getting a few maacro lagers out of the way tonight. started with an mgd, now this one, and next, the ever present bud.

much more lively carbonation than mgd and slightly less faded golden. maintains a good covering of white foam.

fuller, sharper aroma than the miller. i wouldnt say better. its not like its malty or hoppy really. im guessing its part of the reason so many people get put off beer.

definitely some bitterness going on here. hits you right at the start, and doesnt leave room for much else. tends to a sourness as it warms, must be why i try to drink it so quick.

seems to be a lot here, it just doesnt work well together. too harsh overall.

From Bottle. This brew is only available in tassie. It is a standard Aussie-style lager with a golden body and faint malt aromas. Flavour of sweet grainy malts, Not much bitterness in the finish. Medium-light body. Must try when visiting Tasmania.

If ones expectations are not high this is a reasonable adjunct lager.
Its point of differentiation was a slight wooden barrel flavour in the mid palate .It added a hint of earthiness that was not terribly exciting just different .
Colour was as expected and the bubbles were adequate to liven the mouth up a little.

Boags or Cascade? The eternal question for Taswegians, so I compared Boags Draught with Cascade Draught during a moment of poor beer options on holiday in Tasmania.

On appearance alone, the two look absolutely identical, light yellow hue with a slight head. I can hardly smell anything with the Boags. There is a little more (hops) with the Cascade but still minimal. As others have said there is the usual Aussie macro beer taste with both of them, although Boags has a heavily carbonated mouthfeel which Cascade seems to manage better. Cascade seem to have good control of carbonation in most of their beers. There's very little in the way of the finish with Boags, but a Cascade has a nice if unexciting lingering bitter finish. Overall, Cascade clinches it with the better mouthfeel and finish.

Appearance: Pale golden colour with some very slow rising bubbles. Not head retention and to lacing.

Smell: Not much there, maybe some citrus hops and caramel malt which was all very dull.

Taste/ Mouthfeel: Some immediate hops bitterness and again those slightly caramel, bready malts (after retro-olfaction I could swear I just took a bite out of a peice of wholegrain bread). Bit sharp and metallic. Crisp and refreshing mouthfeel. Aftertaste is a bit malty and only some lingering hops remain. This brew reminds me a bit of VB as it is quite malty.

Drinkability/Overall: Not a bad drop. I had this on tap at cascade brewery in Hobart and it was so much better its scary. This is a beer to be enjoyed on tap not in a bottle or can I feel. Out of the bottle it reminds me of a more watery VB with a more prominent hop character.
