Notes: Collaboration with Surly Brewing Company

For quite some time the Amager crew has been discussing this question: which person is the most rock’n’roll in the whole craft beer world - is it Barnaby Struve of Three Floyds or is it Todd Haug of Surly Brewing? In the end it wasn’t really all that difficult to decide since only Todd has played for Laura Dern in a David Lynch movie (yeah, Nicolas Cage was in that same movie, but since when did he count?) AND Todd plays the guitar in both a speed metal band and a stoner band. Add to that that Todd and his wife Linda are some of the nicest people to hang out with.

So Todd, here’s to you: "Todd - The Axe Man" - a potent IPA loaded with fresh American aroma hops on a base of rich Golden Promise malt, Surly’s signature malt. Raise a glass to Todd, world class brewer - and master of the axe! Bonus facts about Todd: yes, he DID actually have a perm in his younger days (his wife confirms) and he does indeed love cats an awful lot.

Oh, the collaborations between acclaimed brewers and the stories that they can tell. The guys from Surly Brewing and Amager sure have a lot of fun, and with Todd the Axe Man, they work hard to put that fun right in your mouth. least, if you're a hop-head.

The collaborative ale pours creamy, lush, hazy and lightly of lemony orange. And those aesthetics are a precursor to the senses as the bright and tangy fragrance wafts over the nose with a host of tropical, citrus and berry-like wonderment. And as its fruity-sweet taste washes the early palate, notions of fruit juice cornucopia begin to seduce the senses.

As the malt sweetness impedes the tastebuds they leave impressions of grapefruit juice, orange juice and hawaiian punch behind. Slowly and methodically trending dry and playfully acidic, the dominance of hops take control with red grapefruit, tangerine, nectarine, lemon, passionfruit, pineapple and gooseberry. Once the maltiness trails to a slender shell, the bitterness of citrus pith, fruit rind and soft pine resins frame the beer's final chord.

Its medium body is malty-dry with an arid malt skeleton standing in support of hop overtones but without rivaling their brilliant and bitter display. With a herbal, grassy and sprucy finish, the ale lingers with a simmering bitterness in the throat and mild teeth-churning fruit-like acidity.

Siked to try this one, glad Amager got this collaboration on. Though, certainly not retired, this is a pretty fresh bottle.

A - 500ml to a pint glass is a palish orange color with a bit of haze, soapy white head of a couple fingers. A thin ring and slight swirly cap somewhat quickly, leaving some lace strands.

S - Fresh-squeezed grapefruit leads the way, plenty of grassy weed hop, orange, pineapple, pine, lemon juice. A little Pine-Sol-y. But in a good way.

T - A pretty superb punch of sharp citrus plethora and potent danky pine hops with just a bit of toasty bread for backing, and maybe a touch of caramel. This is definitely a big bitter flavorful hop party.

M - Solid body, big and somewhat bruising bitterness, highish carbonation, it definitely takes a toll over the course of a half-liter. It's bracing and feels alive and well.

O - I'm curious as to whether this collab. version differs from the original Surly version at all - this is definitely reminiscent of Surly's hoppy offerings to me, and was pretty top notch. Really enjoyed the unabashed-but-well-blanced bitterness, brought tons of flavor as well.

Pours a golden orange color with a thick white head. Very little noticeable hop aroma for an IPA. Taste is fantastic. A heavy bodied beer with dank hops flavors and an extremely smooth finish. Loved this beer.

Little hazy with bright white head.
Lots of tropical fruit in the aroma, pineapple, mango, little citrus.
Taste is filled with tropical fruits, got some malt sweetness and a little pine.

I was excited to find this on draft in Copenhagen. Not quite the same as the cans I have had from Surly brewing (where it is still being produced) .

A big fruity hop rush on first sip. The initial sweetness gives way to a delightful piney finish.

Pours a hazy, deep orange coloration with a small, frothy head. Smells of biscuity malt and grassy, resinous hops, with tropical and lighter citrus notes of mango, pineapple and grapefruit. Taste is a great balance of biscuity malt and bitter and resinous, yet somewhat sweet and juicy tropical and lighter citrus hops, being dominated by notes of mango, pineapple and pine, with lighter grapefruit, tangerine and a certain grassiness also coming through. Finishes with a medium/strong bitterness and some pineapple, grapefruit and pine lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This is a rather nice IPA that with a strong WC character, but also a certain NE influence, perhaps not unlike Heady Topper. It's quite bitter and resinous, but also lacks a strong caramel malt backbone and has got a rather hazy look and juicy tropical fruit notes to it, while the mouthfeel is somewhere inbetween a WC and NE IPA. Yet this doesn't feel neither here nor there at all and manages a rather enjoyable balance between the two styles. Pretty awesome brew, actually.

Amager Bryghus "Todd The Axe Man"
on tap @ Kaelderkold, Barcelona, ES on 30 November 2015
,5 l for 4 €

I see this is listed as "retired"... apparently it's come out of retirement as I've seen it elsewhere, and I'm quite sure Surly isn't shipping to Europe (I could be wrong on that, but it's always listed as an Amager beer first and foremost).

Notes: Very hazy deep amber with orange-yellow highlights beneath a creamy head of white. Excellent head retention and lacing! The aroma is not as bold as might be expected given the name, but it's hoppy with resin, pine, and tropical/citrusy notes with dominant pineapple. That follows into the flavor, and it's solid but not overdone... balanced by caramel malt. Also somewhat grassy. Solidly bitter. Dry finish. It's actually quite nice in that it's balanced and rounded, lending it drinkability. It's a touch strong but I'm pretty sure you could handle at least two of these in a row! Worth trying to be sure.

Bottle: Poured a bright hazy orangey color ale with a nice foamy head with good retention and some good amount of lacing. Aroma of citrus and peach/tropical fruit notes is quiet sublime. Taste is also dominated by citrus and peach and tropical fruits notes with limited bitterness and nice floral undertones. Some residual sugar can be detected but is well balanced. Body is about average for style with good carbonation. Very enjoyable IPA that I wouldn’t mind having again.

Great IPA. Was excited to try this collab with Surly. Awesome citrus explosion in the aroma and flavor. Tons of orange, tangerine, and grapefruit along with tropical fruit. Plenty of hop bitterness and damn drinkable. If you see it, drink it!

Poured from a 16.9oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep gold color with a large foamy off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains earthy hops, fruity citrus and caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out with strong sweet flavors of tangerine and grapefruit up front. Then a hearty malt character comes in. The hops presence is strong and earthy but not over-powering and provides a very good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly hoppy.

M: Smooth and crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is clean.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, this is a solid IPA to drink for a while.

On tap. Poured a clear, golden-amber color with a small, off-white head of foam. It smelled of grapefruit, mango and other citrus fruits with a touch of caramel aromas. Great tropical fruit flavors add a punch of bitterness. It had toasted caramel and toffee to balance it out.

I purchased this at Oliver's in Albany NY, enjoyed chilled from a goblet.
shared with Alex
The color is golden amber color with light haze and thick white head with fine bead spots of lace stick.
The smell is mostly citrus with a sort of sweet mandarin orange/clementine smell with light sweetness of malt and yeast ester to enhance the honeyed orange odor. The feel is great with light bitterness up front with a strong mix of citrus and tropical fruit tangy yet slightly sweet from malt with gentle caramel and light yeast texture.

The taste has a good hop flavor with fresh citrus with a juicy quality but moderately bitter with some slight citrus type acidity medium carbonation and bitterness increases to medium high mid palate with a mild sweetness of malt backing although it finishes semi-dry. The flavor reminds me of tangerine with subtle mango-like tropical flavor with a hint of spice and light alcohol with subtle malt but light chalky taste as it finishes on the dry side. Overall this is a great IPA, highly drinkable I recommend having it fresh since I am unsure how it may age coming from Denmark -a little sweet as it warms but wonderful citrus/tangerine quality
