Dark color, not much head.

No noticeable smell.

Taste was very bland. There was a very slight headache not of the spice/chili

Overall, good beer but really not special.

Pours a dark cola brown and settles as black in the glass, with a very nice, creamy tan head. The nose has a nice cocoa note, a bit of roasty char, and a slightly vegetal note that I’m guessing is the hot chilies.

The cocoa and roasty char flavors are forward and quite vibrant on the taste, but it’s the chilies that make this beer for me - nothing vegetal at all in the taste, but a very nice chili flavor that has a little heat.

The mouthfeel is a little lighter than is typically seen with an imperial stout, but this is still a very flavorful beer, and very easy drinking. Glad I tried it.

L: Poured from a 12oz bottle fridge temperature into a sniffer - Dark thick oily liquid pouring into the sniffer. Huge amounts of dark foam risen, 2-3 fingers length to be exact. A bit of lacing as it dissolves back into liquid form.
S: Definitely getting chocolate here, a bit of oats, coffee, dark malts, some molasses. Also getting some dark fruit in the mix as well.
T: This is interesting. Not getting much of the hot chili - getting some light chocolate, coffee, malts with some dark fruits in there too. As I finish the sip I can feel a warm, spicy sensation in the back of my throat which might be the chili pepper indicator. Very well done!!
F: Silky smooth. Extremely easy to drink, not to boozy, not to carbonated.
O: I didn't know what to expect when I bought this but mannnn this is actually a really good stout. Very underated in my opinion and if this was made in the US I have a feeling this could be pushing almost a world class status for the uniqueness of the beer. This reminds me of the Prarie Artisan ales 'Bomb' in a lighter way. Prarie is 13% brewed with chili peppers but while this one is a 8% beer. Very, very good job to Birrificio Del Ducato. I just hope to find this more often as I would make it my go to beer.

April 2014: Shared bottle at local tasting. Black colour, tan head. Roasty aroma, notes of coffee and dark chocolate, hints of chili. Medium sweet and roasty flavour, notes of coffee, dark chocolate and chili, which leaves a distinct chili burn on the palate and throat in the aftertaste.

11.2oz undated bottle poured into a teku glass at fridge temp 8.2% ABV. The beer pours dense, dark brown with no light penetration and light brown head. The head recedes to a thin ring and partial layer of bubbles. The aroma is mild with caramel, roasted malt, dark chocolate, pepper and coffee. The taste is bittersweet roasted malt with minimal hot pepper along with dark chocolate. Mild bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with just less that average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, good.

Very, very, very interesting beer.

It smells like a quad and I thought for sure this was some Italian labeling trickery and they called quads stouts.

No its definitely a stout, but definitely fermented with some type of belgian-esque yeast. The dry bitter bakers cocoa is phenomenal. Im not sure what malt is imparting this flavor but its so seldom tasted in American beers but I love it when I do.

I'm not really getting the hot chili. The power of suggestion is strong though and I think I might be getting a little heat or burn on the back of my throat in the finish.

The feel is obscenely dry. Perplexing how it leaves the mouth feeling after each sip.

Overall, its so bizarre how radical this tastes in comparison to the any given 500 random US beers. Is this a normal beer in Italy? Italian beers simply do not exist in pa or Ohio so stumbling on this was a definite buy. Its so bizarre that a country so not represented in the US beer scene is represented by this obscure beer.

Birrificio Del Ducato "Verdi"
€6 / 30 cl glass alla spina @ Birreria Rione, Firenze, IT on 26 November 2019

Look: Dark mahogany brown body that appears black in the glass beneath a short head of light tan. Average head retention and lacing.
Smell: Dark cocoa and dark chocolate with a hint of anise.
Taste: Slightly nutty, caramelish, chocolatey with a soft roastiness and firm spiciness from chili peppers. There's also some light fruitines (berries), and some grassy and leafy hops in the background. A stiff bitterness backs it and it finishes spicy and lingering with notes of licorice, ashen roastiness, and a swirl of dusty cocoa powder.
Feel: Medium bodied with a fine-bubbled, seemingly natural, standard level carbonation.
Overall: Quite a nice stout with a really nicely balanced bit of chili pepper heat.

Purchased this bottle at Appalachian Vintners in Asheville earlier this month.

Pours a semi-translucent dark brown with decent initial head and good lacing. Tart dark berries smell and taste. Flavors of molasses and anise come through as it warms. Hints of dark chocolate and dark red wine.

I love sour stouts and I very much enjoyed this one.

11.2 ounce bottle, no dating that I noticed on the bottle or label. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about a half inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both decent enough. The brew smells like dark fruit, burnt/charred malt, coffee and some licorice. Taste is similar to the aroma, with dark fruit, coffee, licorice, molasses, cocoa and a little bit of chili flavor. Label says this was brewed with hot chili but the chili flavor in this is minimal. There isn't much if any chili heat either. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit coating with a low/moderate amount of carbonation. Gets worse tasting as it warms, but it's still drinkable. For whatever reason this one missed the mark with me, maybe I just didn't get a good bottle. $6.99 a bottle.

From the unique little bottle in a snifter. This interesting take on
a Russian Imperial pours a murky blackish brown with a modest head of
off white khaki foam that subsides to a thick ring, small subtle clumping
layer, and shows scant lacing. Nose of smoke and char with subtle
coffee and cocoa notes. Flavors lightly exceed the nose with bakers
cocoa and smoke with mild coffee and subtle warming chili notes with
some light anise and dark bruised fruit. Mouth feel is a touch thin, light
carbonation, leaning towards the English side of the pond, and subtly
dry.

Overall a unique brew, but not one I would seek out again.

Cheers

Bought at Savor Growl in Columbus.
