Appearance: Starts out as a gusher but by the time the beer hits the glass the foaming action proves short-lived and the mahogany liquid winds up being capped by a rocky head that fades to a ringlet; loads of spotty lacing lingers on the side of the glass, however

Smell: An interesting fruit medley of plum, strawberry and dried fruit with a treacly tone underneath

Taste: Fruity, with the plum and strawberry tones predominate and dried fruit (apple, pear, dates and banana) underneath; in the middle, the treacle and spices grow, bringing cinnamon and nutmeg; a touch of wheat bread in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with low carbonation

Overall: An interesting but ultimately flawed beer (perhaps due to the way it was handled as I bought it 18 months after it was bottled); I particularly liked the flavor profile but the mouthfeel left something to be desired

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #59 (December 2011):

LOOK: Murky brown, tiny bubbles

SMELL: Ripe figs, blood oranges, bitter coriander, soft allspice

TASTE: Milk chocolate, dark fruit, touch of caramel, chicory, very faint coriander, fermented honey, mild warming booziness, mildly cloying

Unfiltered, bottle conditioned and very well balanced—makes for a highly complex and interesting beer, one that sparks conversation and awakens the palate without destroying it. However, the sweetness does get a bit cloying after a while. Worth a try. Share with friends.

P: Dark amber, clear (careful), not much beige head but decent lacing.
A: Orange, caramel, raisin,
T: Caramel, rich malt, raisin, prune, delicate sweetness, mildly spicey with a hint of chocolate.
M: Full body, champagne like carbonation, tart and delicately bitter.
O: My second Bruton. Pretty darned impressed. I've read recently that Italy has been a leader in craft brewing. No doubt.

330ml capped and wrapped, squat bottle. This brewery's label definitions of their beer don't always jive with what's proclaimed on this site, as with this one they apparently consider it an 'English Ale'.

This beer pours a hazy, dark orange-amber hue, with two fingers of initially bubbly, but eventually dense, foamy beige head, which leaves some undulating rocky mountain vista lace around the glass as it slowly seeps away.

It smells of grainy, biscuity dark malt, musky black fruit, wafting ashes, muddled savoury spices, and dusty earthy hops. Yep, this is the beer equivalent of a smoky country road. The taste is much fruitier, with the malt taking on a stronger sugary black plum and prune essence, with the underlying biscuit and breadiness providing a decent supporting cast, the spices now more readily evident as being yeast-borne, and the musty dustiness now glomming onto the earthy, leafy hops.

The carbonation is quite laid back, a tad frothy, and generally supportive, the body an adequate medium weight, and quite unassailed in its smoothness. It finishes off-dry, the biscuity, fruity malt still rather prominent, with a waning of the hop and dust notes.

An interesting BSDA, as I can see many indications that might lead one to define this as such - big black fruit, well-integrated elevated ABV, and a permissible mustiness. However, the hard to ignore grainy, biscuity character takes us full circle back to the brewer's own interpretation. At any rate, this is actually pretty good - drinkable, complex, and uh, did I already say interesting?

This has been around a while at Bar Volo, and enjoyed it courtesy of Justin, thanks! Tasted and looked somewhat aged, which is surprising. Aroma of orange yeast. There is wheat, apricot, pineapple, grapes, candi sugar. Complex, honeyish, with a constrained sour aftertaste. Same lace drops. We hope a purposeful infection in that sourness - it is interesting.

Bottle: Poured a deep brown color ale with a huge brown foamy head with good retention and good lacing. Aroma of sweet malt with light residual candi sugar notes. Taste is also a well balanced mix between some sweet Belgian malt with notes of candi sugar and light fruity ester. Body is a bit thin for style with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. OK but definitely not the best offering from this brewery and body is too thin for style.

This beer pours a light brown color with a modest white head. Quite and aroma...lots of fruit, most notably cherries and plums. There's also a lot of roasted malt, caramel, and candy in the aroma. Not much in the way of hops in the smell or in the taste. The flavor, though, does have an intense sweetness, with a caramelized malt character. The beer is apparently made with honey, although the taste doesn't carry much honey flavor, just a rich sweetness. Smooth mouthfeel with very little carbonation and a lot of heft. At times the beer can be a bit cloying, but the alcohol generally provides a little balance. This is a reasonably good brew - worth a try.

Really cool looking 750 ml bottle. Thanks to Doug for sharing!

Pours a hazy dark orange, almost brown, medium sized off white head forms, drops to a solid layer, leaves a nice ring of lace on the glass, looks pretty good. Smell is neat, very fruity, candi sugar sweetness, beets, caramel, rhubarb, lots of fruit, strawberries, pretty great, the rhubarb aroma is really neat. Taste is similar, sweet and fruity at first, strawberries, sour rhubarb, honey sweetness, quite sweet but it works, very fruity, alcohol is well hidden. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with low to medium carbonation, very drinkable. Pretty unique beer, I quite liked it. Thanks Doug!

Bottle pour for the 4th Annual LA Beer Week Beer Festival at Union Station in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a murky dark orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, dark fruit, and spices. Taste is much the same with a slight caramel flavor as well. There is a mild spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and flavorful.

brentk56's description for this beer is spot on.

It is a good beer, just a tad sweet to my taste. I would not say that this is a beer that I will go out of my way to grab again... however, i am not pissed at having tried it either :)

3.5 - 3.75 is just for this beer.... but in the type, there are SO many choices to try that you will forget this beer eventually.

Second Bruton Ive had and once again Im truly impressed.

A - Poured into a La Trappe goblet. Deep copper color in the middle and fades to a pleasant orange towards the edges. No too much head but good lacing.

S - Orangey corriander going on here with a a sort of hop at the end that comes into play and overwhelmes the orangeyness.

T - Not as much corriander as I would have liked for a beer specifically brewed with it. Though this is acutally quite a pleasant beer. Really good. Good overall balance, though it seems to be a little under carbonated which Im sure was on purpose.

M - Silky and smooth. Good weight to it.

O - This isnt my definition of a Belgian Strong Dark. Its to light for that in color and in weight. But its a very good beer. Good orangey corriander sort of taste to it. Well balanced and a great brew overall.

I was a bit worried on this one, "best by" date was around July 2016, but as a Dark Ale / "Scotch Ale", it was still good. L: Brown color. S: Malty, grains, bready. T: Definitely tasted better than the "malt bomb" aroma. F: Medium body. O: A decent scotch ale, well balanced, finish was pleasant, and not overpowering.
