Notes: In the beginning, there was nothing. Then an impish brewer piled a ludicrous amount of hops into a batch of beer. This zymurgical big bang is Epic Armageddon, an apocalyptic assault on your preconceptions and taste buds. It may be too huge for this fragile planet so enjoy this beer like it was the last one on Earth.

Figured for my 50th review I wanted to review something epic. Little too hot to have the Black Albert I've been saving so I figured to go with a beer that was quite literally "epic".

A - Nice clear amber with a slight one finger head that leaves practicly no side lacing but nice spiderlacing on the liquid itself.

S - An almost bready taste along with heavy citrus (grapefruit) but not all they piney. It must be the hops but theres quite a strong tobacco smell which is rather shocking and unexpected.

M - Crisp and clean this has medium, almost high carbonation.

D - Very nice, different IPA. Pretty sure this is my first time trying these hops. Such a unique flavor, but as the beer warms it loses a bit of the punch. Really glad I tried this New Zealand brew, but for the $9.99 picetag its definately not an every day pickup.

Picked this up at Tullys in Wells Maine. Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass. Pours a attractive yellowish orange, the sticky white head is the highlight of the look. Nice citrusy smell. Wish it was a little less sweet on smell & taste. Solid body, on the fuller side. Very solid IPA, little pricey.

Came across this beer at one of my favorite beer stores. The pour is what you expect from an IPA. It pours a darker golden color with a nice white head. The smell, well the smell reminded me of pakalolo(marijuana)! As I was sharing this beer with a few friends, we all had a smirk on our faces because we were in agreement about the smell:) The taste was a little bitter in the front and then some piney hops followed, and ending in a taste that was simillar to the smell! We enjoyed this beer very much as it was a shot in the dark. I would pick this up again if it wasn't for the price! It is a little steep!

A - clear golden/copper, thumb of white head settled at half a finger with bubbles rising from the bottom
S - citrus and fresh greens, bubble gum, mild florals and grains
T - leafy greens and bubble gum flavours prominent up front, followed by a floral bouquet, light multi grain cracker maltiness, finishes clean
M - light body with pleasant carbonation, crisp and clean with light bitterness and medium dry finish
O - pleasant and refreshing IPA with a nice mellow mix of hop flavours but retains and nice balance, well worth seeking out ... plus the ABV is the number of the beast!

A: Pours clear dark golden color with a 1/2 finger tan head. Looks pretty solid.

S: Some nice citrus and candied citrus notes. Tangerine and candied orange with some pale malt in the background. Faint mango and herbal hops.

T: A bit of a citrus hop bite right away. Grapefruit pith and some orange rind come first. Then a smooth wave of malt that has a touch of caramel. Finish brings a touch of hop resin. Not bad, but not something I'd probably go after again.

This review's from a little while ago, found it and decided to put it up.

Duvel glass. Pour yields an apple juice colour with good head and lacing.

Classic IPA aroma. Honey/rye-y malt, parmesan umami, lychees, grapes, pineapple, more honey. Beautiful tropical fruit nose, like a honeyed fruit salad. Rockmelon. Galaxy? Nelson Sauvin? Maybe Cascade. Know nothing about hops but they're my guesses. Edit: Apparently it's Cascade and Centennial.

Taste is a carry-over of the nose with more pine and a tea-y British-tasting hop presence notable. Bit of bitterness, but not quite as much as there could be.

Mouthfeel is thin, highly carbed and textbook.

Overall a great beer from our Kiwi brothers. In the same league as Blind Pig. But, why is this beer so expensive, almost the same price as grey market Blind Pig? World class beer, and priced accordingly.

Epic Armageddon IPA

Appearance: Clear light amber, very small head, and a little lacing.

Smell: Fruit-berry, hops, and slight yeast.

Taste: Malty, flowery hops and subtle fruit-berry.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light.

Hoppy berry goodness. Balance is great with a pleasant aftertaste.

Lightly hazed, golden colored body lays beneath a thick, porous bone-white head. Retention, lacing, and carbonation trails are light.

Did someone just set up a Christmas tree in here? Hoppy pine, pine, pine, and more pine. Pine-cone, dry grass and tree bark, and light spicing. Perhaps a bit of sawdust - smells dry.

Similar to the aroma - piney. Bitterness is potent and hits you right away and leaves your tongue tingling for the entire sip. Very earthy quality to the hop profile with a bit of oak. A slight sweet spike on the finish gives you a hint of tropical fruit, but is quickly subdued by bitterness while screaming "uncle!"

Done dry. I typically don't mind a dry IPA, but I don't like being more thirsty at the end of a glass than I was before I started - seems counter productive. Body is pretty light and carbonation is spot on. Bite is nearly perfect as well - potent without knocking you off your feet. Adjusting the finish would help this one tremendously.

A solid IPA, but far too dry for my liking. With a few changes, in my opinion this would be a force to be reckoned with.

This beer was delectable. It poured out a nice caramel tangerine color with only a sliver of head and very light carbonation. The smell was a wonderful citrus perfume that was nearly as fresh smelling as the fresh hopped beers I had just been enjoying in oregon. This was a huge surprise since this beer came from so far away. The lack of any spoil or moldiness in the nose was a tribute to the quality and craft of the hops in this beer.
The taste is equally impressive with almost no lingering bitterness and just a slight berry characteristic to the malt that is accompanies the hops perfectly. To be honest, I was enjoying this beer so much that I neglected to even note the ABV and all alcholic harshness was completed masked by the wonderful flavors. If you can find it, TRY THIS BEER.

Pours golden straw - one finger pillowy head, some lacing, a few large bubbles slowly rise.

Aromas of pine, citrus. Strong aromas, good stuff.

Taste is a balanced mixture of hops, citrus, pineapple, lemon, pine and some dryness. ABV of 6.6 holds well, and despite indications of hop-bombness of Epic brews, it's not overpowering. Nicely carbonated.

Good beer, but not worth the $15 price tag, sadly. Overall -1 point for that

Appearance. Pours a very clear gold-amber with a finger+ of thick white head.

Smell. Big juicy tropical fruits and some citrus rinds with a little clean toasty malt.

Taste. Nice citrus rinds and a little pine followed by juicy citrus and tropical fruits (but not very sweet). lightly floral hops and some nice dry toasted malts.

Mouthfeel. Medium body with medium, smooth carbonation.

Overall. A fantastic IPA with some really nice tasting hops and not too sweet ...which I appreciate.

A - The clear amber lurks below a two finger head. A nice lace follows it down the glass.

S - Big hop nostril awakening aroma of pineapple, mango, grapefruit. Lovely.

T - Wow! Super hoppy but nothing harsh about it. Apparently has a 60 IBU rating (same as SN Torpedo) but has more smack to it if you ask me. The same tropical fruits abound, with apricot, pine and a slight nuttiness in the malt.

M - A moderate body with just the right carbonation levels. Slightly oily.

O - A super sharp turbo-hopped IPA. Possibly fresher than the American counterparts that Ive tried thus far but my favourite of the big and bold IPAs to this point.

330ml bottle poured into a teku glass.

Hazy orange amber color, it tops with massive silky white head that stands with great retention before slowly subsiding to an everlasting frothy crown covering atop and leaving lots of lacing patch and spot here and there, high visible carbonation.

The aroma is bursting with solid hoppy goodness with wide varieties of note ranging from citrus, grapefruit, lime, lemon rind, melon, herbal, floral, spice, pine, resin, grassy, and earthy. Malt is also there in the undertone with its biscuit and sweet caramel.

The taste is rich and intense with the hoppy affair of strong piney resin, spice, herbal, earthy, grassy, as well as fruitiness ranging from citrus, grapefruit, lime, lemon rind, and melon together with persistent bitterness. Malt lays as a base of the flavor structure with notes of sweet, biscuit, and caramel. The aftertaste is long-lasting with grassy and resiny hop bitterness.

Medium to rather full body with some bold touch and some good crisp yet moderate lively carbonation through the palate, the mouthfeel is smooth with a refreshing touch and dry finish.

6.66% ABV, it is the number of evil making this IPA so intense with hop and deceivingly tasty like an evil.

After being slightly jilted by their Hop Zombie, which purported to be the hop monster it was not, I was hesitant to “make it rain” and lash out another $17 on a bottle of Epic Armageddon IPA. But then that little voice in my head said “Get it Doc, they must have a brewed something big enough to quench your massive hop thirst” and with that I queued the sound of money flushing down a toilet and bought another Epic beer.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a nonic pint.

A: Presents a hazy amber body with a nice dense-packed 1cm white head. Looks like a very tasty American Pale Ale, a tad lighter than a standard IPA though. 7/10.

S: Damn! Once again Epic have brought a brilliant hop bouquet to the table with a trifecta of pine resin/tropical fruit/floral hop notes blasted over a light toffee base. The tropical fruit represented by this brew are the papaya (with guava) characters that I noted in Hop Zombie, continuation of a great theme IMO. A superlative aroma, easily ten out of ten! 10/10.

T: Again the hop promise is great but the delivery leaves me wanting... too much concentration on aromatic rather than flavour hops perhaps? Regardless there is an obvious imbalance between setup and payoff with mild pine/citric hop flavours and an even-handed toffee malt base. The finish is a medium citric bitterness (your usual American IPA has a much higher bitterness) and there is a slightly citric bitter after taste. Considering the hop aromas noted this IPA falls well short of where it should be but is still an alright brew. 7/10.

M: Medium bodied with a dense but fizzy carbonation. 6/10.

D: Epic need to sort out their hop bill, or their process for hopping their beers if they want to play with the big boys in the US (aka Deschutes, Sierra Nevada, Founder’s, Brooklyn, etc...) as there is a definite disparity between the aroma and flavour of their hops. Disappointing in a way because I want the antipodean brewers to show the world just how great we can be at everything we try our hand at, and we’ve done that with wine (and now whiskey) - let’s do it with beer too! Oh yeah, you need to bring the price of your brews down in Australia Epic [like they even read my blog]. 7/10.

Food match: Thai/Vietnamese is a classic match for a hoppy IPA, this one isn’t overly hoppy but will still match well with those cuisines... had Korean for dinner tonight and that would have matched this to a T.

Nothing like a beer that costs $10.99 to celebrate #ipaday. Pours a beautiful honeyed rose colored amber with a two fingers of fluffy head and excellent clarity. The nose brings honeyed malt, sweet citrus, tropical fruit with kiwi (might be tricking myself), standing out along with lemongrass. The taste brings tropical fruit custard (wonder if sorachi ace is a hop very similar to the single mikkeller i just had recently), again slightly sweet honeyed malt, bright lemon along with light pine forest and finishes with a very pleasant hoppy bite. An excellent ipa that i would love to try knowing how fresh it was, though doubtful i would ever pay such a steep price for it again.
