Notes: Hop aroma and flavor dominate this IPA. However, the malt character of this deep amber colored ale nicely balances the hop component thus avoiding a harsh bitterness. Pure hoppiness!

A: Clean toffee colored body and an active head

S: Indistinct pine, watery pineapple, light caramel and a sudsy character

T: Pine, unripe citrus, bready malt, and a meandering metallic taste. Slight alcoholic nip for this 6.5% beer.

M: Plenty of residual bitterness and the malt lends a solidifying character to the body. Appropriate carbonation.

D: This is obviously an IPA but the indistinct hop profile doesn't establish a strong character. I'd take this over BMC any day but would rather have a more harmonious balance.

Can I brought to share at Wowcoolman's tasting.

Thanks to Norseman for sending me this one.

Pours a hazy honey orange with a foamy beige head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and candied citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest and metallic flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a low level of carbonation with an almost flat mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer with an odd metallic flavor and a low level of carbonation that don't do anything towards this one's drinkability.

Serving type: can.

Review from notes.

A: Pours a clear amber with a foamy, tan head, probably 1/2 finger in height. Moderate retention and nice lacing.

S: Light citrus with some orange and grapefruit, a little bit of grass, and some caramel malt.

T: Very similar to the aroma. Tasted quite fresh moderately hoppy, probably middle of the road bitterness with mostly citrus and a hint of pine and some grass. The hops dominate, but there is a slight bit of caramel near the end.

M: Slightly lighter than medium bodied with medium carbonation. Smooth and a little crisp.

O: A pretty good IPA, slightly better than middle of the road probably. Goes down easy, could drink a bunch of it if I had more.

Took the family to Rapid City for a little vacation so figured I'd see what was available locally that I couldn't get in MN. Picked up a six pack of this and their Porter as well. It's an ok IPA, not great to me but certainly drinkable.
If I lived in SD would probably buy again.

12oz can with no date. 6.5 ABV. Poured into DFH signature glass.

A: Pours a clear reddish orange color. Finger of off white head. Great carbonation streaming off the bottom of glass. Head dissapates quickly. Some mild lacing bits on glass.

S: I get some sweet fruity hops and some pine hints. Maybe some mango or peach. There is some bready malt behind it too.

T: Taste doesn't necessarily match the smell. You get some fruity hop presence, but it doesn't punch you in the face as you would assume. Very subdued and on the back end. Really don't get much on the tip of the tongue. All the flavors kind of force themselves on you in the mid mouth. You get the fruity hops and the sweet malt bill etc there. Then the close is crisp and dry, but not mouth puckering.

M: Medium bodied

O: This on gets a B from me. It's not a bad beer, especially out of a can. Not bad.

Reviewed from notes: Thanks goes out to Chris for sending this my way.

Appearance: copper orange with a 2 finger off white head.

smell: grass, hops, malts, caramel,

taste: hops, caramel malts,

mouthfeel: mild carbonation, medium body,

overall: nice drinkable IPA. I'm a hophead at heart and I will have to say this is a pretty decent one. Just not top tier.

State tick #47
12oz can poured into a pint glass, no canning date

A- pours a clear bright golden color with a two-finger foamy white head that retains nicely, leaving some sticky lace behind

S- vegetal aroma up front, almost like spinach, beyond that theres some faint piney and floral hop, sweet bready malt

T- fairly bland up front, followed by a hit of piney hop & some earthy notes, green vegetal flavors follow, before finishing i bit metallic

M- medium body with low carbonation leads to a slightly foamy mouthfeel and a dry crisp finish

O- some oddities throughout the flavor profile, but still pretty drinkable regardless

Served in a pint glass

Thanks to TheManiacalOne for actually letting me have a South Dakota beer...I'm so happy right now.

This beer pours an orange color with seemingly lots of fix like a cola might have...only this is orange. The aroma is rather faint for an IPA it's got some aroma of hops in an orange syrup mixed with grapefruit along with the aroma of caramel. The taste is malty upfront. Then the hop character is expressed in a dry chalky nature it has the wrong kind of bitterness where it is more astringent than bitter. I'm not really sure what's on my tongue right now, but I want it to go away. The actual flavors that are available aren't too bad, but the way they sit on the tongue hurts something fierce. It's drinkable, but not recommended. Not one of the better IPAs I've had...but keep on plugging SD!

Got this as an extra in a trade from a77cj7! Very generous!!!

A- Poured a deep ruby redish/orange! The off-white head disappears very quickly. Not much in the way of lacing.

S- Subtle citrus and hops. Alot more sweet malt and caramel than most IPA's. Kinda like a caramel apple. No trace of piney hops. My guess is that this is an older can(00802A1BA).

T- Very malt and caramel forward. I taste no hops, just a hint of citrus lingers in the finish. Totally dominated by malts. My guess is that this isn't that fresh. Not bad... just not as advertised on the website.

M- Lots of caramel on the tongue. Just a touch of citrus and hops. Nothing really special.

D- I'd say more of an Ale than an IPA. Tastes fine, drinks fine, just not what I was expecting.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip glass.

A - Pours a translucent copper w/ a slightly off white two finger head. Doesn't look to be overly carbonated.

S - Fruit, juicy hops along a bit of malt backbone. Seems to be fairly hop forward, but I'm going to let it warm a bit to issue a final verdict. A bit of pineiness.

T - Bitter hops up front - piney and a bit of resin in there. As it slides back, I get a touch of citrus, but the pine is what seems to dominate on the hop side of things. There is a nice malt profile - not overly sweet. More straight up bread than caramel or toffee like in some IPAs.

M - medium bodied, moderate carbonation.

O - Not too bad. A nicely balanced IPA offering from a brewery that I really have been starting to like. Plus one for cans.

Nice gold body; billowy white head that quickly falls to a thin yet lasting layer of foam. Funky, grassy aroma; musty citrus; hint of caramel. Balanced blend of cereal and bread malt flavors with a zesty hop bitterness; twinge of orange and tangerine flavor. Medium body; mostly dry finish.

A respectable IPA if rather indistinguishable from the crowd.

Received this as an extra from a77cj7 thanks Chris

Pours a dark red with half inch of foam that disappears quickly leaving little lacing.

Smell is such that the citrus and hops negate each other.

Tastes of lots of malts and little hops. I could be wrong because I have been IPAing it for awhile now but hop character feel subdued.

Mouthfeel is smooth... Too smooth... Still has a little bitterness but not enough.

This has decent drinkability but does not push the edge like is needed today. This is however the best beer in SD and should be allowed to develop throughout criticism.

Just began distributing throughout North and South Dakota.
Opened it up and poured it into a pint glass. A light clear amber color with about a two finger head. The aroma is filled with im guessing citra hops? maybe not though. Taste is very hop forward finished off with a great malty backbone. Definately a good go to local IPA.

Great to see a descent brew come out of the dakotas!

L - pretty light Amber, clean
S - malty, not much hops
T - another one you need to drink warm or won't have any taste
F - kinda gritty, little carb
O - pretty weak, but at least tastes like an IPA
