500ml bottle bought from Sainsburys...

Poured a crystal clear rich copper amber colour. Light mocha head poured pretty tight thick and foamy then faded quite quickly to wispy covering with thicker edging... barely any carbonation... some light lines of fine lacing...

Aroma - Strong rich toasted nuttiness mxied with sweet caramel malts, overripe fruits (banana, apples, figs), quite strong booze (some rum traces), some treacle, anise, some dried fruits (raisins and currents), marzipan / almond hints, butterscotch, oaky traces, toasted bread...

Taste - Quite a lot of alcohol soaked fruits (banana, raisins, currents, apples) - tastes a lot stronger than 6.2%... hints of rum and brandy coming through, rye bread, toasted nuts, toffee and caramel sweetness, some graininess, grassy and peppery hop bitterness...

M&D - Smooth initially then a little sharpness comes through... mediumd / full bodied... a bit too boozy tasting to be very drinkable...

Overall - A decent enough ale if a little rough around the edges... could be a decent brew though if it was smoothed out a little... worth a try...

500 ml bottle, as Duchy Originals Organic Select Ale, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Also available in Norway at Vinmonopolet. ABV is 6.2%. Clear and deep amber colour, moderate off-white head. Fairly strong and sweetish aroma with vinous and fruity notes (dates, figs), also notes of malts, pastry and caramel. The mouthfeel is fairly rich and full. The flavour is malty but not very sweet, earthy notes, some toffee and caramel, with fruity hops in the finish, leaving a decent bitterness in the aftertaste. Not bad at all.

Pours clear ruby with large off-white head with good retention. Aroma is faint malty and slightly toasty malt with notes of alcohol.

Taste is quite complex dark fruit with alcohol, toasted malt, caramel and spicy bitterness, slowly drying finish. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, moderate carbonation.

Overall, an enjoyable Strong Ale. Still, I feel there was something lacking in the taste, the flavours were not combined too well together.

Appearance: deep ruby-brown, great clarity, two fingers of light tan foam with a creamy top, good head retention

Aroma: biscuity malt, caramel, woodsy hops, hint of marmalade and leather

Flavor: medium sweetness with hints of banana, unripe pears, raisins, toffee, and a rye spiciness; herbally hop flavor; finishes semi-dry with a mild bitterness

Mouthfeel: medium body, pert carbonation, soft texture

Other comments: This is not only one of the better Duchy Originals beers, but also one of the better Wychwood beers. Deee-lish!

Brown 500ml bottle, best before 7th Oct 08, drank 6th Aug 08.

Poured (twice) into my new La Chouffe tulip glass.

Good clear ruby redish brown (teak wood colour) body with a tan head that fell away from being big to being little.

As I opened the bottle my nose picked up a mature Cheddar Cheese aroma. Thankfully that was replaced by a rich, peaty, hoppy, yeasty, beery, ale type smell. Plums, raisins and dried mixed fruits came to mind as I supped my way through this lovely beer.

A UK beer with 6.2% is a bit high, but the alcohol doesn't kill any flavours here. This is a well crafted beer and very drinkable. Most likely the best beer I've had from this brewery and a beer I would gladly offer to an American BA as a fine example of what we Brits can do, if we put our minds to it!

500ml bottle best before 31 Dec 10, poured into a pint glass. Pours an amber-ruby color. Clear and only slightly carbonated with a thin white head that disperses rather quickly.

Smell is a delicious blend of esters that produce hints of apples, pears and pineapples and dried fruits such as figs and raisons. There is also a sweet sent similar to a freshly baked pastry and brown sugar.

Taste features bitterness up front with a slight citrus hint that transitions to dried fruit such as figs and raisons and then moves to a caramel/toffee sweetness at the finish. There is a slightly boozy finish due to hints of alcohol/solvent.

Mouthfeel features minimal carbonation, thus a very smooth texture with a nice blend of sweet and fruit flavors. Drinkability is fantastic. Very complex and delicious flavor profiles that kept me very intrigued trying to identify everything. After reviewing this one, drank the remainder with an extra mature english cheddar. Nice pairing. Didn't expect too much going in, but left very impressed.
