock, Rye IPA, and an Imperial Oatmeal Stout, also sampled my friends Bo Pils and all were very good.

F: I ordered the Ham & Gruyere pannini with fries and found it to be a delicious sandwich. Many tempting menu options, especially pizzas, will take me back for another visit.

V: My sandwich, and 3 beers was $20. To me that's a good deal in the city.

I haven't reviewed in some time but felt this place rightfully deserved a few choice words. I have heard about the 'new' Dock Street for several months and finally decided to check it out after an evening at the Art Museum.

The area has improved markedly since I was a med student in the late 90's at Penn. I rarely went past 45st back then but now things are safer probably up to the low 50's. Amazing....

Our party of three arrived around 9:30 on a Friday night and the place was absolutely packed with a least 10 people waiting for tables. As already described, the place is a converted fire station that has maintained the concrete floors and high ceiling. A nice touch IMO. The customers are a mix of students (from Penn/Drexel given the close proximity) and a decent amount of older folks, a category I'm slowly approaching. It was loud but I don't think too bad (TND in Wayne is much louder). Our wait was only about 20 mins.

Service was fantastic despite the packed tables and bar. All three of us ordered individual pizzas which did take a while to come and were a bit burnt at the crust. However, we all agreed they were very tasty and scrumptous. Beers that we tried included the Rye IPA with a lingering bitterness on the tongue, Winter Warmer with a hint of ginger (not to my taste but well done nevertheless), Gold Stock (a definite killer session pale ale), and the malty smooth Imperial Oatmeal Stoute (wow is all I can say!). I was impressed with the quality of the brews...nothing was off or something I wouldn't drink again.

I will definitely hit this place again and remember to bring my growler ($12 for a fill). I think this place will do very well and is located in a patch of space that has no competition.

being as how it is so close to home, this is my go-to bar. it opened this past summer and they still need to work on a few things, especially the atmosphere. being that it is in an old concrete warehouse, it is very "noisy" inside. the acoustics are very bad. they have done some things to remedy this situation but on a busy weekend night it's especially drowning. my other gripe with the atmosphere is the lay-out of the tables in the dining room. it's a fairly small space but the tables are aligned in such a way that it is virtually impossible to move around.

the beer is fabulous, and diverse, from a light Kolsch to the heaviest of imperial stouts and barleywines. right now they have the RyeIPA, the Imperial Oatmeal Stout and the Barleywine all on tap. all are excellent. the Gold Stock is a pretty decent session beer as well.

I've only really sat at the bar and the service has always been great. some of the bartenders know more about beer than others, but the ones that do really know their stuff. I appreciate that.

the pizza is great, although it doesn't hold up too well for leftovers as the crust is a bit thin.

it's definetely a welcome addition to the neighborhood and I wish them the best success.

I finally made it to the new Dock St. I went mainly for the rye IPA, which was incredible! The place ain't much to look at but I used to live in the area and I wouldn't expect much. The way the tables are laid out behind the bar is annoying, trying to walk around them/between them to the bathrooms is like weaving through a labyrinth. The bathrooms were clean. I went to high school with one of the bartenders, and it was fun to sort of 'catch up.' The corner upon which Dock St. is located has definitely changed since I lived around here. It's much quieter, and there's no kids 'hanging around' outside. Feels somewhat 'safer' than it used to.

If you live in the neighborhood and especially if you're a grad student or otherwise 20-something West Philly alterna-type, this is a fine place to hang out. If you don't fit that description but you live in the neighborhood it's still probably a good option for you on a weeknight or in off-peak times. Since I don't fit either of these categories, I can say that I probably won't come back.

I went with a group of friends the night before Thanksgiving, so it was a weekend-type crowd. As noted the place is LOUD. This is a former fire station, you're sitting on the concrete pad that the fire trucks used to sit on, and there was no effort made to soften any of the surfaces - just all hard reflective bare bones materials, the din made talking to anyone other than those right next to you difficult, and that's without loud music or a decent sound system. It was also crowded and hard to walk around, the servers kept bumping into us, sometimes hard. Ok for a college, post-college night out, but not at all the place for families or couples (again at least when it's busy).

Our server was nice enough but we had to ask for almost everything more than once, when we could get attention at all. I don't know how much was the server and how much was being understaffed for the crowd, so I don't want to point any fingers.

My friends were drinking the oatmeal stout and the kolsch when I arrived, but we were told the oatmeal stout kicked, to everyone's disappointment. I thought that later on I saw people getting it in their samplers, but we were never told there was a new keg or anything. Regardless this brought the number of drafts down to I think four - kolsch, helles, rye IPA, and the gold. I could be wrong, though, and the web site doesn't help because it's outdated. To have so few beers and to have two of them be a kolsch and a helles - in late fall - with no session ales, was strange. I sipped the stout and the kolsch, both were nice enough, the kolsch was very light with a bit of fruit, the stout finished a little ashy. Eventually everyone got their food after various ordering misadventures, the pizza was kind of nice but two of the three we ordered had too much cheese and lacked balance, I like thin crust pizzas but these got soggy on the bottom and hard to eat. My pizza had black olives, two of which still had the pits in them, which was an irritating surprise.

Shortly before the food arrived my friend and I ordered a pitcher of the rye IPA and HATED it. The reviews have generally been good here and I know the brewer is very respected, although I don't know whether these were his batches again or not, so I'm at a loss...we just didn't like it at all, the beer was completely and lastingly bitter with no spice or fruit character and couldn't make out the malt body, although another friend sipped it and tasted some fruit at the front before the bitterness kicked in - he said it tasted like a grapefruit wine. The table then went back to more pitchers of the kolsch, although my palate had been seemingly wrecked by the IPA. Where before it was light and harmless enough, if not that interesting, now I found this undrinkable too. We ended up not finishing the last pitcher.

Only the couple that lived a couple blocks away seemed interested in coming back. We were at least all happy that the tab was surprisingly low, although we agreed that we got so little attention from our server that we probably could've dined and dashed and no one would even remember. There were a fair amount of people bringing growlers home with them, and it was packed, so it is clearly filling a niche, but I have no need to go out of my way to go back like I do with Standard Tap or Gray Lodge. Perhaps if there's more investment in the space and staff I would re-consider.

First time at the new Dock Street. This is a "developing" part of West Philly so the neighborhood is on the edge of shady but U Penn is spreading like the bird flu so this may be the new Northern Liberties in a few years. Inside was basic with a few artsy flashes. It was very busy on this Tuesday night & my bartender was very good. She took the time to walk a non-beer geek/hippy girl through some samples to find something she would like. My only complaint is that they only had five beers on plus the contact brewed bottles. I really enjoyed the Helles lager. The pizza was excellent and my check was reasonable.

Recommended. Cheers.

Let's start with the beer. I was unfortunate to have missed the beers that Scott Morrison brewed before Julius Hummer took over. I WAS expecting something good however, as Hummer had such a good resume. The beers I tasted were far from spectacular, and were both incompletely attenuated, thus tasting a little like homebrew. That to me, is a very clear sign that the brewer doesn't know what he's doing. Thankfully Hummer got the boot less than two months on the job (a little too much taste testing there???) and Scott has returned. THAT will be the only reason that I'll go back, although I can say that the pizza is excellent. And seeing Jeff making pies behind the counter was great! (Rosemarie was there too, as was Mike Fava, the assistant brewer).

But pizza alone is not enough to drag me into that part of west Philly. And let's cover that now. No, the area's not great, but it's not too bad. Chinese take-outs are the best indicator. Do they have bullet-proof glass protecting them from the customers? Well, the one right down the street headed towards the city does, but that could just be a vestige left over from a worse time some years ago. Right in the area it's not too bad. Stick close though. Don't head any further west (and certainly not north of that) after dark.

So let's see... we should have great beers on (Mr. Morrison has never let me down), and the pizza rocks. But what about the rest of the premesis? Well, the outside of the building is beautiful, there's no denying that. And inside it's kind of cozy, but at the same time kind of not. It's small, but it feels loud and cold. And perhaps more tight than cozy. And the used furniture by the doorway doesn't exactly endear me, but it does fit the neighborhood. Hell, for all I know they might have taken it right off the curb at the end of last year over by Penn. The bar area looks as if it might have been a pizza counter in a past life. It's nice looking, but it's not really as warm or comfortable as a wood topped bar would have been in my opinion. The support beam covered with old labels and stickers, however, is just tacky.

I'm going to head back over to grab some of Scott's beers and a pie. I'll update if there's been any change.

YES!!! What a difference a beer makes. The pizza remains the same beautiful thing that it is, and now the beer is great too! After 4 visits I can say without question that Dock Street has won me over.

The most important aspect of a brewpub is, of course, the beer. Our group started with samplers. At $6, the sampler was reasonable. Nice selection of ales (gold, white, red) and seasonals (dark cherry, pumpkin) and a good IPA. All were solid offerings.

The establishment itself is very bohemian. The menu was called the "introductory menu" and was rather limited. Of the four of us there, all of us agreed that the food was pretty average at best.

My biggest complaint was the growler situation. We wanted to share the beer with friends at a party the next day. When we were told that two growlers would be $60, we were a bit shocked. They were charging a steep deposit price on the growlers. The cost to refill is pretty standard, but I'm certainly not accustomed to such a high initial bottle charge (~$16 if memory serves). But like I said, the beer was good enough to want a growler, so I guess we'll try to spread the cost of that growler out over a few additional visits.

The new Dock Street brewpub opened at the end of August. I am not sure what was in that location previously but I am guessing a firehouse.

The location is in West Philly right at Baltimore Ave. The area is seeing an influx of Penn faculty. So this small part of West Philly is doing its best to revitalize. It was easy to get to and it stands out. You can't miss the place. Let me just state for all of my suburban BAs: It is safe for Philly standards. I saw a police presense that afternoon. Its not ghetto despite rough areas not being too far away..

I was there on an autumn-like Saturday afternoon with my girlfriend. Upon entering you see a pile of firewood and a brick oven. There are also sofas near the entrance way. These gave a sort of sterile environment a warmer feel. On this brisk day the pizza oven seemed like a fireplace. The bar was rather long but nondescript. The the rest of the seating was reminicient of a cafeteria. That is not a bad thing. It was just minimalist. There was plenty of sunlight coming through. I find this a big plus over damn artificial lighting. Oh and there is some outdoor seating. Once you are in the bathrooms are straight back along the left wall.

I have been to all of Philly's brewpubs. Nodding Head was the reigning champ. Well the champ has been dethroned. I never enjoyed every beer on a brew pub's menu before. The selection was great. There was an imperial stout (hints of licorice & strong molasses), white ale, dark cherry ale (strong chocolate character), left coast ipa, golden ale (best example of this style that I have found to date), rye ipa (15% rye grain). The weakest was the White but that's just because I am not a big fan. However, my partner in crime gave it glowing reviews. It was nice to see it garnished with an orange instead of a lemon (a common mistake).

I fell in love with both of the IPAs. The Left Coast is extraordinary and made such an impression that I ran to the boot of my car to grab my growler. Yes they do growlers for around $13. The price of a pint is $4. Happy Hours during Monday - Friday (I think 4 - 7 PM) puts pints to just $3!!! BTW - this place is opened from 4 - Midnight.

The servers were great gals. I forget our bartenders name but she never let our glasses go dry. Food did not take long. Very good service over all.

The menu is mostly pizza. However, there is a huge varity of pizza. There is even a vegan one in addition to vegetarian options. The crust was superior to any thing from a Bertucci's, Carrarbas' or any of that ilk. It was thin and in the European tradition of pizza...not overly sauced or cheesed. Plus it did not taste like a cardboard box like too many Philly pizza places do.

I think the menu is the perfect size. Aim small - Miss small!!! They even have real Italian espresso means for their manual espresso machine (not automatic like all of Starbucks stores). I sall Fish and Chips, Paninis, tiramisu and cheesecake...oh and a bangin' selection of salads that included a goat cheese with walnut. I am always thrilled when I can get salads that do not have any of that shit Iceberg lettuce. I HATE ICEBERG LETTUCE. They have a few bottles of wine if you are a loser who doesn't enjoy beer.

My Beer Advocate heart warmed at the sight of your non-typical brewpub goers kicking back with a few pints. It was great to see locals actually enjoying some thing that hey have never had. The rest of the patrons looked like me but had strollers and a few more years on them. :-) Then there was the couple seated immediately to my right. They were new to craft beer. I shared my $0.02 in an attempt to help them pick a beer.

Oh and I love how the staff's iPod Nano (lets just say "eccletic") was being played via an old school ghetto blaster!
