You might not find this place right away. If you're coming down Poole Rd (towards Bournemouth), just after you pass the Cambridge Rd. roundabout, you'll see a small cathedral on the left and a solicitors' office with a silly name (Horsey Lightly & Fynn or something like that) on the right. This is where you need to veer to the right onto W. Hill Rd. The pubs is about 50 yards down on the left.

Inside you'll find three rooms on slightly different levels. There's a billiards table and lots of seating. Also a cozy outdoor courtyard (half of it covered, so you can still sit out there if it's raining). Good ambience. No loud music, drunks, or loud TVs with sports knuckleheads gathered round. Haven't eaten there, but the food looks pretty good. Standard pub fare but much better than what you would find in a Wetherspoon's pub, for example. Haven't eaten there yet, though, so can't really say.

This is probably the best pub in Bournemouth in terms of the selection of real ales. They have 11 hand-pumps with offerings from lots of independent breweries, both local and farther afield (had Cains Formidable Ale there once). Three or four pumps are reserved for Wadsworth beers. Quality is quite good though you might come across the occasional "dead" ale that should probably come off the line. It's a little off the beaten path, so it's not extremely busy and there may not be as much turn-over as there should be to polish of those casks while they're still nice and fresh. Having said that, I haven't had anything terrible yet. They also offer most of the real ales in bottles to take away. Beyond that, there's the usual couple of taps for lager and cider, plus the standard Euro-lagers, ciders, alcopops, and mixed drinks.

The best 'Real Ale' Pub in Bournemouth by a country mile.

10 Different handpulls, 6 from Wadworths and 4 guests. There may have been some lagers but i didn't notice (wasn't looking).

Used this place twice over a long weekend, pleasant staff, good quality beers and a clean, tidy bar, no matter where you sat. In the main bar area they have large wooden boards on the wall naming each beer on cask, with tasting notes, all in big letters, so the old regulars can read what is on. Remember Bournemouth is a huge retirement settlement, even if it now has a Uni too.

Average price was £3.00 a pint, which we thought, a bit heavy, but it is 'Darn Sarf' and it was just after the Budget of April 2009. Wetherspoons were having an International beer fest with everything at £1.79 a pint at the same time (two outlets in Bournemouth), so we ended up in those later.

Sports screens in the raised part of the pub, nothing in the main area (good). Large smoking area outside for those that must, looked a sun trap too.

Goat Curry was on the menu, handy for any Kenyans visiting I suppose, but we had something different. I had a Chicken and Mushroom Pie, the wife Ham and Eggs, both very good, if a bit pricey.

Well worth finding.
